  1. Hi getting a pick up from APC for a floor cleaner that has stopped working, anyone know who their local agent is? I think the Aberdeen agent is Menzies
  2. Shetlink now working on all platforms in the house Cheers to Trout for sorting out Shetlink's IVP6 settings
  3. Mr Trout sorted out the problem on Windows 10 by disabling IVP6 and using IVP4 alone Our Neighbor was experiencing the same problem, no Shetlink and only Shetlink, every thing else ok. Apple OS is unable to modify IVP6 controls. There is a possibility of sorting this out at the WIFI level but Home hub6 seems unable to do this. he has put his home hub 4 back and the problem has disappeared I suggest a problem with IVP4 / 6 settings - any help? Ipads / iphones still unable to access on our home-hub wifi
  4. Apple OS reports unable to conect to server, windows 10 reports out of dat cerfificate. Any body got any clues how to sort.
  5. No sign of a new ro-ro set up, or any refrence to the north isles boats in the bits I read, should we worry?
  6. Just had a light bulb moment - Earlier this summer David Cammeron made a unanounced vist to Shetland - the local council wined and dined him and he stayed overnight I think- there was a bit of a ho-ha as the media hadn't been informed about it and it went largly un-reported in the national press. Was the crafty sod doing a deal with our council and Carmichael ????? http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2014/sep/17/shetland-may-reconsider-place-scotland-yes-vote-alistair-carmichael http://newsnetscotland.com/index.php/scottish-news/9556-downing-street-silent-on-camerons-secret-shetland-visit
  7. Ahhhh that could keep the nimbys going for months
  8. The first sentence in your reply is indicative of an underlying justified racist attitude, you identify communities in the plural and identify a requirement to build bridges. Why are separate “Communities†acceptable, surly there should be one community, the group of people who live in a given place. “Building bridges†is reinforcing this by establishing set points of contact rather than integration of all folk into the one community. This is a underlying racism that seems to emanate from the educated liberal elite (for the sake of giving a title for a wide group of people) which has halted the integration of folk into our community by highlighting the divisions and entrenching them in “celebrations of culture†A British person moving to say, Spain, who refuses to learn the language and lives in a closed community of likewise minded people and who develops their own language newspapers and shops with foodstuffs from the "home country" are quite rightly denounced as xenophobic and unwilling to integrate. Why then when folk move to our fair land is the opposite true, is it not the role of the person moving to our land to integrate with us? While we need to maintain a sense of understanding and acceptance it should not be unlimited. The folk who join our communities should do just that, join our communities, not set up their own. There should be no room for folk who apologise for anything else. I think the underlying problem was illustrated last year when a English footballer got in trouble for calling another player a black c**t. On the pitch it was not a problem but as it was televised lip readers complained. My point, the player was black, that is a fact, but it was this, that the issue was raised about, not the abusive term that followed. We as a nation are slowly disappearing up our own backside as we try to appease all these “communities†and the loudest noise comes from the largely white, largely British, hand ringers. Before the tirade of abuse: I was spent most of my childhood in SE England, I count amongst my friends folk of all different hues from white to Blue Black and everything in-between. Those guys by today’s standards experienced daily racism as they in turn where racist to us. We continued to live, to play and be friends, The differences between us was the colour of skin this was treated in the same way as colour of hair, we were intergrated. We belonged to the same comunity, If we had been identified as seperate and had to celebrate each others cultures it would of enphasised the differences and things might have been diffrent. -Rant Over-
  9. Any body got any details on the fast jet that gave lerwick a low pass this afternoon?
  10. Just Me Thank you for second comment, the Hydro Linesmen perform heroics on a regular basis and are an un-sung emergency service. I think you thinking is flawed, if you take your argument that because of equipment fire, the Hydro are incapable of running a wind farm. and we transfer this: Every car malfunction would mean that brand could no longer sell a car. Boeing because the dreamliner is a problem should be banned from building an aircraft again...... You get my drift Your original post about causing a fire on a wet night shows a limitied understanding of the causes of pole fires on a par with mine but I believe the amount of water in the air allows arcing across the contacts normally insulated by the air gap.
  11. Does anybody have the actual figures for the admin costs for education, how many folk are there in the HQ providing "support" During the Scalloway High school "consultation" we experienced the total lack of competence and integrity from the SIC's imported staff. These are a group of people who seem hell bent on turning Shetland into "just another " Scottish council. COSLA seems to have the same agenda. (if I remember correctly it was on a COSLA recommendation that the SIC employed and then a COSLA negotiated the redundancy that got rid of David Clark) When will we learn that the answers that come from this group of jobbing transient mercenaries will never fit the needs of Shetland but will only provide a continuous gravy train for this middle ranking public sector "jobs for the boys" club. Our council needs to provide clear direction to this crew not contiually "take advise from". tail wagging the Dog comes to mind.
