  1. It has been said that "Conceptual Art" is basically practised by those that can't draw. Maybe that's unfair! I am assuming that the latest eye-opening exhibition by Shetland Arts falls into that category. One exhibit shows an artist posing in a converted greenhouse wearing what is described as "wearable art." Tracy Emin's "unmade bed" made headlines some years ago and the modern art world has not improved significantly as far as I can see. This latest exhibition by Shetland Arts is presumably funded by us and is intended to make us think about things. I have thought about it and have come to the conclusion that if you want "wearable art," buy a fair isle joopy.
  2. All SNP supporters have now witnessed the second Cumming! Aka Margaret Ferrier.
  3. I agree with you yet again George, it has little to do with us. However that doesn't stop those in these isles who seem determined to highlight the whole thing, therefore encouraging more marchers and protesters and more chaos. The protest marchers should be pointing to affected communities worldwide, insisting they need to look inward to solve their murder rate problem. They need to change their attitudes and face the fact that they need to connect with police to take the gunslingers off the streets. The police and the community need to work together, the hoodlums need to be brought to book whatever their colour. And looking at the murder rate the main problem is with the black communities. That fact needs to be faced.
  4. That was put rather well George but it will do little to appease the protesters. The facts relating to the problem are of no interest to the BLM marchers and rioters. The black communities need to look inward a lot more to help resolve their problems, much of which they are themselves responsible for. They have more murders than anyone else. Very little in hispanic communities by comparison, or asian for that matter. Police trying to solve murders in their communities are often met with a sour silence during the investigation. This silence is certainly brought about by some suspicion of the police but to a large degree also brought about by fear of their own community and the violent criminals within. Without cooperation with the authorities those murderers will remain at large and the whole sorry situation will continue. All the murder and mayhem will be blamed on rascism. While other factors are to blame.
  5. I have to say first that I am all for racial equality, but: I have just been reading yet another letter demanding action regarding the number of black people being murdered across the globe, and the rascist issues involved. There seems to be little interest regarding the numbers of police officers who are murdered during the course of their working day. No marches, no placards and protests, nothing. It should also be remembered that in the US, 86% of white people are murdered by other white people, and 94% of black people are murdered by other black people. That is clearly not a racial issue, so perhaps we need another approach!
  6. I just presumed I guess Colin because you seem to have so much knowledge on the subject. What a shame though that you weren't around to show the budding agriculturists in Mossbank how easy it is to plant and harvest good healthy crops. There could have been such a different and happy outcome.
  7. Well Colin, if the private individuals are organising this sort of enterprise using their own cash, then perhaps they will find the enthusiasm to break sweat making a success of the project. The group from Mossbank were full of enthusiasm initially regarding the idea, and the SIC were convinced it seems by their devotion to the production of organic vegetables. However, the reality of the work involved in what can be a hostile climate, appeared to dampen that enthusiasm and encouraged the budding agriculturists to retreat to the comfort of the sofa. Im sure the SIC will be quite happy to see you set up a group to provide allotments provided it is privately funded. There is unlikely to be any protests from anyone. Go for it! I watch with interest.
  8. After a request was made a few years ago the SIC pumped a lot of money into the provision of allotments in Mossbank, near the old Fraser Peterson centre. There was just one person that that made an effort to do something with it. It was a complete waste of money, there was too much work involved for the allotment holders. They were not prepared to make the necessary effort to do anything with it. It is now an untended wasteland, so lets not bother asking for more council cash for this sort of thing, the cash may be needed elsewhere.
  9. JGHR it was a United Kingdom wide democratic vote as you well know. The same as the UK wide democratic vote to join Europe in the 70s. The vote to join Europe was also led by what seems to be now viewed by yourself as a wonderful forward looking Conservative government, happily accepted by Scotland and the rest of the UK. Mind you there was some weeping and wailing in the ranks then I believe by those who viewed the result as a disaster.
  10. Forecasts are notoriously unreliable, at the end of the day we will get what we voted for democratically.
  11. Well George! You really have addressed the issue I have mentioned. The welfare of farming livestock in the EU doesn't seem to be of great importance to the EU, as so many would have us believe. I aint no Tory but I object to people bringing up welfare issues re future trade deals as if the EU were fault free. And as I have pointed out, they certainly are not.
  12. Incidentally, all these people, manic lefties, remoaners and others determined to stay in the EU at all costs, need to look carefully at their arguments regarding animal welfare. It has been hurled around so often that post Brexit we will importing meat from countries which do not stick to the strict EU conditions on animal welfare. There are cries that we will accept this to make deals elsewhere. But hold on here, legislation on pig farming has actually been particularly slow throughout the years of EU control. EU legislation banning the use of pig stalls which is intended to increase profits, was supposed to be introduced gradually over a number of years since 2013. This legislation is still not in effect. In fact the only countries with a complete ban on pig stalls in 2020 are the following: Norway, Sweden, and the UK. We import pork from the EU, we should not be doing this until there is a level playing field
  13. You're being ridiculous here, of course I don't want crofters to be worse off. But as I said I have no idea what subsidy will be made available and neither do you. I was making the point that subsidies were here for sheep farmers long before the EU. I would ask in return, are you happy with the effect that EU fishing policy had on fishing communities all over the UK? Communities destroyed! Local boats driven off traditional Shetland fishing grounds. Do you think they don't matter? The UK farmers and crofters survived before the EU and I'm sure they will survive after, and perhaps better. I worked as a young guy for a hill sheep farmer in Wales in the 60s. He told me some years ago that it had all changed since I was there. He could no longer afford to employ people as he used to. This suggests the EU hadn't provided massive financial benefits to him.
  14. To continue: I was just making the point that subsidies have been around for a long time. As for the comment about subsidies to better off countries, well I was just making a point that these countries, paying much lower wages than we do can easily undercut prices. All this endless guff about EU subsidies is a bit irritating. All these huge signs you see every here and there, "Built with EU grants." EU grant assisted." "EU funded." that kind of thing! This brainwashes the population over time into believing that without the EU we would never have got anything built, anything achieved. I'm old enough but I dont remember huge signs pre EU all over the country boasting about this or that being built. There were no huge signs on the M1 boasting: "Built by HM government."
  15. Obviously JGHR I don't have access to government plans re future subsidies. I was jus
  16. JGHR seems to believe, (like many others), that agricultural subsidies began with the EU. That is simply not the case, these subsidies existed long before that. And EU subsidies to less well off countries like Romania hasn't done sheep farmers any favours here.
  17. Nice headline on Shetnews. "Shetland lamb and wool exports will probably benefit from new Japan trade deal once out of the EU." The farming industry was understandably concerned about this issue, but this deal would be Scotland wide. Couple this with huge benefits to Shetland's fishing industry, and perhaps some remoaners might think again. Just think, Burra fishermen might again be able to tow their nets in fishing grounds that their forefathers fished. With the present system they are forced from their historic fishing grounds by Spanish and French boats using hundreds of miles of gill nets and long lines. I wonder what the bycatch is with the gill nets? Let us remember that 93% of UK fishermen voted to get out of the EU, and for very good reason. Remember also that this wasn't just Scottish boats, this was 93% of the whole of the UK. This represented the cost of joining the EU and the fact that it had destroyed fishing communities nationwide for the benefit of foreign vessels, some of whom had already destroyed their own fishing grounds. UK vessels were decommissioned and burnt wholesale, while Spain received millions from the EU to exploit UK waters. This was the deal organised by Ted Heath and the Tory party with the connivance of Harold Wilson and the labour party. If the Tories took us into this disastrous fisheries deal, then surely they should feel duty bound to take us out of it. I keep hearing that the fishing industry represents only a small part of the UK economy, so offering it up for sacrifice is no big deal. Why then, is it such a major sticking point in any EU deal? Why is it considered of such major importance to the big players in Europe. After all, they certainly don't seem to think it is of minor importance. Why's that??

