That's fair comment George re both Gaelic and Norn, if we wish to go that far back.
Apart from that I have to commend you on your analysis of good grammar and the excellent example you gave, re "helping uncle Jack off his horse." or other amended grammatical version.
Hilarious! Thankyou for that!

Spelling IS important though George, call it nitpicking if you wish, but unless we uphold standards we will all be at the mercy of modern textspik. Dear God! The very idea is horrifying, and reading as a pleasure would become a nightmare.
Spelling of the English language is sadly under serious threat, the threat is real.
Too many of our citizens are happy to dismiss it as of no importance.
Mainly because they can't be bothered.

Claadehol got a reaction from Colin in Shetland Arts
It has been said that "Conceptual Art" is basically practised by those that can't draw. Maybe that's unfair!
I am assuming that the latest eye-opening exhibition by Shetland Arts falls into that category.
One exhibit shows an artist posing in a converted greenhouse wearing what is described as "wearable art."
Tracy Emin's "unmade bed" made headlines some years ago and the modern art world has not improved significantly as far as I can see.
This latest exhibition by Shetland Arts is presumably funded by us and is intended to make us think about things.
I have thought about it and have come to the conclusion that if you want "wearable art," buy a fair isle joopy.

Claadehol got a reaction from George. in black lives matter
I agree with you yet again George, it has little to do with us.
However that doesn't stop those in these isles who seem determined to highlight the whole thing, therefore encouraging more marchers and protesters and more chaos.
The protest marchers should be pointing to affected communities worldwide, insisting they need to look inward to solve their murder rate problem. They need to change their attitudes and face the fact that they need to connect with police to take the gunslingers off the streets.
The police and the community need to work together, the hoodlums need to be brought to book whatever their colour.
And looking at the murder rate the main problem is with the black communities.
That fact needs to be faced.

^^It should also be noted that out of 3,313 White people murdered, 2,677 were murdered by Whites. 2,925 Black or African American were murdered by Black or African American in the same period, and of the people found to be the murderers, those identified as White were guilty of 234 Black or African American deaths. The Black or African American offenders involved in these murders were numbered as 2,600. That means that 13% of the population were found to have killed 2.6k of themselves while the Whites, about 87% of the population, were found to have killed 2.7k of themselves.
Who's doing the most killing?
Who's killing the most of theselves?

Is stating facts and having an opinion not allowed in the council chamber or when talking to us plebs anymore? Do they all have to toe the line and say what they're told to say?
Stephen Leask is my councillor, he got my vote because he was the only candidate willing to put in the legwork and come to my door to try and win it in the run up to the election.
I didn't help vote him in to be a shrinking violet or cajoled into being silent by a council leader I've never even heard of.
Same goes for Ian Scott, I certainly don't agree with everything he says but we need people like him with the balls to speak their mind and ask uncomfortable questions, at the very least it helps spark some healthy debate.

Claadehol reacted to Ghostrider in Japan trade deal
Could you, would you have answered, had someone asked you in 1972 what joining the EEC could mean for Shetland's crofters?
.....and if you had answered, how accurate do you believe your answer from your crystal ball might have been judged in 2020?
Right here and now with this you are asking an impossible question to answer, the UK for almost 50 years has operated in a very artificial agriculture market, it will take time for the domestic food supply chain to adjust and settle in to its new business model, likewise the foodstuffs export import/export market will be similarly affected, mainly due to it requiring the UK to have left the EU before many trading agreements can be finalised, but also that some nations won't seriously negotiate deals before we have left.
What is beyond debate is that the UK agricultural market has be a depressed and heavily subsidy dependent one for the entireity of the UK's EEC/EU membership. That should not have been the case.
Much of that depressed state has been due to foreign imports (dumping?) from fellow EU states undercutting the market to such an extent many UK producers could no longer remain viable, 'imports' the UK was 'forced' to take under EU free trade rules. The difficulties in finding and maintaining export markets for our agricultural produce within the EU, whether that be the French hijacking and burning truck loads of meat or Eastern Europeans undercutting us, while the EU machine stood back and did nothing. The difficulties of obtaining non-EU export markets due to whatever trade agreement the nation in question did, or didn't have with Brussels, and finally the lack of support from Brussels when circumstances beset the industry that were outwith both its and the nations control. The UK's agricultural sector, and the Shetland agricultural sector in particular was heavily impacted by both the Chernobyl incident fall out and BSE, yet we had to ride it out best as we could, alone.
None of the above were supposed to happen, its not done what it said it would do on the tin in 1972 when we opened the can of worms.
Yes, there's going to be a bump in the road as we leave, and a stretch with potholes for a time as we go forward, but anybody that cannot see its worth it to allow crofters to regain a demand driven market for their produce, and make their money from the demand for and the quality of their wares, rather than be the amateur and grossly underpaid nature wardens who keep a few livestock on the side, the EU has bribed crofters in to becoming with subsidy cheques. Is, quite frankly, a subsidy junkie.
The EU, latterly aided and abetted by a Commie Holyrood has brought to crofters a regime of form filling and record keeping of frequency, detail and accuracy requirements only surpassed by those left behind by Hitler's Germany. Would crofters rather take the time it requires to measure, and access and record and compile, store and submit such detailed information on all they possess and everything they do, all just to get a relatively paltry cheque which can barely cover the hours and effort required to do everything necessary to ensure you qualify for it, or would they rather be out there with livestock and crops, producing whatever they can that the market demands and is willing to pay for to earn their dollar. To me its a no brainer.