  12. Anybody tell if this is avalible to Shetland land owners or if it is another Western Isles, SNP sweetner? http://www.scotsman.com/news/environment/grants_to_bring_woods_back_to_western_isles_1_2125818
  13. Anyone with any more details on this. Is it national or just Shetland? Any idea what time it starts?
  14. Some interesting reading here from Gilbert Goudie in the early 20th century http://ads.ahds.ac.uk/catalogue/adsdata/arch-352-1/dissemination/pdf/vol_021/21_236_251.pdf he outlines some of the attempts by the Danish crown to retrive Shetland And Orkney from Scotland, I wouldn't expect the current leaders of the country to be any less devious and dupicit in any dealings over the self determination of Shetland's place in the world. To summerise, the question of Shetland and Orkney's position as being held in leu of the dowery payment has not been settled and the right to claim the islands back is still open. Also as stipulated in the treaty granting Norway it's independance in the early 1900's the right to claim Shetland and Orkney is with the Danish Crown not Norway!
  15. The council elections that are coming this year will present us, the people of Shetland with the opportunity to put in place a group of people who will strive for the best for Shetland rather than strive for the best for them / their group of cronies. Make sure that you get the right person to represent you, some of the old guard have been living on past glories for far too long, some are still on a personal ego trip. The staff of the SIC who are currently made up of a lot of "sooth" bodies should also be taken to task, to run Shetland for the benefit and advancement of Shetland, rather than the headlong rush to turn Shetland into just another Scottish local authority. I think that this is the best chance for Shetland to advance it's position since the SIC act of parliament in the 70's. We need to quickly develop a common voice on this, in the new council. A crown dependency seems attractive, either from Scotland or the UK. Either way we need to ensure we get the best deal rather than sit on the sidelines and mumble complaints when the crumbs fall off the political table elsewhere, Information is now key, we need to know the real impact of independence / Crown dependency, cost to the individual, effect on government, effect on community, effect on key services (health, education etc). The control of information and it's spin will win this argument.
  16. Yeah, it seams to have settled down again last night, one or two blips on the screen but apart from that ok
  17. Anyone else having trouble with BBC signal from Scalloway?
  18. "What a shame that another Shetland independant shop is closing. It would be a travesty if Tesco moved into Clive's " I agree that Clives shutting is a loss, and points to an even more sterile street in the future. but... Anyone remember the little independent shop that use to be across the road from Clives? Name of Liptons, then Prestos before they moved out to Sound........ I Also remember the nashing of teath and renting of clothes when that closed. Also when Hepworths & The Co-op left the street. I think a mix is the right thing to have not just big is bad small is beautiful
  19. The recent “riots†are down to one thing, the chance to get something for nothing. Shoplifting on a large scale, with a bit of hell raising thrown in for fun. The Sub culture question:- The growth of the benefit dependant population has continued to grow, (something for nothing) until it has reached a critical mass. Not all the rioters were but the majority were benefit dependent and young, The only way to deal with this sub culture is going to be long and take a couple of generations, the same length of time that created it. I am not calling for cuts in benefits, this would lead to more active criminality to make up the short fall (some would find work but most would not and see employment as a mugs game) My first move would be to demand contraceptive implants prior to anyone going on any form of state funded benefits (both male and females) and to continue on benefits you need to continue receiving contraceptives implants. Within a couple of generations you will breed this drain on society out of existence.
  20. Anybody else with low pressure water in Lerwick? In Harbour Street and the electric shower won't work and flashes the low pressure warning light!
  21. Cheeky one this; Will Mr Jonatan Wills and Mr Cecil Smith, both members of the Anderson High School Parents council and representitives of the Lerwick South Council Ward, be decairing an interest prior to any Council chamber Vote? And have they done so in the past?
  22. This is not a stop to the closure of Scalloway secondary dept but a move to delay it to a point where a new Anderson is in place and fit to accept these children. This is a sensible motion to ease the combining of the two school populations, both sets of children will be "New" in a new Anderson, the existing Anderson pupils will not be crowded any more than they already are! Scalloway will be able to carry out a measured closure, the move would become less of a Lerwick v the rest. There appears a media and "cheep tricks politican" drive to silence any reform to a decision as a U turn it's not it's an enhancement.
  23. Many thanks for your assorted views on Shetland dialect, but how about taking it onto another thread and leave this one for discussion on the pros and cons of Our councillors attempts at government and provision of education for our children. A couple of things on my mind. I was also a bit mystified by the timing of the motion to modify the decision, note the word modify, apparently this is stipulated in council procedure, that it can't be voted on until after 6 months, 17 Dec to 17 May. The vote will not be on stopping the closure, but delaying it to a point that the new Anderson is up and a fit place to accept the Scalloway pupils. This is not a u turn but a bit of sound thinking. Bit rich for councillor Wills to go on about changing council decisions, after his excellent performance on the relocation of the Anderson. This, if you believe the media, cost millions and has lead the new Anderson to years late, if he had accepted the previous vote on the location of the new Anderson, we would be much nearer having a new school and this would be a mute discussion, maybe Dr Jonathon needs to look at his own performance and it’s impact before pontificating on the actions of other councillors who are following council process and fighting for the best for the children from their wards.
  24. I must admit to fealing a certain disquite this morning when I heard about the way of his demise, American trops into an urban Pakistani area. Coupled with the crowing by our beloved PM, which had a definate bum note, "Justice" in the UK does not end in Death, or maybe things have changed since I last looked!
