  1. I just love the thought that the trucker was unaware he had a Clio stuck to his bumper. Driving along, sipping his coffee, thumbing through a magazine, singing along to lady Gaga on the radio at 55mph. You can't beat a bit of real horsepower.
  2. You could argue the same over building an ice cream factory on the island in Girlsta Loch, but that also would have nothing to do with the windfarm.
  3. ^^ DePooperit, I'm trying tae coax him intae da online Shetland Dicitonary, (and/or here) but hit's no aesy. Diss aalie lambs, wir dey being fattened up fir first aetin den or whit do dey mean we 'settin on'?
  4. ^ In da sam likly o what GT is sayin, da Shetland Dictionary is excellent and a very valuable reference book, but tae een o my auld seniors hit is regarded as a record o "Tingwall wirds" and he continues tae add ees ane eens tae it fae sooth ower as time geens on.
  5. Dare I observe that you are not comparing like with like AT. And, of course there's a clear difference between damage to the very lochs that these fish have evolved to live in and any anglers vain attempts to empty them by line. However, you are asking for evidence of something that has yet to happen, (an impossible conundrum), but you should be aware that it was SEPA who officially flagged the potential problem with the lochs. But this has been discussed previously in the thread, I think..
  6. Very much lik draatsin, whaur da name draatsie comes fae. Draatsin alang.
  7. One of the glee songs- "Just a city boy..." etc. I saw the video by accident a week or so back and noo it keeps creepin intae me head. Probably due in no small part tae yun lass lookin surprisingly hotter when she's singin it. No dat I've ever watched an episode, of course. Its truly a curse!
  8. While dey ir sae muckle interesting spaekin gyaan on in diss section o da forums, twa wirds at spring tae mind at I ay winder aboot. Blett, blaet, blitt - for shy or reserved, whaurs dat fae? Flite, flycht(?) for scold or chastise, whaurs hit fae?
  9. @ Ally, a response: HT was on last night too! Unfortunately too late to watch it all.
  10. In reply, I will say nothing, but it will take me at least twenty-four words to say so. As is sometimes the case
  11. I can't find it.... Hmm, I can remember it well though, might have been part of a longer discussion. Another great feature of the support group, you can sit on your jacksy at home and still attend meetings.
  12. You are not the first and you'll not be the last. In fact I think we had a "Shetlinkers' Anonymous" type thread a while back. It's alright though, the addiction is being part of the support group, if you see what I mean. This is why we need more lightsome threads again, otherwise we all suffer from politically inclined information overload. I'll see if I can find that thread.....
  13. Given the level of discussion over Brian's minimal posts when he makes them, I think it would be fair to say he has contributed. Just think of it as a Zen commentary, not so much what he has said, but more about what he has not said, less is more, the value of silence.
  14. Lets just call a "Time-out" on this shall we? If it is WCS posting for himself then they will accept responsibility for the consequences of what they have posted. If it is not, we'll soon hear about it and act accordingly. We would request that any further posts on the subject are made with due consideration. Or, of course, they'll be moderated. Thanks.
  15. Just for balance then: Stumbled upon that today.
  16. Kinda lik diss: http://www.dsl.ac.uk/ Try hayin a skoit fir NEUGLE athin hit for a guid example o da variants and dir origins. Or ony idder wird of coorse, yun's joost da first een at sprang tae mind tae illustrate hit
  17. Splendid galley head! Might well be tempted to take a run down after seeing that. I'd also have to admit a strong curiosity as to whether a galley without a pontoon can remain upright when full of torches and in the water. I've heard discussion of ballast or not to ballast, not sure what the official line is. Hope it works either way. May be the start of a new trend in unsupported galleys, who knows.
  18. Should 'fight' not read 'discuss'. I haven't been aware of any co-ordinated democratic assaults originating from Shetlink. Unless there is a PM resistance movement in operation.
  19. There are a number of significant tidal rips around the Shetland coast, some quite manageable but others best avoided in any small vessel. The flow directions are all marked on standard charts. Mostly straightforward but there are some that might confuse due to local eddys and the like. Why not get in touch with the local club, they would know these things from a kayaking point of view I'd imagine. http://www.shetland-communities.org.uk/scanoeclub/ http://www.shetlandcanoeclub.co.uk
  20. @ Landrover: There is no law against shooting them at any time of year. The idea of leaving them be in Feb, March and April was because they were either full of young or milk. The cold winter tis year has wiped out a lot of them, it would seem.
  21. There are old recipes in existence for every living thing edible around here, from seaweed to shags to sheep, but those who have them are the least likely to be corresponding on the interweb, unfortunately. I've seen them eence or twice. For shellfish like mussels and oysters I rarely go further than steaming them open (microwave is ideal) and dipping them in a mix of sesame oil, dark soy and olive oil. Might work for cockles too. V v good. : All locally produced, of course
  22. Blimey! What are the chances. Nope, don't know you, but good on ya.
  23. We get accustomed to what we have and, dare I say, spoilt I found out the other day from someone I know sooth that their local primary school has no class-room assistants and only one additional support teacher for the whole school, who was solely there to assist one kid with a physical disability. Now, I get confused which is which with the titling of those who provide extra help in schools, but the up-shot was that any kids with learning difficulties of any kind only received extra help when the support teacher was not assisting the child with the physical disability, ie dyslexics, ADD, Asbergers etc. How does that compare with educational provision up here, for instance? We do have it pretty good, relatively speaking
  24. And then it becomes a term used only amongst Shetlanders and as such takes more of a negative connotation than if widely used. It's usage would probably be more light-some if more people took the 'banter' element of its usage in retorts such as "I'm not a sooth-moother, I'm a Yorkshireman" or similar, but those who resent the term tend to answer along the lines of "How dare you call me a soothmoother, that's offensive" where it need not be. Any descriptive word can be both offensive and non-offensive depending on context and tone, of course.
  25. Norn, as I have been informed on similar discussions before is dead in Shetland. The linguistic artefacts and legacy are still quite evident though. It is just the distinct Shetlnd language that is gone. The Shetland language, or dialect is very important to those brought up with it. It is a very strong influence on the Shetland identity, it is a source of pride to many and creates an affinity to our neighbours in the West Norden. Tourists are invariably informed about Shetland's scandinavian heritage, especially through the dialect, viking heritage, fire festivals and certain archaeological sites. Last one is tricky. Many people do associate very strongly with Scandinavia, but centuries of Scottish rule have purged much of the heritage. It is not so long since teachers and ministers ridiculed their audiences if they chose to speak in Shetland language. Children were scolded or even punished for doing so by them. Apparently. Have a look through some of the other threads in this section. There's a lot written about it all here.
