  1. how much C02 could we save if we bumped off all our farty sheep they must produce tons every day.
  2. apart from gps and compasses pole shift is not a big issue its aways happened and will do. the only thing to shift will be the magnetic pole. hey that means we will be crossing the equator lets wave to the aussies as we pass them on the way down. it is used to monter the spread of the alantic spread each shift comes at roughly equal gaps and this can be detected by running a magnetomiter across the mid atlantic ridge. the distance is then messured and you can work out much further away the US is. the cybermen told me it was the daleks but who can trust strange men in funny costumes.
  3. but what about the interconector thats going to be one very long cable. maybe the icelandic people want to keep there gysers intact!
  4. then lets make them do so that it benifits us not banks et.al. why should we not have cheap power. we certanly never had cheap petrol. its ours so lets use it.
  5. oh dear we had better call the doctor, who knows the daleks maybe coming. run and hide. torchwood it won't happen
  6. whats new wheres our free petrol that was promised at the time of sulloms building
  7. this is on there company web site Company Profile -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our company philosophy is to add a point of difference to our offering, something special in terms of ingredients and packaging that is unique to us and differentiates us from our competitors in the market place. We also understand that provenance is very important to today's consumer and we believe that, as we communicate this positive message to our customers, we are delivering the promise which our unique environment provides. main land scotland In a significant move for both companies, we have joined forces with a well known Scottish Salmon company, Cluny Fish. This move secures our long term future as a quality orientated local company using the best of locally sourced raw material. ye really Drawing on Cluny Fish's experience in the global marketplace, the Shetland Smokehouse will develop sales and expand its range, creating new value added herring and mackerel products for a discerning market. [/i]if this is not an abuse of shetlands name i dont know. unless you look very carefully it does not show that this is not a local company. plus we gave them money.
  8. so passing the global warming over to the other site. why should we not build them. we have had the council are stupid/incompetent(why then are they still the council) that the peat is so valuable (what the value of an acre of blanket bog. whats the stocking rate of sheep that you can have on it) that it will not make money(even if you just used it to provide heating and possably the power to produce hydrogen for our transport im sure we could break even) that the wind stops blowing( heat storage) that it will spoil the looks of the countryside( it will change it) that tourest will stop coming (the tourists provide the same amount of money as farming. farming is in difficulties the rent from the sites built would help support the local farming communities have i missed anything. so if the interconnector is built but not the wind farm. can you guess what could be built up here. lets have an atomic plant the goverment is wanting to build new ones. its clean, it produces plenty of jobs and the best part is its miles away from the main popultation centres. oh and if they did build one you could not stop it with the new rules that they are going to introduce about major cival projects. theres a perfect site becoming available in lerwick with all the dredged sand and stone from the harbour. that another point what impact did that have on the marine wildlife of the sound. i never noticed any impact studies.
  9. lets see science theories are just that. what the scientist do is weigh up the evidence and come to a view. when most are agreed that then becomes scientific fact. so its either most of the scientists or mr bush. thhe scientist maybe wrong but there are very few indepentent scientist that have this view. so if grobal warming is in fact manmade then we have to try and sort it out. people claimed that the ozone layers could not be fixed it was to late. but by banning cfc its repairing itself. let nature heal or we will all go the way of the dodo.
  10. Why must we fight it? Notwithstanding the fact that it is actually happening, will continue to happen, that mankind has anything to do with it, or has the power to influence it all have yet to be proven to me, I'm not entirely sure climate change, as it is promoted by those who think themselves experts in such matters, and if they are indeed anywhere near correct, is an entirely bad thing. i think i have some sand somewhere that you can put your head into. you will gamble our future on the multinational oil companies. that sound logical why would they promote alternatives to there oil reserves. they have most of the oil reserves in the world and as it gets rarer there profits will increase. so why would they want to find an alternative to oil. does debeers incourage the use of man made diamonds as an enviromentaly friendly alternative to there products . no and you will never see the oil companies give up there postion. so is your view that global warming is a load of rubbish. or is it that were stuffed and we should just put up with it.
  11. The camps were built on private land and the landowners were given a lump sum to pay for demolition, as you can see the landowners kept the cash and decided against demolition. SVT is a petrochemical facility in the same way that an oilrig is, legislation was brought in several years ago to the effect that the owners are responsible for the decommisioning of every piece of steel right up to the moment it is melted down. i will belive it when i see it.
