  1. Delting 6 - 2 Thistle, Ross Jamieson scored 4 for the Delts.
  2. What is the point in building Mareel which is supposed to help support musical talent in Shetland if you are going to reduce the funding for the future of Shetland's musical talent. I appreciate that cuts have to be made but to do this makes it more obvious that Mareel is just a waste of money. The council would be better off biting the bullet and amalgamating schools to save money. One thing we do well is music so it seems daft to limit the potential of future musicians to only those who can afford the tuition.
  3. It is not true to say Delting have not been pushed by other teams. Yes they did win the league relatively comfortably but this year but Whalsay, Spurs, Celtic and Thistle have all given Delting very hard games in the league and various cups. I think the gap has narrowed and that this was one of the most difficult campaigns Delting have had for a while.

  9. My Great Uncle in Australia rectently asked me if anyone in Wethersta saw the "Trowie Light" anymore. Apparently sometimes at night a steady light would appear at the top of the ness and moved own to the sea, disapearing in a bluish light as it entered the water. I have spoken to a few people who have seen it and remember it well. My dad has lived in the area all his life and thinks it is rubbish, it has not been seen for many years. I have notes somewhere regarding Wethersta folk enquiring about the light to Grobsness folk. The Grobsness folk could offer no explanation but mentioned seeing a similar light at near the Pitt croft in Wethersta. Perhaps the trow is too old now to be wandering around at night down to the sea with his lantern and prefers to sit in his knowe and watch TV of an evening.
  10. Christmas is a Christian event. Midwinter festivals were hijacked by Christians and remnamed Chriatmas to integrate Christianity into the pagan people's lives. Just as many sacred pagan sites were consecrated as Christian churches the early Christians did as much to overlap festivals, etc so that the people would find the new religion more acceptable. I supose that if the local people were used to having a festival then the early Christians would have found hijacking it a good marketing tool.
  11. I think that since the box is for Christmas which happens to be a Christian celebration then it is not too surprising for it to have some religious input as well as the gifts in the box. As has been mentioned already, the recipient has the choice of reading the book or using it to light the fire if they want. I don't see the problem with including a bible in the box as the recipient will not be forced to read and believe it before acceping the gift.
  12. Delting 3 - 2 Whitedale Whitedale were leading 2 - 0 at half time. Their second goal was scored by Duncan Anderson. He took a corner and the ball went straight into the net, how he did it I don't know. The game was played in good spirit and Whitedale gave a very good account of themselves, hopefully they will be fielding a team in the premier league soon. C'mon da Delts.
  13. Interesting post-script Tito, what does qualify one as a natuaralised Shetlander? I am born and bred but my wife was born South and has been here about 10 years. Our first bairn was born in Shetland but we had to go south to have our second. Does this make our first bairn a half-cast and the second a soothmoother? I dont think so. You came up at 9 months old which means you grew up here and must know it as your home. I think this makes you a Shetlander even though not through birth. I know some narrow minded Shetlanders will disagree as your parents may not have brought you up in a traditionaly Shetland manner and thet you may not have Shetland blood or birth. But what is a traditional Shetland upbringing? Many peaple especially in the last 30 years cannot claim to have anythinglike the upbringing their parents did or indeed their grandparents. Sorry for going off topic a bit. I have plenty of friends who are exuberant to the point of overly and very confident within their circle of friends but when put into a position where they could have to speak publicly they become very shy. I really dont know why brash, confident people lose this when faced with the unknown or something a bit outside their comfort zone. I personally can and have spoke up in public but that is not to say I enjoyed it. I do think here there is a feeling that if you put your head above the parapet then be ready to be shot at and many people would rather not be contradicted and made to look foolish.
