His argument will be the use of the word" berths" and not cabins. When will Northlink realise that a lot of people will not travel unless they can be in a cabin. I for one would not wish to sleep on a recliner, particularly on a rough night, amongst strangers no matter how plush they are meant to be. Time Mr Garret accepted the boats are not adequate, particularly during the summer month. How often have we heard that folk cannot book a cabin. Do these so called "professional" people live in a different world or are they that used to spouting gobbilty gook that they really have little idea what's going on under their noses. How long do they think they can get away with taking us for idiots?

Well we will just have to agree to disagree, but I can mind walking over the street on a Saturday without constantly having to squeeze against shops to let vehicles pass.
-
Canna agree with de urabug, I think the main issue is the amount of cars, I cannot recal it ever being as bad as it is just now. We used to walk up and down the street in a Saturday without the problem of dogging cars. Deliveries could be made at a set time and at all other times the street could be pedestrianised. Last time I was on the street I was nearly hit by two different cars trying to move around the cross and the quantity of vehicles going over the street are destroying the paving. It certainly puts me off. That aside, the place needs a major facelift.

Couldn't agree with you more Suuusssiiieee. I was at the market cross last week when it was teeming with visitors of a liner. I looked at the chemist sign and thought what a blooming disgrace this place is. Not only is the place a disgrace but you have to play dogems with all the cars, both parked and squeezing past you. Why any tourist would find the street of any interest amazes me. Those in charge of Living Lerwick need to take a walk over the street and they will soon see where any money should be spent. Many years ago, I would shop on the street several times a week. You could hardly move for people and it was a place to meet friends and go for a coffee. But now I find it a chalange, where you take your life in your hands dogging cars and there are so few shops of interest. I recall the days where some of the shops like Peter Leasks had canopies above the windows and the street looked more interesting. Now it just looks like a grey carpark. Get rid of all the cars, put in some nice street furniture and local artwork, seating areas etc etc and tidy the place up so we do not feel embarrassed when tourists arrive.

I agree that we don't have to read stuff which we might find offensive, but like others, when reading a local news article, I didn't expect to find the "C" word used. I'm not aware of this locally in the past. I don't read the daily rags due to the gutter journalism used, so I tend to get general news from the BBC and local from Shetland times or Shetland news. For some stupid reason I would expect them to report stories to certain standards. Can we expect to turn on the telly just to hear the weather girl saying it'll be p...sn down tomorrow with a c..t of a wind
-
Maybe I'm just getting on a bit, but I feel the use of bad language, should be discouraged where possible. Is it really necessary to use use the F or C word as part of their reports, I would have thought they would appreciate that many of their readers, both old and young might find this offensive. Also referring to people as "Johnson" rather than say " Mrs Johnson" is in my opinion disrespectful. When did this nonsense start. I'm sure our local media can work to higher standards than the gutter press which I stopped buying years ago.
-
Sorry Colin, I wasn't referring to the Shetland Times, but I agree with your views on 'opinion pieces'
-
And why do you think that Scotland shouldn't have to tighten its belt like the rest if the UK

Does anyone else feel that the news reporting on a linked site is getting a bit close to the bone? Now I'm no prude and will use the occasional explicit now and again, but I'm not sure they are necessary in news reports, which seem to becoming more common. Seeing the use of the "C" word in print, just feels wrong and unnecessary. All that was needed to be reported was that the defendant swore at the sheriff. I also do not like when people in news reports are referred to by their surname only. Eg 'Johnson said they had raised a lot of money for charity'. I feel it's a bit disrespectful. Has the previous editor of the News of the world joined the local news site?

Thanks for that, as I thought, there seems to be no similar comparison with other companies. This does make me think I'm maybe better off staying with what I have. Although I've been on comparison sites and it suggest savings of £250 a year, but I'm always wary of this, and a bit worried to change I case the savings don't end up being anywhere near that suggested. Tempting though

At present I have two meters, one which is for peak and off peak and another for the storage heaters, I'm assuming that the storage heaters will have to be wired into the off peak meter and I will lose the two day and night charges of the heaters and end up with an overnight charge on the off peak. the problem with just an overnight charge is that the heaters could be cold after tea in the winter, resulting in using additional heaters at night on peak charges. The hydro then introduced the two boosts through the day, which work fine. I'm assuming this will be lost when moving to another supplier?
-
The premises was up for sale a few weeks ago
-
good thinking, if I add the off peak to the night rate that should give me a good idea of cost. I'm assuming that I'll lose the boost charges through the day that I currently get with the hydro, and the radiators will just charge the full time on off peak.