  12. show me the evidence that shows that the alkaliity will affect the enviroment. they are going to build them on very acidic ground any leachate will be neutralised by the acid hence a neutral water supply. also trout seem to enjoy chalk/limestone rivers. its the acid from commercial tree planting that is the killer. and it would have to be large very large plantings of dense conifers to make it worthwhile. they have near zero wildlife in them and they are very dark and boring to look at. an alternitive which would still damage the bogs would be to grow willow for coppicing to burn at the power station again this would require most of the peat bog to be planted up. why do we need to retore it to its original state why not improve it so nature can gain from it. remember blanket bog is just a sign that we have beggered up nature in the first place. the first railway between manchester and liverpool had to cross chat moss a very large area of peat they used wood and saplings etc. and it is still in use. you mean we have none now. how about the one at scalloway. we just have to be careful how its done unlike all the eyesores that sullom kicked up. how about using the drilling waste as the hard core. what about removeable track ways. theres plenty of things that can be done reduce the impact on the enviroment.
  13. Part of the original SVT building contract stipulates that when the site is decommissioned the owners/ shareholders( bp, total, exxon etc) must return it to a natural state. the site is built on family land( can't remember the name offhand) and is on a longterm lease to the various oil companies who own the terminal( BP just run it and have a low % stake). they were ment to clean up the camps as well but i remember that it was the council who had to pay. they were ment to pay rent to the council but that was talked out of the contract. so if we dont use the wind or waves then it back to either coal or Nuclear power. which would you perfer on your doorstep. as a local councillor said at a meeting get used to the fact that oil and the way we run our lives is nearly over we need to adapt or die. im assuming that you have all the modern electrical items so are you prepared to give them up. it is the only choices we have renewables or fosil fuels/nuclear. or back to the pre industrial life styles of our ancestors. i dont fancy doing that so we need the power now.
  14. you missed the point. who is going to pay to restore this site. i wonder who owns the site. guess the question is too easy. so i post this one what must you do with an heavy industry site when its removed. you need to remove the polution that has sank into all that nice absorbant peat. what are you going to do with it when you have. i know in shetland you like to leave the ruins of things alone but you cant leave sullom voe alone. http://photos.shetland-museum.org.uk/index.php?a=subjects&s=item&key=SYToyOntpOjA7aTo0ODc7aToxO3M6MTA6IlN1bGxvbSBWb2UiO30=&pg=57 when were the radio thingis put up. i think we have learnt things since then. have a drive around aith and lower voe there is plenty of rocky barren ground. have a closer look at the peat. you will see that shetlanders have scalped large areas of peat over the centuries. place the turbines in areas that have been damaged. use the peat that is removed to restore the damaged peat and reseed. it works in the peak district. http://photos.shetland-museum.org.uk/image.php?i=45227&r=2&t=4&x=1 the major peat slides in the south will always happen. in fact they will happen a lot more soon. hot dry summers followed by wet winter produces slides. in fact look at the hillsides as you drive about you will see the remains of loads of them. if you have an hour or so have a read of this it shows most peat slides have been natural not man made http://www.geog.leeds.ac.uk/people/j.holden/esr2004.pdf why not use one of the disused fish factories on the west side for the connector site. sand is nice and empty and we could do with the few jobs it would create. now if your concerns are the total inability of the council to manage anything then lets buy in the skills needed and lets keep the council away from it. if it that you object to it because of the natural beauty of the landscape. well its not the first time shetland has had to make these choices as those with a view of sullom voe or any other industry. i do wounder why there are non planned for the hills of the south mainland or around lerwick. its aways the north that gets dumped on.
  15. then lets make sure that any wind farm is used to provide shetlands heating needs first. it seems to work for the halls on a small scale. the bogs are only a product of tree felling in the bronze age. but reforesting shetland will spoil the beauty of the drive from voe to lerwick. anyway the commercial planting of foreign trees produces acidic conditions that kill life in the burns which would also kill all those trouty things in the lochs. have a look at the trees in kergord they seem to be struggling a bit. use to live near a small 20 turbine farm it always looked ok and no damage to the ground. in fact why not set a levy of say 1% to improve shetlands enviroment. by they way who is going to pay to restore sullom voe when its finished. what about the voe they filled in with all the peat they shifted. were there any major disasters because the peat was shifted. the same with scarsta they shifted thousands of tonnes of peat to build that the area looks ok.
