If you look at the first page of Globus Group , right down at the bottom, you will clearly see who is part of them. Oh, and "2015 -  2020" is written beside it.

Their head office is at T2 Trafford Point, Twining Road, Trafford Park, Manchester, M17 1SH, England. The head office of Globus Group, who own Globus (Shetland) Ltd, has never moved south, they can't, because that's where they come from and hopefully it's where they'll stay.

i suggest you check companies houes you will find globus group does not exist because it is trading name 2015-2020 refers to the period they are claming ownership of the copyright for the website

that address is not there registered office but infact the location they run mainland sales from a big difference

  3. It would appear that the consultation was like most, a foregone consultation, where someone already had the rubber stamp in hand hovering over the paperwork.  I feel sorry for the new staff as the job looks fairly complex, especially will all the extra selling that goes into it, and much comes with experience.  If sense prevails one of the current PO staff will be brought into Conochies on decent money so that the new staff can get trained up from them, otherwise the chances are that it will be a complete gang f++k for a few months. Pay peanuts, get monkeys.  Other parcel couriers are available though.  Looking on the positive side, at least Conochies will finally have 2nd class stamps in stock, and not 2nd Large as is usually the only option.  Although if you can't manage to keep stamps in stock, I am at a loss to how you are going to make a go of a Post Office.

Bolts PO staff may be OK, but the queueing system is as bad as similarly named Boots.  You only have to have some halfwit stood next to their husband* and the passageway is blocked.  It will be interesting to see the floor plan of Conochies with the new PO in place to see how they manage the queueing.  I assume that the Thorntons area is being thinned out as a way of making space to shunt a reduced stationery offering into.  Not a bad idea as the footfall in the stationery part of the shop seems minimal; so quiet that Goudies could have a desk in there.

I am curious to know what Da Street PO will become.  Perhaps another eatery or charity shop.  I am hoping that there will finally be some attempt at expanding the accommodation in that area.  Hjaltland could throw up some of their tiny flats there.  The street really does need to be less commercial, and more residential taking up the space of the dying businesses as they become available.

    *Or wife.

completely agree as shops empty they should be allowed to convert to residential some of the ones at the south end near the queens have been granted permission of late such as the spiders web.

  4. It seems a little strange to me that the Post Office can pay a decent(?) wage and, presumably, make a profit so, why can't Conochies ?

On a related issue I think that Conochie's is to "small" anyway.  They might be getting a lot of extra "footfall" out of it but, the PO can be very busy at times and large queues are not uniusual.  Look at Bolts as an example.

As for TUPE regulations.  It's just a guess but I would think that existing PO staff were being made redundant and were offered positions by a new employer (Conochie's).  If this is correct then, resignations were a bit "premature".

they are not franchising it out because it was making money post office counters have been very open about the fact that crown offices cost more to run than they make in commission

This just in.... the Post Office move just might be off again.... the staff from the old Post Office who were to move to Conochies have all quit when they discovered they were going to have their pay chopped to minimum wage. Reportedly Conochies is currently trying to recruit new staff.

An additional point of interest - a certain Local Retailer has said that he would have been happy to host the Post Office counter..... but he never got the chance to apply for it.

And finally - let us not lose track of the ironic fact that our very own MP, Alistair Carmichael, voted in favour of privatising the Post Office. Well done, Al!

this was definetly advertised also post office counters has not been privatised

  5. ^It would be interesting to know just what sort of Travellers have been coming up here. Have they been Highland Travellers, Romani Lowland Travellers, English Romani's, Border Romanichal Travellers or Showmen? Does anybody know?

    are you performing a census?

  6. Urabug, there's an industrial site just a short distance away with plenty of pier space.

The tabloids love stories about China moving villagers to make way for industry. Plenty of criticism there and little difference here. Just complete disregard for the people affected.

The local householders here also sacrificed for the greater good, but the common sense approach is take it to the industrial area.

Jobs still there and everyone happy.

There's also a strong possibility that the company will close the Lerwick plant and the workers when this is built, and  all 5 required will travel to Toft..

Everybody in the north end unhappy suddenly.

By the way there are plenty of alternatives that wont destroy people's lives, I don't suppose you'll be affected whatever happen

where is this lerwick plant everybody speaks about

  7. Just thinking Whalsa, why don't you get in touch with the company and tell them all about the closure of the fish factory. Tell them you'd be delighted if they came to Symbister with this exciting new venture. Inform them about the building that is now lying empty and how easy it would be for you to find 5 able bodied individuals to man the plant. Ask them to check out all the benefits Symbister could offer the company including excellent pier facilities.

They could even pop over and give a little talk at the school about the apprenticeships and the exciting future that they offer. I'm sure we would all benefit from knowing the details there.

I think you may have the answer to our battle with this company, they could transfer their plan and their nets over your way.

They may employ you as their PR man.

    Everyone's a winner.

i think the company now operating from the x factory may have something to say about it being empty

  8. Why Taft anyway. If nets are being gathered in from various locations, anyplace reasonably central to their sources that ticks the other boxes would surely do equally well?

A cynic might say the only reason this is being mooted as is, is some bright spark in a suit behind a desk in a SIC office has decided putting it there makes a better business case for building a new pier......which probably wouldn't have been an issue if the same bright spark, or one of their colleagues or former colleagues had maintained the old one for the last 20 years.

surely its the closest site on the mainland to all the fish farms in the north isles?

  9.

    > the best we can hope for is that finally all the tarmac patches will be replaced with flags again.

I wonder why they didn't put the old ones back, or were they in pieces ?

With an island built of rock, one might imagine replacement ones could be obtained cheaply..

Either that, or decent, but cheap ones made of concrete that look just like the real thing.

So.. no stack of spare ones kept at the time they was put down for replacements then.. ?

If memory serves, all the flags currently on the Street were imported from outwith Shetland, which maybe gives some clue to the thinking and mentality behind whoever makes decisions on such things.

Again, if memory serves, the missing ones were those which worked loose in use. The last I can recall them being mentioned was several years ago, when those who are supposed to know about such things advised that the tarmac was temporary while they undertook a 'experiment' in an area of 'similar traffic' somewhere at Gremista, of bedding flags in a selection of base materials to establish which was the most resilient to loosening.

What happened, who knows.........Its been a long time. I heard someplace the Council has massive carpets, so its understandable that what may have been swept under them, takes a very long time to re-appear.....I guess.

best thing that could happen is they replace the flags with tar flags are outdated and impractical just the same as shops dont deliveries from a horse and cart times change we cant live in the past

  10. If I want to buy a six pack of beer ill buy it regardless of how many places are selling it , if I decide to go for a pint or two its nice to have a choice for something new and refreshing like recent openings on commercial street , why should the public be forced to use the same old places to suit the corrupt licensing board ?

research and also common sence point towards the idea that the more licenced premises the more chance of getting served when you are intoxicated if you can try to look sober 4 times instead of 2 its no surprise you have more chance of being served and in turn more chance of dying from the alcohol do not forget in a pub, restaurant, nightclub you can get cut off in an off licence you can buy enough alcohol in one purchase to kill you.

  11.

Trouble is that now they have got away with  intruducing "Minimum Alcohol Pricing", they will push to make a can of lager £10 (or something equally silly) just the way they have done with tobacco because "it's for your own good"....

Minimum alcohol pricing was brought in by Holyrood. Changes in tobacco laws were made by Westminster, were they not

pretty sure the tobacco rules are a devolved issue and although they would have been inspired by eu legislation the fine prine would have come from hollyrood but i think westminster would not have been involved in the scottish rules
