fionajohn this is no ploy by Westminster I assure you. This is a grass-roots political movement started by the people of Shetland for the people of Shetland. The only way we will be "conquered" is if we allow things to continue the way they are instead of standing up for ourselves. 

Not surprised riskaccesed, I've had similar issues with garages up here. The problem is lack of competition, they have it too easy and don't need to work hard to gain or retain business. Waiting 4 weeks to get new brake discs and pads fitted after an mot failure, was my last experience. Told it was due to several errors, not ordered, wrong ones arrived etc etc. Got fed up phoning every day to see if the car was ready and left it for a week then when I phoned, they said, oh yeh I think it was done twa days ago. Not only did I have to manage without the car for 4 weeks I've had to pay a months road tax and insurance for something I couldn't use. Then to top it all one of the brakes was binding when I got it back, so I had to return with it to get them to sort it. Then I had to sit down when the bill came in. 
looked at the price of second hand cars here last year and ended up getting an immaculate, low mileage model south, which was three years newer than the one I looked at at the local garage for less money.
 
They really all need to try a bit harder.

Having read through this thread and at first thinking, this is just too big for us, I must say that I am impressed with the answers that have been given to lots of the questions raised. The debate has remained grounded and this is not just pie in the sky stuff.
 
Yes, there are lots of unanswered questions and there will be lots of hoops to jump through and neither Westminster and Hollyrood are going to make this easy. Hollyrood in particular will not want to see the goose that laid the golden egg get out of their grasp.
 
Difficult it may be, but so are the alternatives. Remain as we are and the likelihood is we will be dragged into an independant, centralised Scotland, and once the Scottish government has complete control over us, we will be lucky if we get the scraps of the table. The stories of Vikings robbing and pillaging us, may be fact or fiction, but the stories of both the UK and Scottish governments doing the same are happening as we speak.
 
So yes, I think it's time for something different and time to take control over our own destiny, rather than be dictated to by folk that have their own agendas at the forefront and not the interest of Shetland or its population.

All new ideas have to start somewhere and this could be the beginning of something that will change everything in Shetland for the better for us and our children who come after us.
Many people will be skeptical and think that we can't do this. If every person/group who ever tried to do something different listened to the skeptics then what kind of world would we live in?
If you are at all interested in creating a new, fairer, prosperous society without all the corruption, elitism, poverty and unfairness of the current UK system then please consider coming to this launch to show your support. If you do not want to join the group at the meeting there will be no pressure to do so.
Shetland CAN stand on its own. We are a unique place in so many ways and we have the resources here to achieve what few other places on the planet can.

Seems like the speed might be "relative" in so much as the filming(?) vehicle might have slowed down a little in order to avoid becoming involved in an accident.
 
However, if what others have suggested that the vehicle might have been "speed limited", I think that the driver was "stupid" to try and overtake anyway and, if it is correct that the vehicle being overtaken increased it's speed instead of decreasing it, then, that was also "stupid"
 
Hard to say really but, both drivers need a quite severe "talking to" and, both need some testosterone removed.

It's just a pity that folk seem to enjoy to hang, draw and quarter someone on public forums rather than let due process take its course, and in addition seem to get so much satisfaction out of other people's troubles.
 
You say you won't make the mistake of voting lib/dem again, I can only assume from that statement that you believe any future lib/dem candidates cannot be trusted, a rather strange view to take.
 
I don't know who you support, but I'm assuming it's SNP. Perhaps you should start judging some of their tactics and if you believe that the party is responsible if an individual member misleads the public, you won't find any parties left to vote for
 
I'm all for action to ensure our politicians are above board, but I think this case has been blown out of proportion, clearly for political purposes.

The SNP and UKIP would never stoop to this kind of behaviour.

No one will ever write a political manifesto again, no one will ever dare make another budget day speech.  Can we expect to see the likes of YOU now personally taking the Colgate Kid aka Tony Blair to Court for his WMD speech?

Far more important and destructive things going on in the world just now that could do with the thousands of pounds which are being spent on this,what to me is a trivial matter,for which after all he did apologise.

It is the folk who are feeding the fat cat lawyers and keeping them in buisness who in my opinion are in the wrong.
 
Surprised anyone would want to put themselves in a such prominent position these days if this is all it takes to cause disquiet.
 
I'm sure we all know of instances in the course of our work where "lies" have been told by staff and bosses but was not blown out of all reasoning ,resulting with court appearances and possible loss of career.

He may have been cleared of wrongdoing, but he clearly, in my opinion, misled the public. May not be illegal but very questionable. Would you trust him any more than you would trust Cameron.
 
As I said before too much is being made out of the whole issue,. I always wonder what the motives are of a few individuals who have gone to so much bother. If it was due to politition dishonesty, they could have tarred and feathered a few others long before this.

