Great to see that despite Brexit Cadbury has decided to bring most of its production of dairy milk chocolate back to Bournville from factories in Germany and across Europe. This has to be good for British jobs and the economy.

Plus, it just happens to be my favourite chocolate

Having followed many discussions for some time, it comes up, particularly with one individual, in addition whilst the word may not be mentioned the content says it all.
unfortunately all governments be it U.K. or SNP make false and misleading statements all the time, as far as I’m concerned I really don’t trust any of them. My worry is those who can’t see fault in certain parties and hit out at anyone who dares not to agree with their views, over powering the conversation, nit picking and therefore stiffening discussion. I’ve seen that on many forums including Shetlink.

Whilst I accept that government are constantly trying to score political points against each other, wouldn’t it be great if those in power would all work together to defeat this pandemic for the good of the population. Rant over.

Not at all roachmill everyone is entitled to their views and to question the government. God help us when folk don’t.
My issue with not accepting democracy was aimed at those who keep saying it was not done democratically, whilst at the same time unwilling to provide any proof of that.  You go ahead and and stick to your views. Fill your boots.

So really what your saying is that you don’t care what the outcome or effects on the country might be as long as you feel you’ve gone one up on England for something that happened in the 1600s. Wow you can hold a grudge for some time George.

Vote SNP ! WHY. George I gave you every opportunity a couple of nights ago to give me some good reasons why we should vote for independence, yet your only and consistent reply is because you clearly hate Westminster. Nothing about how we will benefit as a country and nothing about the negative effects of independence. You clearly want us to close our eyes, cover our ears, vote SNP and hope for the best.

Westminster isn’t giving away our fishing waters, they are taking it back. The SNP on the other hand intends to put it back under EU control, who will give more of it away to foreign vessels, just as they are doing to Irish waters. Open your eyes.

vote anything bar the sort that hang around Westminster. Including Ian Blackford and his pals!
They are, after all,  politicians and in in for the glory and the power.  I don't believe the greater majority are in it for the People. They just want a seat at the Lairds table.

^ Very true. The trouble is the arrogant know-it-alls who are trying to convince that Scot's independence is the thing and have their eye on the top jobs of such an entity. are giving scant sign of even giving a damn how others have made it work, let alone taking any of their tried and tested ideas on board.
The 'Document' produced by the SNP prior to the last referendum is all the evidence you need, extremely heavy on soundbite, catchphrase romanticised 'independence' and fluffy light on any meat.
Make the idea work robustly on paper, with hard facts and numbers, and enough folk might just go for Indy, but its pitiful the way indy supporters have gone whining on since the referendum with excuses as to how/why they were 'done over', when all they ever gave the rest of us to vote on was the sizzle, not the steak.

my experience on here is if you dare to question anything about the SNP, several will come at you, but if you ask them to clarify, provide information or justify etc, they rarely do, with a few exceptions.
Where some are concerned, their modus operandi seems to be, to try and shut you up and rather than discuss the issue they will say, such and such is worse etc. They cannot see any wrong doing by anyone in the SNP. Luckily there are a few SNP supporters who will have a good discussion and I appreciate they have their views as I do. Of course they are wrong though

Yes, if I recall, you’ve brought that up a few times.
The point is they all have many faults, but most of us can see that, certain Folk on here seem determined that the SNP must get in, regardless of the future effects independence  might have on people and the economy. Blinkers tightly secured and smash forward without knowing the consequences. Nothing matters except independence. I agree with Hakama, “these people are deluded” IMHO of course.

Yes indeed @Windwalker. One of the challenges is that referendums are not ‘native’ to the UK/devolved parliaments’ legislative systems in that they’re not particularly regularly used so have few legal precedents, and each time they are used they need the rules to be agreed beforehand.
Another challenge is that ‘democracy’ itself is a loosely defined principle rather than an off-the-shelf set of processes.
It all sets the scene for claims and counter claims that referendums, their results and subsequent processes are either democratic or undemocratic. It’s understandable that the public might see it like that (most people don’t have an interest in the finer points of legislative systems) but it’s shameful when politicians, who are elected and paid to understand legislative systems, manipulate and deceive the public regarding referendums - Brexit was a prime example of how to use a referendum to debase a legislative system and manipulate the public which has led directly to another referendum which may well lead to the demise of the union that Brexit sought to embolden. It’s almost poetic!

