A valid point, but there are perhaps two benefits that immediately come to mind. Firstly, it is quirky and provides a heritage and historical interest for tourists and local alike. Secondly, the signage, and of course mapping, that endure in Shetland do very often still bear only a resemblance to how many of the names are commonly pronounced, despite the Ordnance Survey's best efforts to eradicate the vernacular. Perhaps rather than the Norse names the signage should have the phonetic names most commonly used.

I heard it too, and I think a fairer translation would be to say if the pre-arranged first year financial support previously agreed by the CT was not approved by the CT trustees now that it was required, there would be outrage amongst the other funders, which makes a bit more sense, despite this request being made quite early.

Thanks Dagfinn, Yes, I suppose we can live in hope that someone spots the trace of a post hole while digging their garden on the ridge between Upper Scalloway and Blacksness, but it is pretty unlikely.

That's right, if I understand it correctly. The simple answer is "No". And it might be "cølin".

Random Questions - What I'd like to know is ......?

Here's a geeky one for you then: On BBC radio, as the time signals sound, on the hour, there's a faint high pitched whistle that wobbles in accompaniment along with them. It's always been there on VHF. What causes it, is it a deliberate part of the time signal, or just interference that forms around the beeps? -

Nah, we deleted a spammer - he was, perhaps excessively , highlighting their motives.

mhutch, please read the post above your one. Thanks. Any further 'rumour' posts, and possibly the last ones will be deleted.

Try Facebook, plenty of first hand accounts on there. Shetlink can wait until it's a genuine news story, and even then, it may be invasive to discuss whatever it was about.

As there have been several replies to sharney's post already and it is fairly non-specific it is maybe not worth deleting, but we would ask that users refrain from posting unsubstantiated rumour. Thanks.

^ Well said Amy, and completely correct. We have a whole forum section for discussing the use of, and influences in, language around here. Please leave this thread for Word of the Day, thanks.

True^ and GR's sentiment also assumes that people will be totally incapable of having a holiday in bad weather, which I'm sorry to say isn't strictly true. There are, believe it or not, people who come here that appreciate our unique form of climate, winter or summer, and don't 'never again' it even when experiencing it at its mediocre drudgery worst. There are those who actually seek the extremes, so I won't mention them. And number 12: http://www.independent.co.uk/travel/100-things-to-do-before-you-die-912856.html?action=Gallery&ino=12 The pony may have one trick, but people do cross continents to see it.

It is interesting then that the only Viking age archaeology in Scalloway as far as I know is the fish bones and 'some artefacts' found at Upper Scalloway when they were excavating the broch. It seems highly unlikely that the Vikings would have referred to the broch as a hall, or suchlike, and it is recorded/theorised that the broch was further demolished at the time of Viking presence in the area and so perhaps a significant Viking structure either lurks undiscovered, or has been flensed in the building of an existing dwelling. Edit - And, of course, there may have been huts and a hall.
-
Ever one to question the mainstream: On the sign for Scalloway it has the Norse original name of Skalavagr written below, and the definition is said to be 'bay of the huts' and I would presume this would break down into skala vagr meaning "____ voe" Now, having the kind of annoying cross referencing mind that I am cursed with, I cannot help but recall that the SIC motto is: Með lögum skal land byggja - "with laws shall land built" Can I confirm from any of our learned etymologists that there is no connection between these two uses of a word "skal" and can I also ask if anyone has an opinion on the 'bay of huts' definition of Skalavagr, as I recently came across an alternative suggested description 'bay of the hall'. Thanks.

Do you really want posters to start discussing you individually rather than the subject at hand? This question may be ill-advised in a forum where we often strive to avoid personal attack and invasions of privacy. However if you really wish to sustain the question, please be aware of the limitations of moderation.
