I would have thought the ness of sound might be considered as they would be able to put the helipad on da roof, don’t think they could do that at bolts. perhaps da old school site at the knab would be better suited for a hospital, then crammed in houses with no/little parking, but they might have to avoid rooms facing the graveyard

I’ve always thought that the problem with new builds having to meet such strict insulation properties, having central heating and no chimney is that there is no air moving through the house. Whilst my insulation is not the best, I open some windows for a while every morning and let the air through the house. Not good for heat loss, but I believe better for my health. The house soon heats up again. I also have a temp gauge which tells me the humidity levels and if reading dry, I again open a window for a while.

Its good to see that there are a large number of candidates. I would rather see a by-election where the public have to make their choice, as against someone gets in because no one else was interested. At least the outcome of this vote should be accepted by all, although I see there is an snp candidate, so we might have to have another vote if they dont like the outcome

If you look back 50 years we used to have a lot more whitefish processing factories, employing lots of land based staff. They were all over the place. Now it seems to be mainly salmon processing. I’m assuming whitefish landings are mainly shipped out whole to other places for processing. It always annoys me that a bit of “sooth branded” breaded haddock is a heck o a lot cheaper than locally caught stuff. When I was young we had fish at least twice a week as it was a good and cheap lunch, now I only buy local fish as a special treat. As for the local industry being wiped out, I would think the large pelagic boats are still making money, or they wouldn’t be buying new ones. The white fish fleets is another issue and I would without doubt blame that on the common fisheries policy.

It seem that Trump is trying to change what he sees as an unfair tariff arrangement, he believes that America is getting the short straw between them and the EU. He’s doing this all over the world. The result will likely just be increased costs for everyone. He has promised a great deal with the U.K. when/if they leave the EU, which may or may not re-address these tariffs. My concern is that I wouldn’t trust this man as far as I could throw him. He changes his mind on the turn of a button, and falls out with people like a primary school child, then seems to hold grudges. Of course if the U.K. leaves the EU, it can then agree these arrangements with all other countries including the EU. Whether Trump will stick to his promises, well your guess is as good as mine. If Sturgeon has her way and Scotland votes to leave the U.K. and somehow manages to re-join the EU, then we are stuck with the tariffs they set/agree with the likes if America. Things will only get more complicated whatever road we go down

This type of rhetoric, and use of language is exactly why the news today is all about the need for all sides to calm down. It’s doing nothing but ‘firing up’ the debate and creating further divisions. The discussions or ‘playing to the audience’ in parliament yesterday was nothing more than an absolute disgrace by all sides. Whilst this continues there will be no way forward.

SLAP, SIC et all public property musical chairs.
Windwalker replied to Ghostrider's topic in Shetland News
I would have thought that anyone buying property would get their own valuation and not just take the valuation from the seller as the report suggests. Will our Council never learn and what are these employees on good wages being paid for. Mind you I might try to sell them my old caravan, I’m valuing it at £20k (-: -
Again a question for the employer, but if your are outgoing enough as you seem to be you will soon make friends with other workmates and there are plenty of pubs, sports and leisure facilities etc giving you the opportunity to meet local folk, most of who are easy to get on with. As for Brexit, I wouldn’t worry too much, no matter what happens sooner or later, I cant see Boris throwing out all the foreign workers overnight as he would bring the country to a stop. If your happy the agency is legit, go for it, what’s the worst that could happen. Just make sure you have enough funds to get you home again in case you can’t settle. Good luck with whatever you choose.

Yes, I have.Actually, I'm using the services of an employment agency. Very nice guy explains all my questions very carefully and patiently. He seems very friendly and honest. But some of my friends try to discourage me, they have bad experience with jobs in the UK, to say it openly. (They suggest there is enough interesting jobs in the European Union mainland countries. However what is precious to me personally is just your Islands unique nature, indeed!) I feel very confused, hesitated a lot, seem now not in the position to negotiate and demand further information. I would contact the hotel directly and confirm with them that tag agency is above board

If I’m correct the Shetland hotel, in Lerwick has a recently new built accommodation block for staff, the planning application said it would contain 6 x 2 bedroom self catering houses, if it the Shetland hotel your going to work for then that could be the accommodation on offer. Some if the other hotels in Lerwick, like the queens hotel , certainly used to have staff blocks. If you have a formal offer from a Lerwick based hotel, I would think there shouldn’t be an issue, but why don’t you contact them to get more details on the accommodation to put your mind at rest.

I’m sure if I recall they have applied for permission to take down the old rusty sheeting of their premises at Garthspool, but stated they wanted to retain the steel frame. Coincidence Ghostie ?

A drive through post office would have been the answer

You just have to wonder how much this whole process is costing the country and how much good this ‘new found money’ could have done for the less well off in society. No matter what you voted, we can all agree on one thing. We are in a shambles with no light at the end of the tunnel.

I wouldn’t have thought Conchies would be big enough as the queues in the existing one are often out the door. But I suppose it works at Bolts and that’s not very big.

@ Davy. P Interestingly, in the article you just linked to, it states the EU were in the process of reducing staff levels by 5% from 2013 to 2017. Great to see that they are trying to do something, but as this was 2013 - 2017 I wonder what the outcome was and how levels are doing now. Done a quick search and couldn’t find anything.
-
Completely agree Davy, but it’s the way some look to demand answers and can’t wait to find fault rather than engage in the discussion. If you look back through the forums you see a lot of names who used to post on a regular basis, some of them who I know have said that they gave up due to their posts being attacked. There are people of all walks of life, some who will do their homework before posting and other who might just react to a post that interests them, but when they feel they are being ‘got at’ they just fade into the darkness and we are then left with a small number of strongly opinionated folk. Most folk don’t need the hassle in their lives, so don’t bother posting which is a shame as it doesn't give a balanced view.

I can understand Urabug’s concern about the numbers employed by the EU, I would assume they have grown considerably over the years and will no doubt continue to grow, costing more and more money. The perception is that this is a money guzzling organisation, with some people on huge salaries. One in particular is well reported for attending meetings whilst well over the influence. This does not say to me that this is an organisation which runs as well as it should, considering the money we all pay in to it. Maybe if more people like Urabug asked what they all do, we might have more acceptance of them. Whilst the comparison with Birmingham City Council helps put it into perspective, I for one have a good idea what all these jobs in Birmingham will be, whilst we don’t know enough about the EU staffing positions. If you only count the admin jobs at Birmingham, the comparison get further apart. Whilst I think it’s correct to try and back up your facts, sometimes, particularly in the current climate, we all need let of a bit of steam and say what we think, it might not be right or wrong, but unfortunately there are a few who look like they are sitting at their keyboards waiting to jump on anyone who dares to post their thoughts, demanding them to justify everything they say, acting as if they are in charge. Well keep it up and you’ll only have yourself to argue with.

Hard right I suspect you meant yes of course

From memory he made a number of requests at the EU reform bill and won some and lost some, if I recall correctly, in order to appease the hard left of the party who felt the EU hadn’t bent enough, he made a promise to hold a referendum, something he did not have to do. Again if I remember correctly the main issue was to do with free movement. The rest is history.

I cannot recall from memory other than I remember news items about him going to the eu, but I’m sure there ones on here who can. Look it up, I might when I have time

Yes Cameron started this, but the whole if parliament agreed to proceed