OMG, Windwalker!  There has to be an enquiry!  You are deliberately misleading here because you mean the EU not Europe surely? Could you elaborate on whether that's personal or political stance you've taken there please, was that statement as a voter or as an individual?

Ahw come on, do you really think this would have got this far if the SNP had have won. In my opinion this is nothing other than sour grapes and clearly an attempt to get a second chance at election.
 
Whilst I agree that our MPs should all tell the truth, I see this as a drop in the ocean compared with what's gone on before with all parties. It was a stupid thing to do, but no one died. Get over it.
 
Now do you think it was ok for Alex Salmon to state that Scotland would remain part of the U.K. If it went independant, when the powers to be were clearly saying this was not the case. In my opinion he was trying to deceive the electorate. ? But that's ok isn't it ?

Thanks for the update. As I said it was many years ago. Having spoken to a friend he could tell me that the Recreational trust did look after maintenance, insurance and the like some 10 years ago, but no doubt it has changed hands since then. Regardless of who is now responsible for the boat, it's a shame that something which was provided for less able users is now being sold. I'm sure getting out on the water for pleasure, fishing etc would have been a great experience for those with disabilities.
The running costs must have been a drop in the ocean to the Charitable Trust. But I suppose their money is better spent employing a publicity officer or whatever the title is.

What I don't like is that you can no longer do a weekly shop as the use by dates are so short. So it's costly to get there especially when they rub your nose in it by giving you a receipt for cheap fuel.
 
I've had a number of items which have gone off before the use by date and was told I should have brought them in before the date ran out, but it was cheaper to dump them then having to run into town.
 
try buying a loaf of bread that you can use before the date runs out.
 
As for the home delivery, the last time I looked I could not find a slot for 8 days. So haven't bothered since. Collection is an option but again half the stuff has to be used within a few days, so I'd rather go in and get stuff from the back of the shelf, or find something else.

Firstly, yes, people want the Shetland Times to report what actually happened, but let's be honest they don't need to print the actual words to let us know that "unacceptable" language was used. After all this is a family news paper and I would not be keen to have my kids reading this. The more you put this language in print, the more normal it becomes. Radio Shetland managed to report on this same issue without resorting to swearing on air. Perhaps their reporters are more able to write a report in a professional manner in comparison with the Times ones, who just copy what's said.
 
Now as for "you don't have to read it" attitude, well your wrong, we buy our local paper to read and I for one do not want the Times reporting go down the road of the red top rags, which I refuse to buy. It's a local family news paper and should report with that in mind.
 
The only person with their head in the clouds seems to be yourself . Probably worth noting that Shetlinks standards do not allow swear words, which many would find offensive. As my parents used to say ' this would never have been allowed in Basil's Wisharts day' it's a pity the Times can't find reporters who can provide a story without reverting to such poor standards.

When I lived in Shetland I never got a single spam call, but since moving I get inundated. Mainly to do with boilers and green energy. It started when I joined NPower. I've now bought one of those BT 8500 Call blocker phones and it's great, although it's annoying the purchase price has dropped quite a bit since I bought it in June. You need caller ID for it to work properly and I'll get that when I switch from BT later this month. I've even had spam/sales calls off BT themselves, although they did stop when I impolitely told them to!
 
I started reporting all the spam calls to Ofcom on their website. However, you have to give them your phone number and soon after I started to get lots of marketing spam phone calls as well. So it seems even Ofcom share your details with all and sundry.
 
The worse culprits are a single energy company that use 40-50 different numbers and lots of different company names to call you, so they're difficult to block. They are known spammers and have previously been reported as "unsavoury" characters. They have allegedly been in court on a number of occasions (or so it's reported on the internet). They phone nearly every day and often on more than one occasion. They now realise they can't get through to me during the day and so have started calling in the evening and weekends, even Sundays. On one occasion it was a person and not just a recorded message; I tried to tell them to stop calling me and take me off their list, but as soon as I started talking the individual on the other end of the phone was so rude he simply talked over me. They have been calling me regularly for a year now.
 
I've now set my phone to not even ring so I don't even hear the phone, everyone has to leave a message or get ignored. Auto callers can't leave messages because you have to press a key on the phone. Unfortunately it did mean I missed out on a cancelled hospital appointment though, because by the time I'd returned the call the cancelled appointment had been given to someone else. When my BT contract ends and I switch to another company in a few weeks I'll get caller ID and probably ask for a new phone number, Either way I'll be able to reset to phone to ring again and that'll allow me to answer numbers I want and block numbers I don't, so they can never phone me again. Unfortunately if I keep my present number the 'worse culprits' will just keep calling by setting up new phone numbers that I haven't yet blocked.
 
All that just because I need a phone line and the internet and people constantly pester me and try to sell me things I don't want.
