I would suggest a two step process:

    1) Revoke Article 50.
    2) Bathe in Brexiteer tears.

^ an interesting interpretation considering the recent UK wide protests about Johnson's attempts to by-pass parliament. I haven't seen much in the way of public support for Johnson, even in the right-leaning media?

But yes, a General Election would seem like the best solution

I prefer to vote for something, this policy free, voting to stop somebody else negativity is the biggest cop out imaginable.
How far the Liberals have fallen, no wonder they only have 4 MSP's in Holyrood if that's all they've got in the locker. What do they stand for nowadays? What's their vision? What's their message? That Tory coalition has stolen their soul.

Humblest apologies for repeating myself but in my defence you did ask...100's of affordable homes you can see all over Shetland and loads more in the pipeline for those Shetlanders who can't afford extortionate private rents or massive mortgages.
Shetlanders can go to University without having to pay for the privilege, they pay 9k a year in England.
    Built a new high school,
    Free prescriptions for sick Shetlanders,
Free personal care for elderly Shetlanders and then went on to extend it to those that need it regardless of age.
Bigger discounts on travel to the mainland,
Nearly doubled the free nursery hours for Shetlanders with young families.
Mitigated some of the Tory/LibDem welfare cuts like the bedroom tax.
This is a shortened version off the top of my head, there's probably more.

Nah, trying to trivialise it as normal procedure isn't going to cut it. It's a PM trying to close down parliament to force through a constitutional agenda he doesn't have a majority for. We should all be concerned about that, regardless of our opinion on Brexit.

And it's a 5 week suspension, not 4 days. Even allowing for conference recess, this is unprecedented.

Are you seriously trying to justify the Prime Minister bypassing parliament on an important constitutional issue because you think MPs get paid too much??

All Leave has is pre-legislative referendum over 3 years ago - off that back of they they have consistently tried to circumvent laws and democratic parliamentary processes to push their agenda through, an agenda that is now a distant relation from what was promised. To accuse people who wish to see laws and democratic processes observed as having an 'extremist viewpoint' is just nonsense.

So, you consider the freely accessible legislation, much of which has been on the statute books for decades and was discussed at length in both houses of parliament pre-referendumn, and the subsequent high profile High Court cases, to be "clauses hidden in the small print"?

I think this is symptomatic of one of the fundamental issues with Brexit - more column inches and airtime was given to blatant liars and politicians making undeliverable aspirational claims than was given to discussing the realities of the situation.

The legislative detail may not fit with the headline grabbing narratives of Boris' £35m NHS bus, UKIPs anti-imigrant propaganda or promises of new trade deals before breakfast, but if folk didn't understand the legal basis of the referendum, or consider the law of the land to be some sort of inconvenient detail, then perhaps there's a problem with how the information was presented to the public?

And if folk didn't understand the fundamental legal underpinnings of the referendum, then perhaps that provides even more impetus to make sure the detail is worked through in parliament?

I don't think you'll find many French, German, Italians, Danes, Spaniards, Dutch, Belgians, Irish etc etc saying their countries aren't independent, to suggest they've given up their independence to become members of the EU and that there's no difference between them and the nations within the UK imho is unbelievable.Unless of course Scotland remains in the EU who the UK government are currently desperate to get favourable trading agreements with. I just have to look at the likes of Denmark and Ireland (small European independent nations without the rich resources we enjoy),flourishing and having their interests protected and nurtured as EU members. The UK in comparison, as far as I'm concerned is taking backward steps with Brexit, harking back to the long gone days of Empire, becoming more anti foreigner and insular, not what I want for my kids to grow up with, sorry you disagree.I believe they've governed well, of course there are ppl like yourself who disagree, such is life in a democracy, people change their views, opinions and ideals all the time, democracy never stands still, I, for instance have voted Labour and Lib/dem in the past, thankfully we can express our views at the ballot box.or the opposite is true, their opponents are trying to use their stance on independence to undermine a genuine desire from Tom Wills to work for the benefit of Shetland.

