  1. I ken a few folk dat swear by Vanguard funds and say dey've done quite weel ower da long term. I wish I'd hiv taken dir advice when dey got intae it years ago!
  2. Dat's is indeed da billion dollar question! If it wis an easy answer den it wid mak da Brexit decision an easy een too, but it's no joost a case dat we gee 'dem' some money and den 'dey' gee wis it back. We a globalised economy dir will never be an easy answer tae dat. Du hit da nail on da head, den kinda reversed and tried to blame da EU. I reckon we canna squarely blame da EU for da decline o manufacturing. I doot da fact dat sooth aest Asia can knock things oot far cheaper is da root o dat.
  3. So da interconnector is lookin liklee https://www.shetnews.co.uk/2019/03/19/ofgem-provisionally-approves-interconnector-plans/ And wir wan step nearer tae a windfarm den
  4. Dis is interesting - https://www.shetnews.co.uk/2019/03/16/facebook-gets-the-althing-treatment/ I wisna at da Althing, and I dunna use Facebook much, but whit do you folk think? Is Facebook a good or bad thing?!
  5. ^ it says at da bottom o every page o da website du linked to dat "Fair Isle Bird Observatory is run by an independent charity, Fair Isle Bird Observatory Trust (a registered Scottish charity SCO 11160)."
  6. https://www.shetnews.co.uk/2019/03/11/trust-keen-to-see-bird-observatory-rebuilt/ "Dennis added that as the building was insured, the trust is not planning to put out a special appeal to raise funds. People from across the world have questioned on social media how they can help, however, with some people choosing to donate directly to the trust."
  7. ^ oof! I'm sure da building complied we fire regs. I'll no comment on da last bit!
  8. https://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/news/islands/1695972/fire-crew-transported-in-by-helicopter-as-fire-breaks-out-at-fair-isle-bird-observatory/
  9. It looked lik da fellow da made it happened to be on da boat wan night and towt he wid mak a peerie film. I quite enjoyed it. Da film is on da STV Player, and dir is an interview we da fellow too https://player.stv.tv/summary/all-aboard/
  10. Dis is bad news. I sounds lik aabody is OK. I hope da damage isna too bad. https://www.shetnews.co.uk/2019/03/10/fire-fighters-tackle-blaze-at-bird-observatory/
  11. Compulsory purchases and demolitions
  12. Yun's splendid George. Du obviously doesna lik single sentence paragraphs afore du writes it in blue under aa dy posts! A paragraph can easily be a single sentence if it's dealing wee anidder subject. Du should mibee brush up on dee knowledge o grammar if du's going to be makin a song and dance aboot idder folks writing.
  13. Twaree more details and pictirs here https://www.shetnews.co.uk/2019/03/05/34392/
  14. Sayin da councillors dunna hae ony friends is lik something an 8-year-old wid write! And Frances, if du's has concerns aboot corruption and nepotism, dir's more constructive places du can raise it den on here. I dunna work fr da SIC, by da wye
  15. Nae details yit, but I winder whit da 'masterplan" will end up being?! https://www.shetlandtimes.co.uk/2019/03/05/council-seeks-views-on-detailed-knab-plans
  16. To echo whit's been said, living on one of da islands has many pros and cons. Having to sync everything to ferry timetables becomes second nature but the time and expense can be a drain. And if you fancy a night oot in town den it becomes a bit of a logistical challenge!
  17. It's easy to bash da SIC but for every story about poor service or inefficiency dir ir many more stories about good service and efficiency. Folk quite rightly expect SIC services ta be well delivered with minimum fuss, and dat is generally whit happens. I'm head reason to be on da phone we 3 different coonty departments dis week, as well as getting me bins emptied, driven on splendid roads and been on a well-maintained ferry amongst idder things, and I only hae good things to say. Folk speakin about 'overpaid, lazy managers', 'councillors lining dir own pockets' and da lik is mostly a lot o moaning fur da sake o moaning.
  18. Blyed to read da place will be getting a spruce up, although naebody seems tae ken whit da money can be spend on. Ony suggestions on how £205,000 could be used tae improve da street?! https://www.shetnews.co.uk/2019/03/01/more-than-200000-for-town-centre-improvements/
  19. So da turbine size increase has had da nod from the council. Nae surprise dare, but I was blyed to read this "As well as the income from the community share of the project, Viking Energy has committed to paying community benefit of £5,000 per installed MW of capacity, which will provide an income of up to £2,285,000 per year for community projects in Shetland.” Dat's a fair whack of money, and da first time I mind seein a number. But it is "...up to..." which I expect will mean "....somewhat short of..."
  20. Dis might seem lik a daft suggestion, but could you no phone SSE?
  21. I towt I was reading a review fae last night's episode - a fish producer involved in "alleged illegal cartels"! https://www.shetlandtimes.co.uk/2019/02/20/grieg-seafood-shetland-raided-by-eu-inspectors
  22. Dis drones are provin to be a right menace! 3000ft is some height. It most hiv been a serious bit of kit! https://stv.tv/news/west-central/1435570-plane-involved-in-near-miss-with-drone-in-scotland/
  23. Peerier and more frequent is liklee a good thing!
  24. Anidder reason to buy fae Geordie Robertsons. Dir servicing service (!) is excellent.
  25. I've been tinkin to move energy suppliers after SSE recently hiked the prices. Dir seems to be lots of start-up companies offering very low prices den going bust, and some dunna operate in Shetland. Do any of you fine folk have ony advice? Oh, and I'm on da Total Heating Total Control tariff which fairly limits the choices.
