  1. In response to a conversation I was party to yesterday: It seems amazing that you can buy exotic spices from around the world, to suit world tastes you might say, but you cannot buy Bisto powder or ham stock cubes in Tesco. How cosmopolitan. I was in the Tesco last week for a nosy, walked in for one item and walked out with three bags full. I was totally under-whelmed by the pokey new section, and the shop in general. It succeeded in extracting money from me though, to be fair. I'd only been in a couple of times previously and then only in and out for items near the door. Was also disappointed to find that they did not have the excellent rechargeable batteries they used to stock, they had every other size, and the ones I wanted packaged with a charger -but not the simple pack of batteries only, and I have a charger already TYVM. Amazing what they do stock, odd what they don't.
  2. Well, here's your wish icepick. This thread will be locked if there are any further contraventions of the T&Cs. Simples. Happy?
  3. 85 planes and they all missed Lerrick? Standards are seriously slipping in the armed forces.
  4. Very true and quite right. Similarly, being on both sides of this debate also: For every so many crofters that will jump up and down and argue that it is right to shoot the birds that jeopardise their livestock, they should also bear in mind that there are, have been and always will be a nutter who will shoot anything that moves, and who take pleasure in doing so. For example, I recall the deck of a local fishing boat that was covered stem to stern in 12-bore cartridges as the young crew had taken a notion to scorie-pigeon shooting, ie shooting everything that came in the air around them. Being on a working fishing boat, this probably amounted to hundreds, and all just for fun for a young crew without any regard for wildlife. Not so long ago either. It does go on and no crofter, nor fisherman, could defend that.
  5. Dat question poses me a quandry GR. I have nae desire to get envagled in this debate as I am firmly on both sides of it. However, for what it's worth, I walked past the banks broo midden of a farm in the south mainland recently to find 6 blackbacks dumped therein. I can reasonably assume that they were culprits and, if onything, I was blyde tae seem them gathered up and dumped rather than left lying, and I widna say there was any attempt to conceal them. I took interest that there was only twa rabbits in the same midden. Maybe they were bait? Edit - back in the day an ignorant bairn might have shot a shalder fae no kenning ony better, but there's no muckle o dat goes on noo.
  6. This appealed to me, one or two crackers among them: Surreal Sports. Edit- Just noticed that parody from Twerto, up there a bit. Brilliantly done, very funny!
  7. Anybody ken anybody in South Whiteness? I came across a lamb lying next to the carcass of a yowe at the wast banks of South whiteness recently. Windered if anybody realised the yowe had croaked it. They seemed to be the only two in the peerie park they were in. Kinda odd. Lamb was hiding under a peerie brew. Eases my conscience now that I've telt somebody.
  8. Better for Shetland than the oil era? Hmm. For a speculative point. If Tesco succeeded in replacing all the local shops, would people be happy with the selection of goods available, particularly hardware and white goods?
  9. If people thought more about why we might lock a thread before we locked it rather than afterward, we wouldn't have to lock any threads. It's not us, it's you (selectively).
  10. You could also rule out a driver problem by updating the monitor, and/or graphic cards driver software. A friend of mine had a similar problem with a very old LCD monitor which refused to operate reasonably on his PC, but when replaced and plugged into a different operating system ran fine for a couple of years. Try the drivers first before binning it. Also try it on another PC for reference if possible, just to get an idea what's going on.
  11. Thanks Spinner. I feel like I was lazy now. Meh.

    Tarpaulin?

Flimsy tarps are surprisingly cheap and readily available in Lerwick^^as above. Cut one or fold it. Easy-peasy. edit -- If you opted to fold a full size flimsy tarp rather than cut it - tape up the edges with duck tape to save hassle. Keeping it full size would of course depend on what you are planning. If it's a bit of simple camping then fine, but if you are hiking pan-Himalayas, then cutting it down would be better (taping the cut edges would be smart too, and then use a proper punch to make holes for pegs in double taped edges if required. )
  14. I don't have one, I'm not sure yet whether to get one, but: The yellow discolouration seems to be a very limited manufacturing fault - from well over half a million shipped for the release day. They'll be replaced. The antenna fault seems to be either restricted to low signal areas, or a software fault. It seems to be cured by using a cover - but many a reporting no problem with it in the first place so I'm not sure what to make of it. The limited multi-tasking is a deliberate move for better battery life, apparently, so a positive thing. If you are not constantly awaiting background Facebook updates, as a prime example, there should be no problem. Facebook will carry on as before, it just won't be allowed to hog system resources constantly checking for updates, between being viewed itself. The SDK for apps is free and uses pretty much VB for programming - so not reeeaallly much of a restriction, more of a refinement. Aaaand the long lasting shiny-ness is due to helicopter-windscreen grade plexiglass type stuff. Just sayin..... Still not sure whether to get one... I'll wait until the excitement has passed and then check the forums again.
  15. Ah! Of course, Zetland, not Shetland. No wonder I drew a blank. Much appreciated.
  16. Thanks Brian. I strayed into the divergent history, rather than parallel or shared then. Is there any comparable situation for Shetland? Are we without earl in the UK?
  17. And also, eg: http://www.seaprobeatlantis.com/ Chu-ching, if left alone. Not an option if all that can be found are floating corpses.
  18. Highly subjective, but sufficiently curmudgeonly as to be amiable, rather than xenophobic. I'm guessing one for the hotels you refer to was the Meadowvale - site of one of the finest fish dishes I ever ate at a young age, being a fussy brat and not generally liking fish at that early stage. It was a fine establishment. Perhaps if the selkies drew in mair touries I could have repeated that experience in adult life. Edit - There were very few touries whaur I grew up, and most of those that were around were kent and liked. Double edit - One of my other fond early childhood memroies was of watching three selkies playing tag with an peat bag from the banks of the geo on Colsay. That's when I realised they were nae idder as swimming dogs and as such I have regarded their continued wasteful slaughter in all it's forms with disdain.
  19. A whole other debate? What like sea troot nets are harmless and fun? Caan whales up da voes is essential for the gains from them? Like mackerel are a dirty fish and not for eating and like monkfish are godless ugly and only fir bellin back? Time moves on. Trends change. Income is welcome, wherever the pocket it comes from originated. That's not new, and if people want to come here and look at selkies, to ignore that income is the essence of a spoilt community, grown fat on the profits of the sub-sea bed. The biggest problem with the seal control issue you'd advocate as it stands is that, for instance, in the realm of salmon farming it is like rabbit control. You could shoot every rabbit you see, every day, forever, and there will still be more to replace them when the sun comes up in the morning again. However, to contradict myself slightly, Common seals are not common anymore and like the whales before them are protected for a reason. Killing something you are not going to eat, skin or process for fodder is just a pointless waste. Our forefathers knew that and would not have wasted the ammo. If left alone, the seal numbers would be equalised and regulated by the killer whales. If you keep removing the food source, the whales will stay offshore and the most efficient, practical deterrent for seals inshore will remain intermittent. I doot.
  20. Is it not illegal GR? That has nothing to do with appeasing the touries. Edit - and as fro tradition, Shetland has served as a welcoming hub for the whole vest norden and deep sea fleets for centuries. Even when shooting seals was the occupation of small boys and perfectly legal.
  21. No relevant points to make then. Didn't think so. Please return to the discussion when you do. Thanks.
  22. A good point. Around here we should be flying English, Scottish, Welsh Shetland, Norwegian, Faroese, New Zealand, Australian and any other potentially welcoming flags at this time of year. Particularly during the Hamefarin.
  23. ^Lie. Please attempt to focus on the relevant issues rather than diverge into pseudo-relevant bickering.