  16. have lots of weird red and black toadstools growing on the croft not sure i would recomend eating them though you may start to grow (alice in wonderland) was she on a trip. (*** Mod - Hotlinked image removed ***)
  17. hang on i was a nazi for the last two days. it does take a while for me to swing over that far in my politics. so i will have to bull doze the centre of lerwick to build my red square. then a state owned supermarket that will teach tescos. then i had better build a palace of the people at somewhere near the musium. then i had better employ most of the workers in my totarian empire. oh hang on we have most of that now it will just have to be the combine armed forces of shetland marching through lerwick on mayday , possably dressed up as women oh yes and waving bits of metal about and torches. wo betide any kings on this set of islands, must have a firing squad for somebody. still need the jack boots but maybe in a patent red instead. http://chromatism.net/current/images/reichstag2.jpg
  18. that freedom of use does not work, your making someone happy and rich. the freedom changes to slaverly and poverty. there was a man in stockport who opened a dutch coffee house there. he was happy to go to court and prison for his choice. so lets see all the drug users phone the police and confess there using habits. this will then save millions of pounds that can be spent on my jack boots
  19. plant trees on this rare valuable blanket bog. no please we only have a little bit. by the way you cant plant trees in blanket bog they dont survive and if you found one that did it would drain the water from the peat. why not remove the peat from near the turbine use it as fuel. its going to be dug up soon with all the turf digging anyway. repair the damage with composted waste and thus we have fertile land for all of your little trees. the peat is classed as a renewable resorce so use it,
  20. involves lots of big tubes and things. oh yes and rubber gloves. and theres usually people watching.
  21. get in the way of the big ones and very unpleasant things happen. who knows the SIC could be hiring some italian american public relation experts to deal with there problems. and lets face it we do have lots of shetland ponies. could be heads you win and tails you loo's http://www.kropserkel.com/Images/horsehead%20(9).jpg
  22. then lets dig the peat up and use it in a standard power station. i wounder if the bills would go down. then once we have burnt up all the peat we can stick up loads of turbines and use the power in our stoage heaters
  23. is wrong drug use is abusei think you are slightly mistaked take some crack and lets see how soon your fun lasts. how abut some crystal meth try that and see how long you enjoy it. in fact is not one of the ingredients in meth drain cleaner. even you little spliff has a 10% chance of causing psychological dependence. oh i forgot to mention my wife informs me it increases your blood pressure and heart rate. so tying that in with your Tobacco use it will not be long before she or one of her friends is sticking things in places you dont want to think about. that sounds good lets put the sale of these filthy substances into the hands of a multi national company. who knows a little trial sample in every pack of fags. i seem to remember a couple of wars we fought to allow our legal companies to dope up the chinese. so all those opium dens were just propaganda no addidtion no millions of lives ruined. you would only be putting the trade into the hands of corparations that would teach organised crime a thing or two. face it if your using your playing russian roulette. one day you will find out you need it and then its to late. drug use is abuse.
  24. then lets stop messing around your aguements for pro drug use is not going to happen. not even the most libral country in the world allows the free use of drugs. theraputic(sorry about the spelling) drugs are dangerous in fact a fare few deaths a year are caused by them. but the diffrence is they have a purpose. whats the purpose of street drugs apart of course to hide from life. what do you think happens to the addicts family i think they get hurt by the addicts choice. now lets have a look at the so called safe drugs cannabis is addictive. go find an heavy user of a few years. then tell me its harmless. by they way its causes just as much cancer as fags. now how about all the lives destroyed and inslaved by the producers. make me out to a nazi thats fine. but just because i apose your dangerous views does not make me wrong. nobody will make a law to stop you killing yourself but you had better hope that there are laws to stop others helping you.
  25. with jack boots. very hard on the supply. compulsion on the user. the reason prohibition does not work is that the people who are in charge dont have the courage to inforce the laws. and please no more jokes. drugs = death have we not had cannibis farms found in shetland recently what did they get in sentancing. i thought the maximum sentance for supply is life. now a few of them would soon cut the demand
