  1. Having recently visited da toon, I took some time ta have a look first hand again at the offending signs. My opinion is most firmly is that they are in keeping with the character of the building are a reasonable size and detract in no way from the visual amenity of the area. If planning require there removal may i humbly suggest we remove the planner/s who is/are pushing such drivel...........
  2. Is doo no bowt deesell an ipad yet spinner
  3. Shetland Broadband use the ethernet over power system in the broadband pilot area properties and usually have a few in stock. generally they work very well.
  4. Does anyone know if ANY member of the public objected to the sign on Da Thule bar or is this just our 'friendly' planners at it again. Perhaps they should have thought a bit more about allowing a huge glass building almost next door. A small T sign on Da Thule perhaps one of Shetlands most iconic public houses was far more in keeping with 'conservation' than that glass monstrosity of a bank. It would be fine in the square mile in its own context but not where it is. Someone needs to get a grip and sort this nonsense.
  5. Well gentlemen, these people were all democratically elected by the people of Shetland, and in many cases they have been re elected several times, therefore one must imagine that their electorate is happy with their performance. I do hope all of you voted, and if you didn't shame on you. You may also wish to consider putting your names forward at the next elections to see how you fair with the voters
  6. njugle did you cast a spell on aunty beebs great magics or is this just a photoshop lash up to torment me
  7. bleep bleep bleep bloody beeeb its not on the bleep bleep iplayer sorry this programme is not available to watch again - well i ain't watched it for the first time, only caught the last few mins. Dont suppose they would be amused if they were told sorry your licence fee is not available this year. all thats there is some crap about a clown in a camper van !!!!!
  8. ParaHandy Da iPottie had me rofl. Abosolute classic!! BTW when ir you startin ta sell dem? Crazier thing is you probably could sell dem fur a fortune, da flush button could also set of da classic mac start up chime, we built in straming itunes ta da bog. lol
  9. I am no expert on PC security being a 'mac' person, but would have thought that avg antivirus and zone alarm would be a good start but there are probably other better options out there some of which are even free. Hopefully someone with more savvy will be along shortly. I may have got this totally wrong but it sounds like you have just bought the computer in which case your retailer should have been able to advise you on this. It would alsohelp if you told any potential helpes what os you are uing ie is it XP, Vista or windows 7 as these may well affect the advice. Don't worry to much what you got should be ok for now but make sure there on and set up !
  10. Its not that long ago that Jobs(Steve that is) totally dismissed the idea of tablet computers.I think the iphone/touch success has regretably clouded his original better judgement. Although Apple did experiment with things such as the newton many moons ago. I have to agree with his original sentiments and will have to agree to disagree with spinner72 on the desirability of tablets. Each to his own. As a long time Mac user and follower of Apple I think we have been lulled into a false sense of security as Apple has for a couple of years now actually managed to make a number of fairly decent products without any real bloppers but we really shouldn't forget Apple's mystical ability to "drop the ball" at key moments. I doubt it will be atotal failure but I also doubt it will be a roaring success. It doesn't matter that much as Apple has such a cash pile as a company they could nearly afford to give the things away(but they won't as the one thing they are really good at is charging!!!!!) One thing that does worry me is that after watching the keynote all 1 and a 1/2 hours of it was I think its the least energised I have seen Steve be about a product, he tried to say how great it was but I think deep down he knows. This is a really bad Karma as before when they made muck ups they(he and others) seemed to really believe in the rubbish they were promoting and were surprised when it went horribly wrong. I only hope that Apple has just reverted to being the innovative basket case of old who we all loved and this is not something more disasterous. Just to finish who really knew(no cheating now) that Word was originally developed for the Mac?
  11. I also have a storm which im fairly happy with. In using wifi with previous phones SE P910 and 990 I have found it to be very heavy on the battery, given that battery life on the storm while ok is not brilliant, wifi especially if you use it a lot may make the battery life less than would be desireable? Saying that not sure if battery is same or power management improved in BBStorm2. If only we had 3G coverage it wouldn't matter so much !