Claadehol reacted to Ghostrider in SNP
What you 'get out of them' is a direct result of how much the UK/Scotland wants whatever it wants we have, how much we want whatever we have, and which side has the best poker/chess players with the balls for bluff and brinkmanship.
Nothing is ever cast in tablets of stone, everything is negotiable.
At the end of the day our mandate would be full independence in which case the UK would get absolutely nothing of ours whatsoever, that in itself is more than plenty to get their attention.
......and there's plenty of other tactics we can throw on the table to make them nervous. All it takes is a bit of thinking outside the box and creatively and add in a liberal dose of bluff.
Whatever we let the UK/Scotland have of ours would be a 'trade', and that 'trade' can be made to work our way with nothing more than us being more of a hard nosed SOAB than them.
To quote a line from a song, 'everybody else is doing it, so why the hell should I'. - Just because other BOT's, Crown Dependencies etc have settled for whatever they've settled for does not mean we have to as well. Yeah, sure as hell Westminster/Holyrood will try and force that option as the only option, but that where you make sure the lead negotiator you send in is the most stubborn, intransigent SOAB you can dig up and give them the authority to let rip.
Anybody who believes we'd have to pick an 'off the shelf' package deal as demonstrated by existing Crown Dependencies, BOT's etc, has been conditioned to follow the rules, not to question the rules, and to not believe the rules can be changed.
If we're going to go for increased self determination, we first and foremost need to exercise that will by securing the deal that works for us, not a deal concocted by others, otherwise the whole exercise becomes hypocritical, a mockery and a farce.

Claadehol reacted to whalsa in SNP
Your "common knowledge" is in fact, incorrect. Once upon a time, the Isle of Man was run in this manner but now the "Lieutenant Governor" is a ceremonial role and all domestic matters are handled locally. Indeed, the next Lieutenant Governor is due to be appointed by a local panel as opposed to the Crown as has been done previously. The UK government is responsible for defence and international matters.
If you are going to criticise the concept, I think you should do some research into the difference between British Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies, as well as the varying constitutions and levels of self governance held by each.
Furthermore, those are but two existing constitutional models (with variances across the individual territories). There is no reason why Shetland would have to copy any of them, we could adopt "The Shetland Model" which could be set up in a way that suits both ourselves and the UK.
The only factual thing you said is we are not Danish. We are Shetlanders and we have as much right to choose our own future as anyone else does.

Claadehol got a reaction from whalsa in SNP
Quite right Whalsa, and the main reason the SNP are so desperate to get into Shetland is because any chance of future autonomy can be quashed. This reason of course ties in with the fact that the dream of Scottish independence makes no financial sense without the oil and fishing money from Shetland. They need Shetland money and they know it.

Will dey mind ta include da bit inatween Tingwall an Weisdale in dir demands tho, dey better, ur dey'll be proven demsells ta be racist hypocrites.
So, how are you supposed to describe the financial performance of a profitable enterprise these days according to PC doctrine, I would suspect 'in the black' is going to have to go by the wayside very soon if all this crap gets taken any more seriously.

Claadehol got a reaction from Davie P in black lives matter
Same effect, (if not worse) on the victims Davie, and I would suggest the treatment of these Indian victims is a damned sight worse than all the rascism in this country, real or perceived.
I dont see any mass protests on this one, or the Chinese treatment of muslims come to that.
I remember going into a pub in Wolverhampton because my train was delayed, some years ago, everybody that was in there was black including the musicians. Everybody stopped talking, the band stopped playing, and it was made very plain I wasn't welcome. I remember sitting down in a pub in Surrey next to two black guys, nodded hello, and was told immediately, "we don't like white people."
Had that been the other way round it would have been a rascist issue.
I just changed seats.
There has been atrocious behaviour in the past by the white western population, the appalling tragedy of slavery, but let us remember the black leaders in Africa were quite happy to sell their own people. Some of these leaders' descendents are probably in positions of power to this day, there will be no apologies there. Nor will there be apologies from the Arab slave trader nations who sold a huge quantity of Africans.
The vikings traded in white slaves from Europe, so did the muslims when they had a foothold in Europe. These slaves were white!
I'm afraid I don't feel responsible for any of the slave trade, being white isn't my fault, and I wasn't a part of the trade, I wasn't around then.

Claadehol got a reaction from Urabug in black lives matter
Where exactly are we going to draw the line here? Are we going to consider banning that lovely hymn "Amazing Grace" simply because it was written by a slave trader John Newton in the 1700s.
Are we going to demonise those who endorsed this hymn, such as Judy Collins, Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklyn, Alan Jackson, Johnny Cash, and many more?
President Obama sang this at the funeral of a murdered Methodist minister some years ago. I don't believe he would have been too concerned about the hymn's history and he was probably aware of it.
Most of our citizens are completely unaware of the history of individual buildings and streets in our towns and cities. Maybe we should leave it like that, we have problems enough these days without highlighting the crimes of the last few centuries, and trying to absolve our guilt by needlessly changing street names.
Tony Blair apologised for the slave trade, None of the Arab countries or African countries to my knowledge heavily involved in this trade apologised for selling their own people. Some African leaders became wealthier than English nobles.
It was a long long time ago and it was a vile trade, but I'm afraid I do not feel responsible for any of it and therefore I don't feel the need to apologise.
