another typical tactic. Having read the posts on this comment, I do not see anyone condemning the man for being a Christian, the question raised is regarding how backgrounds were kept quiet, the reference was that had possibly been done as it may have an effect on how people voted.

When you can't get the better of a disagreement, you resort to ridicule and misdirection to make the opposite view look the weaker. You want to run for the SNP if AC gets turfed out:-)

"Pity your high moral standing doesn't extend to you putting in as much effort into picking up on the faults/mistruths of SNP reps."

The SNP supporters I have met do not seem to have just to much going for them in the way of "morals" either.
Seem to be a bit "short" in other areas as well..
I mean, who would want to vote for an old etonian, head of clan, on his third political party,  wannabee who, er, forgot(?) to advise the electorate of these facts...?

Just doesn't seem right to accuse AC of wrongdoing and, not make any similar kind of "fuss" over this little bit of "deception".
We wouldn't want to elect a man who so readily decieves the electorate would we?
Just what were the SNP afraid of?

Exactly, it's your opinion, so why do you insist in constantly packing down the throats of others and constantly trying to suggest that if we don't agree with your opinion then we must be willing to give our reps free reign to abuse their position is ridiculous.

I've not heard anyone either on here or on da street suggesting what he did was ok or condoning it in any way. Disappointment yes, but let's keep it in proportion he didn't take a back hander or hurt someone, he leaked a memo, which was later proved to be false.

So let's be honest, if it wasn't for the SNP desperately trying to conquer Scotland, this would have gone pretty much unnoticed, rightly or wrongly.

"It's also worth remembering a majority of 10,000 was reduced to 800 most of them SNP voters who are now the constituents of Alistair Carmichael, how do you think they feel about their representative?"

I didn't vote LD but I'd sure as hell prefer AC over SNP any day of the week.  How many of those SNP voters live in Shetland on a 'temporary' basis?
"Almost as unforgivable is the position of the party he represents, the Lib Dems are forever going on and on about high standards in office and listening to the people, yet when it came to the crunch, when it was one of their own, they backed a bent MP."

"bent MP"?  That term is usually associated with someone who has received a backhander; I don't believe AC fits into that category.

I've met AC twice since the election.  Compared to MPs I've met in the past, I was pleasantly surprised.  He works bloody hard for his constituents.  I hope he remains in office.

We all learn from our mistakes.I think that will have dawned on him now!

When the SNP members responsible for mistruths about cutting health spending etc stand down, I would then back the "witch hunt", sorry campaign, for Carmichael to stand down. What I can't stand is the double standards being displayed, which is nothing other then a hidden agenda by the SNP, who will stop at nothing to get their way. Nearly everyone I've spoken too feels this is the case.

No. Until something better comes along I would still vote for Carmichael before the SNP. At least he has had to come clean and will face the consequences of his actions. I would assume he will work very hard for us in future in order to rebuild trust. as for the SNP, well lied about European membership post independence, lied about cuts to health budgets, need I go on. Of course it'll be ok for the SNP to make "mistakments"

For the record I don't condone what Carmichael did, but I, like a lot of people put it into perspective.

Nothing has yet convinced me that Alastair should apply for the Stewardship of the Chiltern Hundreds and if you do not know what that means then go back to bed.  He may have made a somewhat silly comment but he is not the first and he will most certainly not me the last parliamentary candidate to do that.  As for the substantive issue of "did the First Minister express a preference for a Tory PM I frankly do not know nor care.  Suspect that if she did it was in jest.  And as for Danus Skene I think he deserves credit for fighting a good fight but in the end he lost.

To answer your question would mean they have to tell the truth, that this is more about trying to get the SNP candidate in, then it is about Carmichael's error.

It's this 'we'll stop at nothing to get our way' attitude that puts me off ever voting SNP, well that along with independence and double standards.

There is no doubt that what AC did was "wrong"(?) but, only in a very minor(?) way and, it is expected of ALL politicians that, at some point, they will indulge in a little ccreative(?) electioneering.

    BUT

    All the dingalings SNP supporters who are baying for his blood should ask themselves quite honestly (assuming that they are capable of honest self appraisal);

What would their position be if Skene had pulled a similar stunt and had actually won the seat ?
(ignoring the fact that he didn't tell the electorate that he was an "Old Etonian" or, that this was his third attempt to get into parliament and, that each attempt was under different "colours")

Would they then be demanding that he stepped down in the interests of their vision of "democracy"?

What would they then be saying if their vision of "democracy" was at odds with Skene's and he refused their request?

The reason I ask is that we have a badly broken(?) electoral system and, not one of the SNP lot has yet expressed any concern for the 4 million, or so, disenfranchised UKIP supporters, the 1.5 million, or so, disenfranchised Scottish Labour supporters, the disenfranchised Lib Dems, Greens et al.

In a "fair" system, all these groups would deserve recognition (seats) in accordance with their electoral support and, I would hazard a gues that it would remove the need for any "shenanigans"

Now your just putting words in my mouth. Where did I say I don't mind dishonesty? Of course I suppose it's all right for you to release a statement suggesting I don't mind dishonesty. now I hope you will hand in your resignation or shall I start a campaign. Double standards again.

ha ha bitter unionist ! Now you jump to conclusions. Just because I feel the "campaigning" is over the top and double standards are being displayed hardly sets me out as a "bitter unionist" as for starting a campaign, I would far rather devote my spare time to helping those who need it.