Any advice greatfully received.. I'm all electric. I'm looking to change electricity supplier and having been on a comparison site, it says I can save a lot. However the new suppliers tariffs are only peak and off peak, whilst I currently have peak, off peak and heating. They suggested that I would still save just using the peak and off peak, but this has raised so many questions. As my heaters charge up several times during day and night, that meter must be controlled by scot hydro. If I lose this meter, how will I control my heaters to only charge at night? If I only charge during the night, my heaters will be cold by late evening. Has anyone in a similar position changed suppliers and how did this work, or is it the case that Scot Hydro has me over a barrel due to being all electric? Any comments welcome

Yawn... Should Alistair Carmichael resign? Yes - 62 votes [60.19%] No - 41 votes [39.81%] At present, of course. Things may well change, everybody that can vote might take a big, strong stupidity tablet and back him up in the hope that he carries on with his fraudulence and lies. Nope, no tablets left, the SNP lot have used them all up
-
The reason is quite simply double standards. And blinkers on where the SNP are concerned.. I certainly don't recall anyone on this thread saying that the "lies" told by Carmichael are acceptable and he should be left alone to get on with it. But I have noticed how many don't condone what he did but have put it in proportion. Of course the SNP leading the campaign against him, don't have their own agenda, do they? But I suppose if you keep trying to ram misleading statements down people's throats a few might start to believe you. Perhaps there should be an enquiry regarding the amount of misleading statements made by a few on here in order to try to score points.

another typical tactic. Having read the posts on this comment, I do not see anyone condemning the man for being a Christian, the question raised is regarding how backgrounds were kept quiet, the reference was that had possibly been done as it may have an effect on how people voted. When you can't get the better of a disagreement, you resort to ridicule and misdirection to make the opposite view look the weaker. You want to run for the SNP if AC gets turfed out:-)

Well done George, you've managed to wring another wee bit out of an old story. The story will run and run as long as Alistair Carmichael remains in his position. In my opinion he's lost all credibility, he will forever be remembered as the guy who smeared and lied to hold onto his job. We're stuck with a MP who abused his position as a government minister and then lied about it, misleading the electorate in an election in the process. I've heard a few people say this is fine as long as it keeps the SNP out, but at what cost? Are we now willing to give our representatives free reign to abuse their position? It's also worth remembering a majority of 10,000 was reduced to 800 most of them SNP voters who are now the constituents of Alistair Carmichael, how do you think they feel about their representative? Almost as unforgivable is the position of the party he represents, the Lib Dems are forever going on and on about high standards in office and listening to the people, yet when it came to the crunch, when it was one of their own, they backed a bent MP. Exactly, it's your opinion, so why do you insist in constantly packing down the throats of others and constantly trying to suggest that if we don't agree with your opinion then we must be willing to give our reps free reign to abuse their position is ridiculous. I've not heard anyone either on here or on da street suggesting what he did was ok or condoning it in any way. Disappointment yes, but let's keep it in proportion he didn't take a back hander or hurt someone, he leaked a memo, which was later proved to be false. So let's be honest, if it wasn't for the SNP desperately trying to conquer Scotland, this would have gone pretty much unnoticed, rightly or wrongly. Pity your high moral standing doesn't extend to you putting in as much effort into picking up on the faults/mistruths of SNP reps.
-
When the SNP members responsible for mistruths about cutting health spending etc stand down, I would then back the "witch hunt", sorry campaign, for Carmichael to stand down. What I can't stand is the double standards being displayed, which is nothing other then a hidden agenda by the SNP, who will stop at nothing to get their way. Nearly everyone I've spoken too feels this is the case.

if you don't care, then don't read it, the choice is yours.
