Mmmhh! What else would you expect, it's just jobs for the boys club. They all have their noses dug deep in the trough at our expense. When the going gets tough they leave, no doubt with a huge payoff and pension, then they just wait a bit and get a similar job, no doubt with a bigger wage. The same happens in the sic, senior managers leave during reshuffle, with large payoff, then within a short period are back in a similar highly post in the same department. I suppose it makes a change from them becoming councillors.

Whilst I agree that the SCT have to balance the books, the whole thing smells a bit fishy to me. It looks like the SCT were trying to get this budget rushed through without any interference by the council members. So basically we have a small group of non elected and non answerable individuals making these massive decisions on the future of Shetland's money. At least the councillors are answerable to the public. Why do I get the feeling it's all about to go "tits up"

JGHR love that story and as you say justice was served at little expense to the public. Whilst I think the older man had every right to respond and protect himself, considering the dafftie was threatening him and jabbing a knife at his face, the outcome could have been so different. It wasn't long ago that one punch has left a young man permanently disabled, or he could have ended up by being stabbed. 25 years ago the man had the sense to only hit him once and leave it at that. That's unlikely to happen in the world we now live in. Once the guy was on the ground the boot would go in and no doubt several others would have a go as well. Unfortunately life's not as simple as it used to be. My post was a response to another posters quote "a good kicking may do these people the world of good". Whilst your man took, what should be regarded as reasonable action to defend himself, I don't think any of us should be suggesting that the answer to unacceptable behaviour is to dish out a good kicking.
-
I agree with you that the spiked drink excuse does seem a bit far fetched, but I suppose we are not the jury and we have not heard all the evidence. As for a good kicking doing some good, does that not make us as bad as them. If we allow any Tom, Dick or Harry to dish out a kicking, we might as well get rid of the courts and return to the days of hang them high and ask questions later. Those who feel they have some right to dish out the justice might be happy with that, but I'm sure the majority wouldn't be. The courts may not always get it right, but it's a far better system than letting people dish out their own ideas of justice.

I tried to watch the live streaming and had little luck. Last year I got a bit of buffering whilst this year it was so bad it was unwatchable. The junior procession ran without problem with no buffering, obviously less people watching it. Checked speed at teatime was getting the usual 6.0 download speed, but when I checked it during the senior procession it had dropped to 0.2 so it's no wonder it was struggling. After the procession it quickly came back up to 5.5 I'm not far from my exchange, but it seems the system was struggling. Pity 60 North didn't put it on YouTube, so that you could watch it later or the next day. Congrats to 60 North and all the crew for beaming this around the world, but from me, no points to BT for the state of broadband. It's ironic that this could be clearly seen at the other side of the world, but not 10 miles away from the action.

Your absolutely right, no one wants to stifle good debate, we all have a right to put our own views forward and we should do that knowing that some others will disagree with those views and also have the right to voice their opinions. Where I think this forum has fallen short in the past, is that it allowed one individual in particular to constantly harass users and take ownership of the forums, which resulted in people leaving and many people were put off posting. Whilst it is healthy that we do not all agree all the time, it is better for all, if we can have our debates in an adult maner and not be drawn into name calling and personal vendettas against those who we disagree with. Unfortunately, being human, we can sometimes in the heat of the debate fall short of this and that's the time we should step away for a bit or the moderators should step in. Shetlink has thousands of users, so let's hope many more of them will get involved in the forums.

Your absolutely right MuckleJoannie, admin plays an important role in all industries and it covers many aspects of the day to day operation. If £305k is the underspend, you have to wonder what the total costs of admin in the care sector are. The issue I have is that it looks like the council spend considerable amounts on admin and you have to question if the balance of admin and delivery are a bit skewed. I would also question how the "admin" costs for a building still at the design stage is £305k

Does anyone know why I can't find my emoticons whilst using an iPad ? Have checked and the box is ticket to have them on. If I use the iPads emoticons, they just don't appear.
-
Disapeared! Well all I can say it great, hopefully more people will now feel they can contribute to a post without getting a three page reply from him, finding fault in every thing posted As for the council doing something stupid, you won't have to wait long

It does seem a bit quiet on the forums lately, although the classifieds are as busy as usual. According to stats there has been 80 users online in the last 15 minutes, so the site is still very popular. It's great to see you posting rarther than lurking though, it all helps get the forums moving again:-)

Likely a doggy add somewhere. Last year I had similar problems on an iPad, would click on classifieds and find my iPad flipping through various windows usually ending up on a games app, but occasionally on an inappropriate site. After a while it stopped. Ask the mods to check the adds.

