  1. I, like many other young lasses, wanted to be a nurse and I remember being truly horrified and slightly disbelieving when my Mum told me that I would have to see blood and work with people who were bleeding. My little bro wanted to be a "farmer-tractor-driver". Imagine typing that one into s1jobs.
  2. I remember reading an article about hangover cures once. It separated genuine aids (as nothing could actually 'cure' a hangover) from urban myths, it would be helpful if I could remember the actual remedies..... I am sure sleep was the best thing - kinda difficult at work right enough unless your one of the talented peole that can sleep upright and with their eyes open - spookiest thing I have ever seen a human doing ...... hmmmm perhaps that could be an entirely new thread
  3. Vailron, now is your chance to say what you feel about the case. Do you agree with the possible deportation of Sackchai himself and others in his position? If so, why and if not, why not?
  4. I just want to clarify that my post from which the above quote has been taken is not a reflection on how I personally feel about the cause and I'm sorry if that was not made clear. I, personally, agree with the vast majority of posters on this thread. Howerver, I am willing to listen to the views and opinions of others who maybe don't, with the same respect as I hope they would listen to mine. This is a really interesting and complicated subject to debate (in a local and natioanl context) and I just think that people with differing opinions should respectfully be able to contribute to this debate. I don't think there is anyone claiming they are being picked on but perhaps the seams of the resentment you (Ally) mention could be picked at to get a real debate going and perhaps find out if these people really are sceptics as Jonners suggests, or something else. Now, is Sackchai's case possibly part of a knee-jerk reaction by the Labour Government to win back support in the light of the rising support in certain constituencies of the British National Party?? Any thoughts??
  5. I am getting a little confused when reading these posts, I thought it was a debate thread on a discussion forum?? There does seem to be a few cases where comments are being dismissed as they are appearing not to be in favour of the 'debated' cause. It is very easy to become defensive over comments that conflict with ideas you feel passionately about but to belittle or undermine (for want of better words) someone for there passions or ideas lying elsewhere and being different to yours isn't what I thought a debate was. Surely everyone's opinion is rightly theirs and they have the freedom of speech to express it, whether or not you like it and this is afterall a democratic country we live in....?? And while there are comments on this thread I don't necessarily agree with, I do try to remember that it is a 'debate' thread and in every debate there are differing and opposing sides. As Tartanlass quotes at the end of her posts "Treat others like you'd like to be treated yourself".
  6. Ok, you asked for them...!!.... Four Weddings and a Funeral Dirty Dancing (that ass....and the only film PS can be called attractive in) Grease (1) Hope Floats My name is Joe (not so much chick-flicky but tear-jerking all the same) Stand By Me (as above) Love Actually This Year's Love How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days (for Matthew McConaughey and his Southern Drawl alone!) Another I forgot to add to the other list was The Station Agent
  7. In no particular order; Batteries Not Inlcuded Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid Small Faces LA Confidential Empire Records The Goonies I also have a few other faves but fear the strong chick-flicky nature of them will have some of you wretching in disbelief! I will therfore protect my dignity for now!
  8. I know the ones you mean...... they are so into what they are doing that anyone not as all singing, all dancing about it as they are, swish their hair or guffaw in complete disgust at you..... oh the shame! There is also another variation to this type, when they get so absorbed by their 'role' that they can't see the wood for the trees and lose all sense of positivity and nit pick over small, irrelevant details. Grrr......can you tell I have a few specific examples in mind?
  9. Let's hear your top 30 (at the moment) then McFly..... "Rumours" - Fleetwood Mac "Harvest" or indeed "Harvest Moon" - Neil Young "Stanley Road" - Paul Weller "Baduism" - Erykah Badu They would need to feature somewherwe among my top 10.... no wait, maybe top 20... oooooh I don't know this is too damn hard...... next (and easier) question please.....!!
  10. You probably are right but I am sure there is a connection to Fetlar somehow...maybe the guy who chained the bear was from Fetlar or perhaps even the person who told me the story was from Fetlar..... who knows!!
  11. ^Me, not logged in. Cheers.
  12. Looks like Unst is nor gonna be a place where "streams of whiskey are flowing"
  13. I heard that story too but it wasn't a njugle in tingwall - it was a bear in Fetlar!!! True, I swear!! That I was told that story I mean, not if it actually was true!
  14. Ah yes, I wasn't imagining things afterall. I have no idea who this Cinderella crowd are - can anyone shed any light?
  15. "don't know what you've got till it's gone" Is that not a Joni Mitchell number.............. or am I thinking of something totally different???
  16. The new venue will enable there to be events on most evenings. The Garrison (in my opinion) can't cater for as diverse a range of events that a new venue could. Take the Absolute Swing concerts that were on at the end of March - they were great, I went along to one and had a really good night - but there was something missing. I don't know, maybe it was that I struggled to clap along to the music as the elbows of the folk either side of me were touching and I couldn't move. Maybe it was the lack of 'jazz and swing' type atmosphere of the place, again not helped by the rigid, cluastraphobic seating arrangement. The Garrison was the most suitable place for these nights but it wasn't adequate for the type of event that it could and should have been. There are plenty of events that the Garrison could be suitable for but, there are a whole lot more that a new CMV could cater for. If there is nowhere suitable for an event to be held then this may be putting some folk off holding an event. (That is just a theory not a rock solid claim) The venue, from what I can understand, is to enhance (some) existing events and to generate more by providing a multi-purpose culture base to give Shetland Culture space to progress...... How can this be a bad thing? Shetland Culture is constantly growing and changing so why does it not deserve a place where it can do so on a scale that meets its needs?
  17. I went up once and that was enough..... I remember there being a lot of bed pans and dusty old medical looking stuff. Eughh ... gies me the shudders just thinking about it. Noises that distinctly sounded like a girl crying were often heard coming from one of the rooms along the corrider leading to the manager's hoose.
  18. Speaking about the old side pf the JC Hostel, has anyone been in the tower bit accessible through the top floor (we weren't allowed up but it was too tempting to resist!)......?? Creepy place. Apparently the hostel was used as a hospital during one of the Wars and the old study room in the basement was the morgue.......
  19. The wee Greek place, Konaki, on Sauchiehall st, Glasgow, does good food but in a relaxed and casual atmosphere. I would def recommend it. Another good place is Bar Soba in Mitchell Lane as is the place that is upstairs in Princes Square that I can't remember the name of...... to the right of Ming's and last or second last on the row along!!!
  20. The State Bar in Glasgow (just around the corner from Firewater) is an excellent pub - its a bit like Cheers - where everybody knows your name!
