Whilst I agree with George that Some in Westminster would love to see the SNP in turmoil and I would think their main reason for this would be that they do not want to see the country broken up, you have to question why bringing an ex first minister, who is no longer in the Scottish Parliament to court, in anyway effects the current SNP.

I would guess this is more to do with people within the SNP then it is with Westminster after all, most if not all, of the complainers were SNP staff. He did of course take the SNP to court, that in itself tells me the man has major issues with the party he was once the leader of.

If you actually read the article it is suggesting any conspiracy was by the SNP not Westminster 

Not sure how you’ve come to that conclusion George. Alex Salmond was taken to court, a Scottish court, due to complaints made to the police by a number of women. The court rightly or wrongly found him not guilty. Your conspiracy theory that it was an attempt by Westminster to destroy the SNP Just doesn’t make sense. Being a royalist has nothing to do with it either.

I would think the 3rd party was the large number of people who brought the complaint against him, still don’t understand why you think this is Westminster’s fault.

George, as usual you seem to think that every issue is the blame of Westminster. This was a Scottish man tried in a Scottish court in Edinburgh. What does Westminster have to do with it?

As far as I know, is it not only the counter area which will be available, perhaps that floor. I’m assuming the sorting areas will still be operating as normal, well at least until they relocate that as well.

im also assuming I’ll still be able to pick up parcels from the main building as I can’t see the post delivery staff putting undelivered items to Chonocies as they won’t have the room.

This move by the post office has been a shambles from the start, it seems that this was all decided before they had their so called consultation with the public. It is obviously purely led by savings, rather then service, so it comes as no surprise that staff pay and conditions will not be retained.

some of the staff have served us well for many years and their knowledge and experience will be a great loss. This is how people are now rewarded for long service and commitment. The bosses who have made this decision should be ashamed of themselves, but of course they will continue to collect their overpaid salaries.

So Lerwick town centre will now have a small overcrowded post office, with inexperienced staff,  poor disabled parking on a busy pedestrian part of the street.  But hey, that’s progress. 
 

I for one will just use Bolts, good service, queuing inside and free parking.

 

Whilst some of the decisions in votes recently has not gone the way I personally voted, I really think it’s time some people got over themselves and start accepting democracy. Christ, they never stop greetin. We’ve had elections and votes and we should, regardless of the outcome, be gracious enough to accept it. This idea that you just keep on arguing is what no doubt lost you the vote, but for some reason you can’t see it.

Seems like we’re getting 14 copies of each article  

Is it just me or is anyone else getting repeat copies of news items, the last one from the Shetland times on the election hustings is repeated no less than 14 times. This seems to have been going on for over a week. It happening with Shetland news articles as well.

 

Corbyn just sits on the fence with everything as he thinks not choosing a side is his safest vote winner. 

 

That's unfair. He regularly gets hauled over the coals precisely because of his convictions / principles.

 

Boris' repeated one liner during the entire debate clearly demonstrated their thinking that branding him a fence sitter, on what is quite an easy stance to comprehend, is a vote winner. As does the majority of the terrified media owners given their propensity to repeat it ad nauseum. Trying to take all sides into consideration is not a character flaw and plenty times he's been proven right.

 

We obviously differ in our opinion of Mr Corbyn, I see a man that will not make his position clear on a number if issues which makes it very difficult to vote for Labour  as you have no idea what direction he would follow, should he get in. 

Whilst trying to sell his manifesto, saying what he would give away and put money towards he forgets to mention things like doing away with the single persons discount on the roof tax or what ever they call it now. These are things that can have a huge effect on elderly single folk who are already on the bread line, but they try to keep that quiet.

The last time they were in power they nearly bankrupted the country, requiring years of austerity which they then blame the conservatives for. All I’m reading in various news items is his manifesto cannot be paid for without raising taxes considerably and that’s before he buys out rail, post etc. Then they want to give more power to the unions so they can call strikes at the drop of a hat.

In my opinion Labour  will bring this country to its knees and someone will have to come along and tighten the belts again. 

mind you in saying all that, I’m not convinced any of the parties are suitable at present to sort out this country. As yet I’m lost who to vote for, but I do know it won’t be Labour under Mr Corbyn.

 

And if Scotland decided that it wanted to go Independent, what chance would there be of Westminster honouring it? We've been stripped bare the whole way, ever since James VI gave us away - purely for his own benefit.