Jo Swinson declined to respect that the Liberal party had a number of supporters who were in agreement of Brexit ,which she was very much against, and IMHO this cost her,her place in parliament and the Liberal leadership.
Nichola Sturgeon would be well advised to take into account that not everyone who votes SNP necessarily want independence and may as a result vote elsewhere to her and her party cost.

I though our councillors were bad at times, but could not stop laughing at the antics of these lot during their zoom meeting. Here’s a snippet, but it’s well worth watching the longer version.

Thanks for that George, glad to make someone a bit happier in the current climate. I must point out though, that whilst I see a way that ‘a’ Scottish government might over a long period of time convince the Scottish people, I no way agree with the current thoughts and attitudes of the SNP, in particular to how they are going about it, their timing and the disregard to more than half the populations previous vote less than 6 years ago.
The unfortunate outcome is that our country remains so divided.

We are clearly at opposite ends on this and I agree I’m completely against independence in this manner, where the country has already made a decision some short years ago and were in the middle of a pandemic. My position was that I wanted to see if I was missing something. Unfortunately there is little that has convinced me that we’re not better of in the union.

You will be surprised to learn that I’m not completely against independence. Personally what I’d like to see is the Scottish government convincing me they can improve our lot, devolved issues like education improve rather than decline, then let’s seek more devolved areas and bit by bit get to a stage where it makes sense to our population to take that final step, where the evidence is clear that it makes good sense for the country. I’m sorry if you disagree with me but I can’t see the evidence at this point in time. It just too big a risk in my opinion.
Clearly my joke offended you, that was not it’s intention so I’m happy to apologise, I thought the winky emoji would confirm that it was a joke.
Where we stand at present I’m not convinced that Sturgeon will get another vote in the near future and even if she does, I hope that with the obvious lack of clear information she doesn’t win. As a back up plan in case she wins, I hope Shetland has the sense to become a crown dependency. I’ll likely be 6 feet under by that time.
However if we were to take peerie steps meantime. I might jump on board.
    Lets agree to disagree.

The mussel farmers in Shetland don’t export any to the EU so they will be fine.
Griegs problems had nothing to do with brexit as they themselves have said and the other salmon companies in Shetland are doing fine.
The main impact on the mussel and Finfish industry at the moment is COVID and not Brexit, as restaurants etc are closed or needing less product.

@George. you've peppered this and many other threads with vague, inaccurate and often xenophobic posts about things being 'inflicted' on 'us' and how it is 'undemocratic' but have failed to offer any detail. You ignore questions directly posed to you about your accusations but you demand that other users justify their points. You're trolling, and it's tedious. You have also been warned and blocked several times so we're removing your repetitious posts and our fingers are hovering over the 'ban' button unless you back up your accusations with evidence or reasoning.
So in an effort to move on positively, please do provide some evidence or reasoning why joining the EEC or EU was undemocratic, why Westminster is undemocratic or what exactly Ted Heath, Anthony Eden, James VI or whoever else did that you don't like. Thanks in advance, the Shetlink admins.

Yes indeed @Windwalker. I'm quite interested in politics but I felt iill-equipped to make an informed decision on Brexit due to the amount of conflicting information in circulation, and most other people I spoke in any depth about it were in the same boat. TBH I was quite suspicious of folk's motives if they proclaimed to be absolutely sure one way or the other!
I did find it helpful to discuss it here on Shetlink though as there are many people with different views and discussion was often around the Shetland context, and I find it helpful to have my opinion challenged - all too often discussion happens in groups or media sources that have already made up their minds and it just attracts people with the same opinions, thus bolstering the single point of view.
At the end of the day, I suppose any vote comes down to (a) how satisfied you are with the status quo and (b) how willing you are to roll the dice in the hope something better will emerge if you vote for a change.
