  1. I'm getting exactly the same speeds as you, on our BT Business account. I'd report it to them, but I've learned from long experience that phoning them just ties up the line for fifteen minutes or more and never produces any concrete information or help whatsoever, and oddly enough the "Report or track a fault" link on their website doesn't seem to lead to a page where you can actually report a fault.
  2. Thanks. Glad to see that he is up there That was the reason we were ready to leap to conclusions when we were discussing it originally - we were old enough to remember only too well all the other grandiose schemes that've been raised over the years and eventually collapsed in ignominy....
  3. We were talking about this film just yesterday and wondering if it was all on the level, since there doesn't seem to be any listing for either the film or the director - Jim Brown - on the IMDB, which lists some very small budget productions, episodes of TV shows, etc. and also lists cameramen, makeup artists and so on.
  4. I've been asked to fix a lot of horrifically infected machines by friends, family, and colleagues, riddled with every virus known, and I've never had to reformat a machine yet, so don't give up hope! First off, try "Spybot Search & Destroy" that ArabiaTerra mentioned, I've found it quite handy in the past. As far as antiviruses go, I used to use AVG, but moved over to Avast Antivirus which seems pretty effective. I also use a custom hosts file, which blocks a lot of the sources of malware, adware and even adverts at the very lowest level, but that counts more as prevention than cure Also, what Internet browser are you using? If you're using Internet Explorer, I'd advise you to just give it up ASAP. I honestly haven't had a single virus infection on any of my PCs since I stopped using IE back in 2002 or thereabouts. I can't in all honesty recommend Firefox as a suitable alternative to IE in its present form, but Opera and Google Chrome are both top notch.
  5. I uttered a hollow laugh when I saw this in the Shetland Times yesterday, in the piece about Nicola Sturgeon praising Shetland NHS: So, if a 5 year waiting list doesn't automatically make the case for a new dental surgery, what the hell will!? Note: I said "5 year" to be on the safe side; I know people who have been on the list for longer than that, one of them in particular slowly getting his teeth hauled one by one due to his inability to get any preventive dentistry. Inquiries to Montfield about the current waiting time generally meet with polite evasion, suggesting it's gone up again.....
  6. After reading the thread, I'm curious - is there any affordable accommodation in the private sector in Shetland at all? I originally went South in 1995 because of the impossibility of finding a place of my own, and came back North in 2009 after I was made redundant, to find things as bad as they had been. I'm employed, but it doesn't help that I'm getting £3000 a year less than I did South for exactly the same job, and of course South rents (and everything else) were significantly lower. People don't leave Shetland because they don't like it - they leave because they just can't afford to live here.
  7. tarotangel - Exactly the same thing started happening with my monitor last year, which is a 5-year old LCD. Turned out it was the external power supply - I got an equivalent unit for about £12 on ebay and it's worked fine ever since. Of course, if it's a monitor with an internal power supply you're out of luck... though Last Ditchology might be able to do something.
  8. Just read an article in the Independent about Tesco's business practices and thought I'd post the link. Scary stuff! Tesco, dirty tricks, and the battle over a new store in rural Norfolk
  9. I had no idea Acrobat could do that until I read your post, so I went and tried it and yes, the links in the PDFs it makes do indeed work!
  10. A couple of years ago I sent off my photo driving licence to update the address... then remembered the next day I'd need it in a fortnight's time to fly to Shetland... yes, the air turned blue, I can tell you, since the DVLA isn't noted for its speed. I ended up going to the local railway station and getting a photocard, after I phoned and asked the airlines and found out it would do for ID. I thought I'd have to buy a ticket or something but no, I got given a blank one, had the photo booth, pointed out, and was left to my own devices to fill in my details and seal the sticky plastic... which kind of made a mockery of the whole Photo ID thing In the end the licence came back the day before, so I never used the Photocard.
  11. That study sounds very very dubious... seeing how it was done for a drug company that has an "anti-obesity" drug to sell... also this: I'm curious now to know which practice it was