 

Boris flat out wouldn't allow it. He said so on the last debate... not that what he says and what he does often align in reality. Corbyn wouldn't allow it initially as he wants a chance to put the country right, which, while a tall order, sounds sensible to me.

I think some people believe if they keep saying something long enough, they will fool other folk into believing it. IMHO Scotland couldn’t go it alone without hefty taxation and reduction in spending. The current deficit is large enough and we are already taxed at a higher rate than the rest of the U.K.  

If Scotland decide they want independence and Shetland votes against it, I hope the SNP will honour our position and allow the will of Shetland to remain with the rest of the U.K if it wishes too.

The more I listen to any of these politicians, the more fed up I feel. None of them can be trusted and they will twist the truth, promise the world, then go back on their promises. We’ve seen it all before.

As I’ve said before this current uk parliament and the Scottish parliament have decided to ignore the people’s democratic votes, so let’s hope they all lose their seats and some fresh blood gets voted in.

The EU would bend over backwards to have the honour of having Scotand as its 27th member in the event of independence, we'd not only be invited, we'd be fast tracked back into the club.

Of course the people against Scottish independence have their own agenda and that's to try and convince the gullible how impossible everything will be, telling them how useless and pitiful they are and how nobody else would have them is the order of the day for most of the naysayers.

The reality of course is a million miles from this, the goodwill Scotland has from their friends in every European capital is phenomenal.

Scotland's been a member of the EU for 40+ years as part of the UK, they don't want us or anybody else to leave.

Glad to hear dat. As I wasn’t there I could only make a judgment on the news articles I saw on the bbc and itv news. The overall felling I had was negative towards the protest, not the issue they were protesting about. The deliberate act of doing their utmost to disrupt the general public in many different ways, did them no favours and in my opinion they chose the wrong targets. Holding up traffic, whilst they did their strange dancing, did nothing but anger folk.

I don’t have the answers of how to get this important message across, but I don’t think their two weeks of disruption wasn’t  the answer either and most folk I spoke to were negative towards the protest. Kinda shot themselves in the foot me thinks.

I would think the majority of folk switched off after watching news reports about the antics of some of the protesters. We will have to disagree about them getting their point across, as I think they failed drastically.

Im all for anyone exercising their right to peaceful protest, but this was nothing but. They broke the law by climbing on top of trains and disrupted “normal folk” from getting to work, hospital appointments etc.

Im sure there are lots of normal folk amongst them with good intentions, but to say they were brawley successful in their objectives can only suggest their objectives were to disrupt people using one of the most environmentally friendly forms of transport. I’m yet to meet anyone, with the accept ion if yourself who thinks they did a good job.

Muckle Oxters, that might be the stance you wish to take but, it’s important to recognise the difference between disagreeing with their tactics and acknowledging the message they made such a hash of getting across.

I would have no doubt that their tactics likely caused more carbon in the atmosphere. 

I fully accept that climate change is an issue which will take some inventive thinking, and as I get older I’m more conscious of my carbon footprint, doing what I can to reduce it.

But come on, if anyone thinks the shambles of a protest, with their climbing on electric trains, disrupting everyday commuters and dancing around looking like half stoned hippies has helped their cause, they are as off their heads as a lot of those protesters appeared.

This type of protesting does little to bring people on board and has more than likely put more people off.

If they stopped paying child credit after the 2nd child, that would not only reduce the population but save tax payers money

 

If you look back 50 years we used to have a lot more whitefish processing factories, employing lots of land based staff. They were all over the place. Now it seems to be mainly salmon processing. I’m assuming whitefish landings are mainly shipped out whole to other places for processing.

 

It always annoys me that a bit of “sooth branded” breaded haddock is a heck o a lot cheaper than locally caught stuff. When I was young we had fish at least twice a week as it was a good and cheap lunch, now I only buy local fish as a special treat.

 

As for the local industry being wiped out, I would think the large pelagic boats are still making money, or they wouldn’t be buying new ones. The white fish fleets is another issue and I would without doubt blame that on the common fisheries policy.

Yeah du’s right on dat, but I wonder what percentage of whitefish landings are actually processed in Shetland

How about the site half way up the north road where Peterson’s had his peat cutting business. Nice flat site, with views, plenty of space to extend, not to built up for helicopter landings, clear access for ambulances and could easily be added to existing town bus services.
