  1. cant do that max travel to school time would stop it. would you want your 4 year old being away from you with the risk of the ferry not sailing
  2. would not call 1 1/2 days education as enough. thought they had a commitment to retain schools on the isles. if we kept kids off for 3 1/2 days the council would prosecute us. good on the folks from shropshire moving rhere. but i wonder do they know how isolated it will be. if they fudge there duty there then whats stopping them doing it else were. personally i would not want to be there with young children without near emergency help. no other kids to mix with either. would it not be cheaper to depopulate papa and pay compo to the moved folks. 13 is not sustainable.
  3. did he really claim that. from my kids experience it falls well behind both brae and aith in both teaching and pupil support. even the english schools that they were at 8 years ago were more interested and supportive. my 16 year old son has learning problems. he did well at aith and was happy. he managed a few weeks at the anderson and walked out. we were really impressed that the school could not be even bothered to let us know what he did. hopefully we have got an alternative sorted for him. HOWEVER THE ANDERSON IS NOT THAT GOOD. they think they are a big school but even my smsll secondary school of 33 years ago taught better and made an effort.
  4. son had to change bus 3 times on the anderson to bixter route. lots of complaints on the fare hike.
  5. they have been often. and we have been lied too often to believe whatever they now say.
  6. not forgetting the normal cost of there education plus flights and accommodation and food. just out of interest how many jobs have been cut to match this spend. no saving on the school as it remains open. can't see there figures adding up.
  7. try the youth hostel a bit dearer than camping but in mid winter you would be safe. unless you have amazing camping gear dont do it.
  8. think they employ over 200 folks and with these 2 new things setting up 15 is quite a small number. there pay rate is ok plus you can get a share option.
  9. yes we would all be better off on a more limited healthier diet. but peat you are missing the point shetland at the moment can not feed itself. if we did borrow mr wells time machine and pop back we would find everyone in one way or another connected to the land. we dont grow enough spuds to even feed ourselves. we would need multiple tingwall greenhouses to be built and hundreds of grow tunnels. also can you imagine a modern shetlander willing to risk starving if there crops failed.
  10. so your advice is that we who live up here should survive on a diet from 150 years ago. its possible that soup is healthy and can be very nice but pottage everyday me thinks not. we also need to bear in mind that 150 years ago shetland could feed itself in most things now it can't. apart from small producers our food would be limited to spuds swedes the odd cabbage fish and meat. so really its all waffle we have to import stuff or starve. same as the uk as an whole. out of interest where do you shop.
  11. I agree with colin as they are mainly just reselling others products most of the money will always head south. but so would a local supermarket.i would not fancy just eating food just produced here. ive still got the cook book that teaches how to cook fish guts. Shetlands produce is fresh and very nice but its really very limited. as to there profit well a little bit will head back in pension schemes and our investments. tesco has exacting rules to get on there shelves and yes they will cut what they pay to as little as they can but thats the free market for you. peat if a local had built a local supermarket in the 1970s then there would have been no room for the south shops to move here. there is a demand and they meet it so big deal. the demand is still there for a discounter like aldi. you know that privately owned german firm.
  12. of course there is not any malice we just see things differently. nothing wrong with that. this new law will require 2 doctors to agree. that involves the medical profession. people see palliative medicine as a failure when in reality its a highly specialized area its an area thats always been neglected which is a pity as dying is after all part of life. the wife is always affected when one of her patients dies but she also knows she has done her best to help them. she like me could not take part in assisting to kill someone. but thats our view. each to there own view
  13. im not dictating to you your choice of death. i am opposed to you getting the medical professionals involved. if you are of sound mind and terminal kill yourself if your sure thats what you want. even a loved one helping you wont get prosecuted for helping you no case in the last 4 years. involving the law and others and you get creep as in belgium. but as i was saying there are very few cases where an overdose would be the best treatment. how a palliative person is cared and treat can have a major impact on how they die. our first concern should be to insure that we have the best care that money can buy. that is the urgent priority. not new laws that neither the doctors nor nurses want to be part of.
  14. of course its YOUR choice. peat most of your post i agree with. if you have knowledge of a doctor using pain meds to kill a patient earlier than they should then as a civil duty you should report it. the wife is one of those trying to improve the care and treatment of dying folks. possibly one reason im so anti assisted suicide there is so much that can be done to support and maintain the patient at home in comfort. the major problem at the moment is social care or the lack of it. if the patient is close to death within a few weeks then they should get all the support they need and want. sadly this does not happen.
  15. no thanks. if thats how you think most folks die like you describe you need to go and work for a while in a hospice. until you have some real experience you should not be pushing for changes. or is this more trolling.
  16. i seem to remember that some labour councils were sacked in the past. and you miss the spending of the local councils and parish ones. in your figures are you counting the population of the unitary councils like blackburn
  17. tends only to be wort it if its an expensive model. contact the maker and send it to them. sorry i know its not helpful but they tend to just replace the board if thats the fault.
  18. i would prefer it stayed as it was and the care of the dying was better funded and provided.
  19. even if assisted suicide became legal the police would still need to investigate. in the rest of the uk a report would be needed for the coroner. look at how the police now investigate sudden infant deaths. they have to interview the family but they dont go in heavily unless there is a concern.
  20. just in case it was murder. not everyone is a caring compassionate spouse or loved one. there are many more murders and some are for greed and some will be because a carer gets angry. sick folks are not always nice either. even if some one is in the last days of life no one has the right to end it against there will. so if you do assist someone its right that the old bill should cast there beady eye over them. the law seems to be working no innocent folks locked up, if you dont have police over view you end up with killers like shipman doing is thing,