Get used to the gates bring shut as I'm sure I read somewhere that they are going to virtually half the current opening hours. No country skips, dump hardly open! yip, only the SIC can see this as a positive way forward. Let's hope folk don't return to dumping stuff owre da banks.

Several thoughts come to mind. - I would have thought the contract is between the purchaser and the retailer. The retailer should therefore replace or refund. - If people can name and rubbish the coop for having a poor car park, why cant you name a local retailer who doesn't seem to be complying with the sale of goods act. - How often do we hear that we should buy locally, mainly because if you have a problem it is easily repaired etc. This proves there is little benefit of buying locally from this retailer anyway. I ordered a tv off the Internet, arrived not working, emailed them and was told they would send off another that day and collect the faulty one. No issues or problems. New tv arrived within 3 days. - You may find extra protection if this was purchased by credit card. - If I were the purchaser, I would head straight to the shop and demand a replacement or full refund and if this wasn't forthcomming, I would advise them I would now be going directly to trading standards. - keep in mind though, that there are lots of good local retailers who do provide an excellent after service and let's hope trading standards can put this retailer right, as this does little to encourage buying local.

Wishing all shetlinkers a very merry Christmas and a happy new year when it comes. Hope you all got something nice from santy.

ahhw come on, whilst I get pee'd off by lazy shoppers who find it difficult to walk the 10 yards in order to put their trolley away safely, I still feel the coop also has a responsibility to be checking the car park on a regular basis and clear rouge trollies. With the winds at this time of year they tend to get blown into people's cars causing expensive repairs. If I don't feel it's safe to leave my car in their car park, then I would stop shopping there. As for the pot holes, they could have done something with them by now, after all it's been in a poor state of repair for a long while. it may well be private property, but it's hardly enticing customers.

support for elderly and disabled people in Shetland
Windwalker replied to owlsaway's topic in Anything & Everything Else
The issue is that there is money in the pot, but the Charitable Trust will no doubt remove what remains of the "Christmas Bonus" saving themselves some cash to spend on some pet project. What they have not done is suggested how they will continue to support those who are particularly in need. It looks like the CT are just washing their hands of this area of support. As they say "it's just too much work for them" the poor soles. Well I suppose what should we expect from a bunch of people, who most, have not been democratically elected by the general public. I wonder what's the reason they are on the, CT as it's obviously not for the benefit of the less well off. When you look at the list of Trustees, most will likely have good council pensions and don't know what it's like to have very little and have to go without in order to keep their homes warm or feed their bellies. If it's too much work for you, then move over and let a few people with some midder wit get in there and sort it out. In my opinion if you remove this, you should be very ashamed of yourselves. -
Your right Kafka, Fatal Paper Cut should step away from the keyboard, but not for the reason you suggest. He/She should stop bitching. Never post for ages, then bites anytime Mareel is mentioned. Then she/he can't have a reasoned discussion, just continues to bitch at other posters veiws, should change his/her name to "Fatal Tounge"

My other pet hate is: People who drive at 40 - 45 in a 60 area and when you eventually see a clear stretch and signal to pass them they speed up as you get along side and you then have to decide whether its safer to fall back again or go over the speed limit to get past them. Having decided it was safer to fall back, they slow down to 40 again, holding up a pile of traffic.

