  1. Apologies to the inhabitants of ZE3, but I had assumed that the fabled microclimate in the deep south would have been more...err...balmy. Still, this morning I can actually see the other side of the voe... Edit: Nope, it's gone again.
  2. If found, please return asap to all ZE1 and ZE2 postcodes. Many thanks in advance.
  3. Plus if the are Shetland related subject matter, the regular book auctions in Market Street are your best bet.
  4. To maintain the positive tone, at least when it's windy there is negligible risk of a tree being blown down on to your roof
  5. Totally agree. All these ads relating to instant loans, life insurance for the over 50s, free lawyers to sue someone, we buy your gold, get out of debt free with our help etc are all targeted at financially vulnerable people who may be so desperate that reading the small print appears irrelevant. What amazes me is that all these ads are (presumably) perfectly legal and don't attact the attention of Advertising Standards either. To me as a non lawyer they often stretch my ideas on legality and especially morality to breaking point and beyond. Where are all the consumer protection bodies and caring politicians when you need them?
  6. I'm with the confused & underdog comments, both candidates for Room 101. In addition: All the ads which imply that hip 20somethings favourite leisure time activity is playing (a) bingo or ( online poker The ads that imply that payday loans at APRs up to about 5000% are a smart way to start up your new business venture, pay car expenses, and generally manage your finances (!)
  7. Shetlandpeat: I'm glad you explained PMT for us all. I wouldn't want you to be misunderstood and have my wife to deal with
  8. General sale on for tomorrow 1.30pm, viewing 4 - 8pm today.
  9. I post here anonymously but a young whippersnapper from Mississippi borrows my name from time to time
  10. Usual deal is an auctioneers notice in the ST, viewing on the Friday 4 - 8 pm, auction Saturday 1.30. Best just to keep an eye on the paper imo.
  11. Mansons in Kantersted Road...Happy Xmas
  12. Suggested music for the state funeral: Won't get fooled again/The Who?
  13. In addition to Bayanne which is an excellent source, I would also suggest getting in touch with the Shetland Family History Society at 6 Hillhead, Lerwick, ZE1 0EJ or email research@shetland-fhs.org.uk. you will find them very helpful. Main website is www.shetland-fhs.org.uk.
  14. Thanks for that. Saves another silly phone chat being told there must be a problem with the livebox/house wiring/ISP so we need to reset everything in sight, and just to be sure, check the oil level in the pickup.
  15. A sad loss, a real gent and a great ambassador for sport.
  16. Better than a turret or black bags, lets spend £450,000 on yet another study of tunnels for which there is no sensible prospect of funding either for within or outwith Shetland. there's always room in the budget for this sort of stuff seemingly.
  17. There's also a very good dvd of Gary @ Montreux in 1990, shares several numbers with Albert Collins (also sadly gone now) well worth checking out for the blues side of his playing.
  18. He wasn't just a rock player, not too shabby as a bluesman either... Sad loss.
  19. Just a thought, when we were working on displays for the Nesting Hamefarin exhibition last year .we obtained large scale aerial reconnaisance photos from the Amenity Trust. These date from just after the war, I think 1946 & 48, they are being used as part of the place names project. If Walls is covered then this would hopefully show you what was at Watsness before it was demolished/dismantled. It would help interpret whatever remains?
  20. I believe RAF Watsness was one of the Chain Home Low radar stations giving early warning of aircraft attack, so there should be quite a lot of info available. I think the radars would have been smaller than the towers of Battle of Britain fame. Hope this helps!
  21. We rented one of the Norwegian log house types as per the posting pf 1 Aug 2010 for a holiday on the Black isle last year and were most impressed with it. One question: is there any data on life expectancy (or at least before major remedial work is required) for this method of construction versus concrete block + harling, I'm thinking Shetland climate here.....?
  22. Misdirection/distraction is how politicians do these things. Not just Stornoway vs Shetland Leuchars/lossiemouth is another, whilst everybody is focussed on fighting their corner it turns into Moray vs Fife and meanwhile the validity of the original proposition goes unchallenged. Same thing has been happening in other areas eg fire service control centres.
  23. When I worked in london the battle of Britain Flight used to come directly over our house every year on the way in. 6 Rolls Royce Merlins flying in close formation, now that was a PROPER noise....aaah.....
