  1. I reckon that if they had stuck Shetland Flag day at a time of year with much less going on then people would be more likely to engage with it. Sticking it at midsummers was perhaps a promotional mistake. A flag day should be a time to be proud of your identity or location and the busiest social weekend of the year(alongside UHA), with the most visitors present, is not exactly ideal for this. People would, I'd imagine, be happy to wave and raise flags for this weekend anyway, without designating it as Flag day. Stick it in September of when there's nowt else on.
  2. I ken du's on the wind-up AR, but statistically, is there a shortage of sillocks? And are their otoliths evident in selkie spoor to prove any connection? How many folk eat them? Do landed piltocks not all get shipped to Spain anyway? If that were the case, by your logic, the selkies are depriving the Spanish, who are robbing our seas of all the other deep water species.
  3. Do you know, Brian, if it is correct that Oliver St John, Viscount Kirkwall is the earl of Orkney, and does this still apply to Shetland too? Thanks in advance.
  4. Just to mix things up a bit more. It would seem that that there may be subtle differences in a Norwegian earldom and the extrapolated Scots equivalent, which is interesting, (differences too subtle for me to write confidently about at this ungodly hour). Secondly, reign over Orkney (and Shetland) seems to have gone from earldom to dukedom and back again, which is interesting too. Thirdly, and most interestingly, the current heir apparent earl is Oliver St John, Viscount Kirkwall. Now if he succeeded in asserting a Norwegian earldom, drawing from the continued application of Udal law to aspects of governance in the northern isles, then we might just have our new boss.
  5. Time out! That, Mr Gibber is tending toward over-reaction, surely? Can we just move on and get back on topic - EM, that means you too. It is not, hopefully, a competition to see who can be the most obstinate in their pedantry around the definition of one word. Drop the word and move on. Thanks.
  6. ^^ Thanks Ghostrider. A correct assumption. As was said to me, it was a sloping wall for a reason. NorthernXposure -I raised the point as it was the concern of a boat owner in the habit of using the small boat harbour and apprehensive about the new design, so not hearsay really, more of a a direct relay. I could name him but that would be inappropriate, you understand.
  7. There is also no hope of a sensible solution from anyone so factually wrong about the separate habits of our two distinct native seal species. You'd think someone with 1000 years of Shetland knowledge would ken what seals got up tae. Maybe that knowledge has been corrupted in some way, by outside influences. I don't know. Anyway, there's no chance of clubbing a young common seal, for the record. They can swim from birth and are immediately taught to flee from humans. I could say more , but I'd be wasting my time wouldn't I?
  8. Any more info? I heard tell that the new vertical concrete wall in the small boat harbour was likely to cause havoc and damage to yachts, unlike the old sloped harbour wall which dissipated wave energy and reduced clapotis. Were these boats in the small boat harbour?
  9. Cue my favourite test story. They tell of a guy fae whalsa that was coming to the mainland to take his test and the boys on the ferry asked him about the various exercises that the test is comprised of, which went fine until they mentioned the 3 point turn, to find that he was pretty unsure about that maneouvre. So, in the clear deck space they taught him how to do the turn and, thanking them for their input, he carried on down the road with passed driver to meet the examiner. Unfortunately he failed. What for? Steering with his knees while cleaning his glasses. True story.
  10. Shetland is more than capable of streaming high quality media down the road right now. Even more so once the fiber lands. Very true - HD Video conferencing is part of the infrastructure already, for instance.
  11. http://www.pickaquoy.net/ Except we already have a huuuge subsidised leisure centre we nae cinema in it, presumably also 'decided on' by people who ken nothing about Shetland - christ, dey even biggit an extension on it for carpet bowling? What were they thinking? [/sarcasm] I towt da decision on funding it was made by councillors (and external funders), but den, maybe du meant dat dey ken nithin aboot the Shaetland eyder?
  12. viable - a word of many uses. Once you have the above formula (and a skip load of cynicism), it's possible to work any plan into it - as these things tend to go.
  13. It's almost frightening that no-one has resurrected this thread, with the Services meeting only two days away. This could be the introductory death knell for rural education in Shetland as we know it, if the Education Departments contrived options are accepted on face value. Click here for the Stage 3 consultation list of options
  14. Out of interest: Scottish Gov doc on fishing rights. http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Topics/marine/Salmon-Trout-Coarse/17519/8903
  15. I've moved this thread out of the Shetland News section, as I see no reference to any Shetland News within it. Though the subject may make sense when in possession of all the facts, could you elucidate bresail whether you mean this to be a general discussion, or if it refers to a specific issue in the forum or elsewhere. Please pm me or another mod if the latter applies and if you so wish. Thanks.
  16. Assuming? AT, you would be the first to jump on someone else "assuming" anything. Liverpool bay actually boasts average wind speeds of 30mph, according to this source: http://www.powermag.com/renewables/wind/Burbo-Bank-Offshore-Wind-Farm-Liverpool-Bay-UK_227_p2.html Which is pretty good, in the greater scheme of things, don't you think? Is Shetland's average not around Force 5 (18-24mph)?
  17. Sometimes it is known as "spam", sometimes it is known as "chopped ham and pork", I think we would be right in calling your shameless plug the latter. Congratulations!
  18. Can we keep this thread about the windfarm directly and discuss global warming on the global warming thread. PLeeeeease.
  19. You are right GR, I think it should be apparent to anyone reading the last few posts of the thread that it had descended into a petty name calling brawl, and such discussions have no place on Shetlink, unless in fun and understood as such. We have closed a fair few threads over the past four years for just that reason. The reason the thread was left open up to that point was for the very reason that, however meagre the new content appearing here( much weaker than the actual stories that prompted the new discussion manifested themselves in the paper and particularly on the radio), it was once again a current affair. zetlander. The whole world loves a conspiracy theory, but the only authorities that act over Shetlink are our considered discretion, our own terms and conditions and the law. Anyway, if anyone ever wants to question or discusss a mod decision, please contact a mod rather than discussing it in a thread. Thanks.
  20. [***Mod edit - thread split and merged***] That's quite a strange sentiment to follow such an excellent gig with but: It widna be held at Mareel, Clickimin will remain the venue for the big gigs.
  21. Whit? Surely this is a new and different subject? Anybody care to enlighten me and tell me if this is worth splitting the thread for? Thanks
