Geothermal power, suitable for Shetland?
paulb replied to Nigel Bridgman-Elliot's topic in Science & Technology
so $2.5 million for about the same depth. so x3 = 7.500000 thats about the same. would a wind turbine tied into an air exchange system get you free heating and a lot cheaper to. -
Geothermal power, suitable for Shetland?
paulb replied to Nigel Bridgman-Elliot's topic in Science & Technology
this is from an icelandic site and as everything up here you can probably double it. cost of drilling a 3km bore hole £1,295,815.14 this is just the drilling this is a third of the total cost of the borehole so it would cost just a bit under £4000000 per hole. again the cost depends on rock being drilled. for every extra 500m add 15% http://http://conferences-engine.brgm.fr/contributionDisplay.py?contribId=22&sessionId=17&confId=5 -
Geothermal power, suitable for Shetland?

you seem to have had your answer in your friends of the earth post. its to expensive. so whats the cost of wind turbines/tidal/wave power per mega watt. -
so whats both the pro and anti are saying is that the shetland folk are not allowed a say untill all the money has been spent on eco studies, consultations of everybody except the people who count. i wonder why they dont want it. is it that the antis will lose or is it that the pro export lobby dont want the shetland folks say. very intresting that both sides think that the people cant understand the options available. its our money thats helping fund this scheme and its our land it will be built on. let us the people have the right to choose before anything else is done. why for example would they survey the route of the interconnector if they are waiting for all these studies. could the delay be that they are waiting for the new law that takes away the local councils right to apose nationaly important schemes. then it wont matter what we say we will get it dumped on us.

thats a nice summers day . thats just a bit breezy. you can tell that they are still standing.

as im sure you know. Shetland is old very old there is very little chance of there being any geothermal heat souces like in iceland. if your talking about borehole ground souce heat pumps your looking at 9000 50m holes. if your wanting it on the surface then the area of damage would be massive. you would still need power and then theres the cost of all the new heating systems.

thats the problem nobody has bothered to ask us what we want, if we are spending 10000 for public relations why cant this be used to ask a simple question like do you want a wind turbine farm. the in depth studies can then be done. if the folks want it then it should be done. if not then it should not. there are about 9500 households in shetland. so 2x36p stamps and 20p for paper and envelopes would still be cheaper than the 10 grand wasted on the pr.

with the costs of heating so high, reports of lots of peat spades being bought for next year. what area of peat is going to be burnt in the next 25 years. the peat is either going to be burnt or decay with the global warming. why do you think that the peat is so important. if we dont get the alternative power sources running soon we are going to see the tundra releasing its methaine then you can forget the peat completly. on our croft there is at least an acre of peat thats been removed so times that by the number of crofts and your area of peat used is above that. we have the right to another 3 peat banks so we could be stripping peat at the rate of about 20 tonnes a year for each croft house say 600 thats 12000 tonnes burnt each year. times that by at least 3 for the destruction of the non usable peat and your looking at 36000 tonnes a year that a lot of co2. i do think we should have a referendum on this what would the costings be to do it. could both your group and ve get together and really see what the shetland people want. so until either or both of you do so dont claim to speak for the people.

but logan air are not doing ba flights anymore. i tried the web page and it would not let me get the route. but yes lets hope it stays open.
-
just cant see them operating it to here when they have cancelled the main route
-
good idea and they can cope with the weather to but not the shetland version they look like big sheds.
-
are they going to cancel them as well. hope the holiday comes off. but what about all that carbon would a rowing boat not be more green. i know this daft englishman with one in slightly used condition.

getting the concrete up to fetlar will be difficult your going to have to think about the issues. your going to be spending a fortune in preparing the hole for the shelter. the stone is hard. getting equipment up there will also take planning smallish ferry. then you will need a contractor that amount of concrete is more than you can handle. then of course you will have fun with the planning they dont like alternative ideas hence all the grey hurle. have you thought of the expanded foam buildings this gives you insulation and strenght. it may be wise to look at how the old shetland folk built there homes. our old bit of the croft is a lot warmer and draught free than the 80s extension. we do get less rain than mainland britain but its get powered it hurts with a storm force wind behind it.

oh yes its cheaper. bring a tent. kent is NOT like Shetland. you will die up here if you mess up. The wife got us diitched at the end of April this year if there was no help we would have been in trouble. waist deep and very strong wind. Fetlar is an isolated island there is no secondary school if you get a family to move there you will have to send the kids to lerwicks hostel. the primary school must be indangered with the drop in population. the only shop is open part time. no petrol. it will take you most of the day to get from fetlar to lerwick and back. and you do need to travel to lerwick for a lot of stuff. but if you really want to do it you must do it. dont debate it to long just move. sorry to be a kill joy but your the best part of 2 days travel to get to London.

He's in the II magazine hosting two Polish film makers in his kingdom. have the tourist board of forvick examind the hotel yet. I hope he is not risking other peoples lives by giving lift to them.

nigel come in the winter. the summer is deceptive. you must get the worst weather before you decide. try coming up on the ferry in a strong gale. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=eaNimTgLJjA were not joking the wind is the killer.
-
Nigel Jarman have you been to fetlar. its a lovely island and the folks are nice. but i think your in for a shock when you move there. would suggest that you rent on the mainland for a few months and see if you can cope with a Shetland winter then shift up to Fetlar in spring. living in London you areoing to miss loads of things but there are big gains as well.

your not upto date with your law it has not been illegal to kill yourself for quite some time; what is illegal is to assist the person. what is sad is that you think a person with a mental health issue that reaches the point of wanting to destroy themselves is choosing there ending. its not a rational choice. there is a big diffrence from a person with a terminal illness deciding that its time to end it from those with a mental health illness. even those that are terminal most dont want to kill themselves they are scared of the pain and worried what there dying will have on there families. the hospice movement can and does help a lot of people with terminal illness to have a good death. its just a shame we dont have one up here.

not brushing properly would cause the hole. but if there is no active decay then its not the brushing. the dentist would have pulled the teeth in the past if they were very bad they dont like doing that any more. if you have more problems with your dentist you have the choice of complaining to the health board but lets face it you wont get anywhere. the other id try montfield and explain the problem. ive had loads of fillings and every tooth ive had to have out was because of the filling failing. treat them as a delay to the teeth being pulled. there is this coating that they can coat the teeth with that has been shown to reduce the amount of fillings needed. try boosting your kids calcium levels this may help with their adult teeth but even if it does not it wont hurt them.

sounds like they didnt clean the cavity before filling them. to get an infection under the tooth there has to be a way for the bug to get there. not your fault or your kids. the dentist did not spend long enough cleaning and disinfecting the wound.
