Anyone else ever have a Vodafone email account? I thought mine had gone a bit quiet, and then discovered today that it had been discontinued without any notice. I didn't use it for anything of great significance, but did use it to get text notification on certain emails. Apparently it has been superseded by Vodafone 360, for which you had to register before a date in June this year, otherwise you can't get access to the services. Any other services give text alerts of incoming emails? Or should I just accept the requirement to carry a huge, fragile, email friendly smartphone nowadays?

I'm afraid you'll have to be more specific neb. From what direction and of what level? Compared to the tsunami's that have hit in the past? Or if you mean a really big tsunami, like from a large meteor strike: ±23,000.

I've been up there in the dark in recent years. Nothing particularly scary happened but the two ravens that were roosting there flying away, and then returning, in the moonlight were pretty spectacular. I'd strongly advise against going inside, not for spooky reasons, but the remaining structure is all pretty unstable. I'd also watch out for cows in the field below it, if they are there this year. You don't want to accidentally get on the wrong side of a cow.

Each to their own SP, each to to their own. I don't think the debate between yourself and scoots should be dragged into aspersions on maturity. Please try to avoid using "ad hominem" debating tactics. Thanks

Can we just divert this discussion back on topic. Alleged Hacker etc. Thanks. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424053111903520204576481593577026366.html Wall Street Journal, no less. According to Google there are 952 related news articles on this now.

Would you pay for a Concert if the Singers were miming?
Njugle replied to unstman100's topic in TV, Film, Arts and Literature
Its an added controversy when speaking about Bjorn Again because they are pretending to be another band, and using fake Swedish accents. The crowd seemed to enjoy it however. The clear evidence that they weren't miming the vocals, or all of them, was the occasional minor drift off key. The whole fake/real debate gets all the ore complicated when discussing cover bands. If I'd paid to see a cover band who purely mimed I'd be severely miffed. On the other hand I've been to see various electronic acts who have used almost entirely pre-sequenced backing with vocals and maybe guitars on top. In debating terms that's expensive karaoke! And I'd pay for it again. -
Shetlink users are reminded that personal attacks and inflammatory postings are disallowed under the T&Cs. Thanks.

I totally agree with that and have thought that for years! Well said. I don't mind if they want to make a point, but how hard would it be to make up a simple oval template and spray it evenly? Rather than deface every sign on the isles with mindless vandalism, that few, if any, tourists would actually understand the implications of, and the rest of us have to look at each time we pass. Grrrr!

The Scalloway surgery has for a long time operated above the minimum statutory requirement of service, and has an excellent track record on waiting times in general. The reduced income is said by them, and their disclosed figures, to mean the reduction of one doctor (or equivalent) plus some of the additional services. A pharmacy would be great, but only if the level of care remained as it is, was not reduced to the statutory minimum and patients could still collect prescriptions on site. The pharmacy board ain't going to let that happen. For a parent with sick children, or the elderly or infirm, it is a significant journey to add to walk to the Main Street, or find somewhere nearby to park, to collect a script. It should not be forgotten in this that the health board held a public consultation, which drew an unprecedented response from the community in favour of considering both application concurrently. It was the first such consultation on this issue, but the Health Board reps insisted that they had to rely on "Custom and Practice" and consider only the first received. It has never been easy to understand how they applied "custom and practice" to something that had never been done like this before. The word "consultation" has truly been sullied in recent times.

Alba Endeavour arrived Scalloway at 1.30pm, Swan has just arrived at 6pm.

Using the comparison about free-ranging happy whales having a good life before the slaughter is fine Kavi, but even some of us hardened carnivores would find it distasteful to see a field of cows slaughtered by the same method and then see calfs spill out of the guts when a cow is hung on the slaughterman's hook. Unless the Sea Shepherd folk have done some really clever photo-editing it would seem to be that some of the whales are in calf when slaughtered. That adds a bit to the practical inefficiency of that particular tradition.

Y'know, as soon as i posted that I thought, it's probably something about man's reign of death, tyranny etc.

On closer inspection it's not bones, but a trident and a crook, which is almost a clever logo, if they could explain the skull.

Anybody Else having any problems?

That's right, thanks GypsyScy. It may well be that our omniscient Admin has been somewhat absent. He's a busy character, not unlike the banker on Deal or No Deal. -
Lopping off a tree branch?
Njugle replied to nortien's topic in Agriculture / Self Sufficiency / Gardening / Pets
I've also always been led to believe that branch trimming is really best done in the winter months, while the tree is dormant. As for the paste, I've trimmed a lot of sycamore branches and never ttreated with anything and the trees have been consistently fine. The other things I would add though is that tree branches are a lot heavier than they look. Always try to remain above the branch while cutting if possible and especially beware the hinge effect of a cut. The outer end will drop and the branch will pivot back towards the cut end/you as a result. They never fall straight down. When this hinge effect takes place you can end up with the branch landing on your ladder/feet very quickly and bear in mind it's the heavy end that will do so. I tend to cut part way and then finish off pulling bigger/awkward branches down by rope from a safe distance. If using a proper safety harness and a leash on tools this would not be so necessary. (1 1/2 inch branch shouldn't be too much bother though ) -

@GR, It's a shot in the dark, but it may be a power change in your landline for unknown reasons. As well as the mobile networks being flakey recently, the landlines have been a bit crackly at times. It could be that, in the period you were testing, there was a drop in power that affected your cordless setup but wouldn't affect a simple direct handset. It would need to be pretty drastic because most domestic signals can hold at lest three handsets before the wired signal starts to deteriorate, but you never know. If they were working on an exchange they may have powered down lines temporarily. Or it could be mice, gnawing merrily through a couple of the strands.

A small minority of our current incumbents seem to feel it acceptable to defend themselves and their actions by attacking anyone that questions them, either in a loud vocal manner, or publicly in the media, rather than retaining dignity and decorum through a reasoned defence. To my mind it's a new (to Shetland) form of public representation that could perhaps be best described as "tabloid politics", to coin a phrase. It's quite sickening really and undoubtedly being monitored from afar, where the impression formed is an injustice to those who behave in a manner befitting the role. Put two or three barky dogs in a kennel and people outside will think ill of kennels, not the individual dogs.

The other rule for beak-free breakfast involved the number of eggs in the nest. I'll say no more.

I don't think you are joking splatter, I think you are potentially defaming a local business unless you could substantiate that accusation. Any evidence, or care to put a name to it? The Shetlink T&Cs disallow defamation, so if you can't provide more info we'll have to delete the comment. Them's the rules.

I also believe this is perhaps invasive of someones privacy, so we'll just put the subject on ice.

Annoying but trivial things - Room 101 stuff
Njugle replied to peeriebryan's topic in Anything & Everything Else
You know, since digital TV came in, it increasingly annoys me that TVs don't all display programmes at the same rate, meaning that if there is the same programme on in two rooms in the house, you get a fairly dramatic and surreal echo effect. Utterly trivial, but increasingly annoying. -

Speaking of events for visitors, has anything been laid on for the yacht race crews currently in Lerwick? I was reliably told today that this was the 25th year of them coming and many of them had encouraged wives and family to come too, because it is usually an extravaganza, and believed to be more so in its anniversary and then.........nothing. No marquees, no bands. Nowt. Resources had all been diverted to the Tall Ships. Is this true?