  12. I am a vodafone user but Orange seems to be the only thing that works in Unst. Vodafone coverage is almost non existent except for a few hilltops. Vodafone signal also has seious black spots especially in and around Houbie on Fetlar. The road on the North East corner of Yell is also dodgy again unless at a few high points. As is the point where the road crosses the head of Bastavoe where there is a black spot. Will monitor signal more methodically from now on and keep notes for posting here.
  13. This probably means that it will now run at a profit, begging the question what was going on before !
  14. i see from vodafones website that they will be getting the iphone soon. Will certainly be up for consideration at renewal time and the storm may end up in a teacup
  15. North - im sure an enquiry to your local centre would give you the figures for previous years. Or to SRT would get you figures for all .They are not all as well used as you might think although there are exceptions, but its good at least one organisation is taking some adult decisions. I suspect there will be a few more which may have to happen in coming years
  16. I think theres a guy in Unst thats installed one and loads of the halls have them. The new proposed feed in tariffs make it even more financially viable at up to 28p per unit if your grid connected. You should get around 4k in a grant. Turbines generally work well but do need a back up for the odd calm days that we get.
  17. Also consider citilink - agents here are WDA parcels and are very good. Give stuart a call and see if he can offer what you need. For smaller stuff special delivery is the way to go but you have to go to post office.
  18. I must put a plug here for Stuart at WDA who are agents for citilink. They are the only ones in shetland I've found who actually offer a real courier delivery. Only downside is citilink can be expensive compared to othe couriers.
  19. Can I take it you are in favour of iran joing the EU as well then or are you just off topic. Although the idea of being forced to join the EU may well be be outlawed under the Geneva convention
  20. So it would seem I wasn't that wrong after all there are or would cerainly seem to be from the lack of pro europe reponses, very few if any reasons for staying in europe. But of course we will stay in as virtuallyall politicians see it as the gold plated gravy train which they hop on after the electorate have given up on them and kicked them out of office in this country.
  21. After the tories cast iron guarantee about a referendum now history, when will some mainstream party give us the opportunity to have our say on europe. If we had had the chance(and it was always going to be a longshot based around other countries stalling) of voting down the lisbon treaty, perhaps it would have given at least some of our politicians some backbone. I have been trying quite hard to find real reasons for staying within europe but am struggling to think of any. Please feel free to suggest some. I believe that the principal of a free trade area isn't a bad idea but it will never just be that. However personal experience is that there is more paperwork involved in intra european trade than dealing with virtually anywhere else in the world !! How can we have a situation where we are effectively governed by an unellected body composed in great of ex has been uk politicians and their families. Please note I have referred to uk only as it appears unlikely that any referendums will happen in edinburgh!
  22. in my humble opinion the whole consultation was so far off the mark you could drive not one but several coaches and horses through it. If any attempt is made trying to use this as a justification to make any changes which are resisted by communities , e.g. to close schools, I doubt if it would be seen to meet minimum standards set for consultation. There was a budget code allocated internally so the whole cost of the thing will be available via a freedom of info request. I think but am not certain it was the flea who asked for this to be done. Maybe not a bad principle to follow.
  23. i have used itunes on the mac since it first came out never had any bother with it at all. It does all I need and is FREE. If it don't suit, use something else but don't lounge around forums moaning about it. Instead you could perhaps tell us about positive experiences with different software. I don't use an iphone despite being what some would call a mac fan , but rather a blackberry storm. Now that they have finally got their desktop software for the mac sorted I'm currently syncing with the mac and hopefully all the songs in my itunes library should shortly be on the storm. If any one is interested I will let them know how things go. However this does not get away from the fact that there are far to many negative waves around here man.. yeah
  24. Why do we need a new civic centre, the capital program is already under ridiculous pressure is Sandy taking the Mickey ???? No doubt this feasibility study will cost mega bucks and for what good, all this humbug about giving the townhall back to the community ???? These people who we voted in seem to have totally lost the plot this time