Now come on George, the interests of the Scottish fishermen is exactly the same as the interests of fishermen in the rest of the UK. They have a common interest in the health of the UK fishing industry as a whole. They aren't interested in division, please remember that some 93% of UK fishermen voted to leave the EU, for obvious reasons. Perhaps the financial side and the possible jobs created by Brexit is worth considering, the French, Spanish and Dutch certainly seem to think the fishing industry is of major importance. It's important to Britain according to the fishermen involved.

Well why should the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man get all the tax haven money? Bring it on! Never mind the morality lectures, if the the money's there let's have a slice of it.

As the expert on these matters Capeesh, why is the Isle of Man doing so nicely?

Now now Capeesh, we're getting a bit carried away here aren't we? Now Faroe has done rather nicely over the years and so has the Isle of Man come to that.

Perhaps George the Scottish legal system should be carefully looked at. I see the Top legal man Gordon Jackson, who so successfully managed to achieve Salmond's acquittal is now stepping down ad "Dean of faculty of advocates," the top position in the Scottish legal system. The reason being he is now under investigation for serious malpractice. This malpractice involved serious breaches of discipline including remarks made on a train journey, which outlined his intention to blacken the names of witnesses. He also seems to think very little of the famous SNP man he is representing, making several deprecatory remarks on his character. Yes George this is the top Scottish legal eagle, and he is already being investigated, but only because he was caught out on video. Yes George maybe all the legal systems should be looked at.

Perhaps so George, but I am just emphasising the SNP desperation to get into Shetland and the main reason why! I would rather they kept the tartan and its clan connotations where it belongs.