Have to agree that some driving in Shetland is worrying at the moment, and the huge increase in traffic is very noticeable. My bug bear is some of the local taxi drivers, who think they have a God given right to stop in the middle of the road to pick up or drop off pasengers, when there is a parking place to pull in 20 feet away. They seem to think it's ok to hold up other traffic as their pasengers have a conversation. Just this morning I came up to a parked car, and a taxi stopped opposite it blocking the road and the conversation with the passenger seemed to go on for ever. Then I noticed a car comming from behind me to overtake, just to realise the road was blocked, yip you guessed it, another taxi. The first taxi could have pulled in either in front or behind of the parked car, which would have been safer for their pasenger and would not block the road. However it is worth mentioning that when walking the dogs, I find the majority of drivers to be very aware of me on the road, they usually slow down and give a wide berth, usually with a smile and wave. Interestingly the minority who fly past me well over the speed limit seems to be young women. "Girl racers"

If the new school was building a sports hall as part of their building, very few people would question it, as most people would accept a school needs a sports hall. The cost of building a sports hall onto the school would cost the education department a considerably more money than the proposal being suggested. The other issue is space on the site, the additional cost of digging out the Staney hill to fit a large sports hall is a non starter. Using Clickimin is a sensible solution, it reduces the costs to the council, as compared to building its own sports hall. The issue then for Clickimin is available space for its current regular bookings and users. The proposal of a covered outdoor area is likely the easiest and cheapest solution, it creates a good space for the school to use all year round along with the bonus of being hired out to the public and groups in the evenings, weekends and during all holidays. I would assume the charges taken will meet the running and maintenance costs. Common sense tells me this is the best option for Clickimin, the new school and the various groups who will make good use of it. The idea and costs involved in the new school having its own separate gym hall would be many times the cost of this facility and would not offer the access this can. My only reservation has to be the quality of the building and its ability withstand Shetland weather, but the Recreational Trust have considerable experience in building facilities, so I can only ensure that they have done thier homework.

The priority has to be ensuring sufficient cover for those who need it. But you have to ask who is meant to be managing this service, and are they capable of doing so. How has it been allowed to get into this position. Surely it's time that someone starts kicking backsides and holding those responsible for such poor management of essential services. Unfortunately time has shown that those in high paid posts seem to be Teflon coated and whether it's council or health board, they continue to pick up thier large salaries while providing mediocre service at the expense of the end user or rate payer. Being a "manager" is easy when it's not your own money your playing with and when enough mistakes are made you can walk away with a huge financial package, all on us the tax payer. Then you can become a councillor and start all over again.

Ha ha ha, I've never laughed so much This has to be one of those tounge in cheek adverts or is it a spoof? If "Bob" is getting such good broadband speeds 9 mile up a side road, I would like to ask BT why I struggle at times and I could throw a stone and hit my exchange from my house. As for the bit about Bob known help is only a phone call away.. He obviously hasn't had to constantly try to tell the person on BTs " help desk" that there is a major outage in Shetland and no, there is nothing wrong with my equipment. Of course the exchange may be up the same 9 mile side road, which would explain it.

Delighted for these folk in the big smoke who can now access super fast broadband. Hopefully this has not been at the expense of country areas. My broadband has been playing up over the last few weeks and at times can't even run a speed checker. I have to reset the router, then I get around 3 Mbps, which is less then half the 6.5 I normally get. Funny though, they still take the full payment every month, not half. Perhaps it will settle down again, but meanwhile do I really have to phone BT to be told there's nothing wrong yet again?

Back on subject, what could be useful would be a couple of days of roadside lights checks, where vehicles are pulled in and all lights checked, not with the intention of charging people, but to advise if any problems need to be fixed. This would be both educational and prior advertising would get people thinking and hopefully checking their lights. This would be a good time of year to do it with folk having to drive in the dark again. If time can be found to do speed checks I'm sure some time could be set aside for light checks.

I'm all for everyone having the right to express an opinion, what I can't stand is being continually talked down to and constantly told what 'we' should do, or that's not what it's like here etc. in my opinion, people who have an opinion on, and feel they have to challenge nearly every thread, either have little to do, or just enjoy being difficult for the hell of it.