    @Windwalker post above ^^this one..
They're governing the country right now as we speak, they're delivering all the things mentioned above and more, of course they stand for an independent Scotland, it's hardly a secret.
I do disagree with you and anyone else who tries to suggest that Scotland is some kind of thirld world basketcase economy who wouldn't be welcomed by the EU.
I find it amusing when they get accused of always banging on about independence by their opponents who never seem to stop going on about it themselves. I read the last election leaflets, it was all about stopping the SNP and independence, not a policy in sight from any of them.
You say they've forgotten to get on with governing the country but I can see with my own eyes the new houses and school being built, I know my youngest child has nearly double the amount of free nursery care my eldest got. I found out when I successfully quit smoking that free prescriptions meant I could get the expensive nicotine replacements without having to pay, every week I see university graduates from Shetland in the Times with great big smiles on their faces who unlike their counterparts in England haven't had to pay £9k a year for the privilege. I used to be unable to get a dentist, now no probs, any other healthcare myself and others I know have received has been first class, the list goes on and on.

I don't 'believe' it, I'm going by MSP voting stats, and news reports from the time.

You seem to be conflating whether parties supported the actual referendum with whether they supported the vote for 16 year olds

After the success of the introduction of votes for 16 year olds for the referendumn, the Scottish Parliament unanimously introduced votes at 16 for all Holyrood and local elections in Scotland in 2015 {source} I suggest you look up what Ruth Davidson said after the referendum - she was very open about how she changed her mind.

I suppose you could consider it to be cynical gerrymandering, or you could consider it to be politicians doing what they thought was the right thing and others retrospectively agreeing.

Ha! That's just not true! You're going to have to try a bit harder to turn this into a negative that you can lay at the SNP's door

The Scottish Referendum may have been the first (that I'm aware of) election in the UK that extended the franchise to 16 year olds, but it was done with cross party support.

Furthermore, many UK parties have supported the vote for 16 year olds for yonks, there have been many groups and political think tanks who have campaigned for it, and it's common in other countries.

There was plenty of discussion about it at the time, but it tended to be quite dry and academic - I think it just wasn't exciting enough to make headline grabbing news! Nor did it suit any particular party or news organisation - they were all engaged in mobilising and polarising their troops in an effort to gain a clear majority. Adding 'by the way, it's only advisory' to their slogans wouldn't have motivated folk into voting either way!

If I was a cynic I'd offer that the Brexiteer politicians and pro-leave media have been aware of the advisory nature of the referendum all along, but sneaked through with a slim majority and tried to rewrite and reframe the rules with an emotive 'will of the people' slant. The Tories trying to implement Article 50 without going through parliament, then being pulled up in the High Court about it, and the Daily Mail declaring the judges as 'Enemies of the people' is a good example.

It seems to have worked though. For example, just a few hours ago Urabug called me a '(friends with concerns about Brexit)' who is 'making up stories and stirring the **ite again' when I pointed to the legislation. Folk will believe what they want, particularly if it's backed up by misinformation from the media and less than honest politicians.

The alternative is that the media/politicians weren't paying attention when it was discussed in parliament, or hadn't done their legislative homework, which is feasible!

It was about the meetings between senior civil servants and the people who eventually made complaints. Sturgeon reported herself to the parliamentary investigation which is not what the court case was about.
So was the legal battle with the SNP or not?

Sadly, I think you're probably right.

There are Shetlanders who will still vote for UKIP or, if they were standing their brethren in the Brexit party, regardless of how woefully under informed those party candidates may be about Shetland or its specific needs.

I suppose that's democracy for you though, stupid people are allowed to vote, and they may vote for stupid candidates who will provide stupid representation.

That's why free university education, in any discipline, provides a net benefit to society, and also why some politicians oppose it.

If the election were tomorrow I'd vote heads Michael Stout or tails Ryan Thomson. I think either one would do equally as good a job at achieving the best outcomes for Shetland.

It was heads - Michael Stout got my vote.

Dat's wan wye o lookin at it, but naebody campaigning for Brexit was even spaekin aboot a no deal scenario at da time - not Boris Johnson, Farage or onybody else.

Among some o da things Johnson promised wid be in place wis a free trade agreement, tariff-free access tae EU markets, nae hard Irish border, £350m a week for da NHS, lots o deals we idder countries - it a lang list dat's been ignored or dey came to realise canna be delivered, and now folk are trying to say crashing oot on WTO rules has always been da plan - but dat simply isna da case.

Lookin at it anidder wye, if a political party was voted in on da back o a pile o promises dat dey ignored or couldna deliver, den we'd hae da chance o voted dem oot at da next general election. In dis case, Leave made a lot o promises dat dey hiv ignored or canna deliver but dey expect folk to sit on dir hands and let dem do whitever dey want.

So, a simple question... noo dat da (lack o) detail is clear, whit's da problem we checkin we folk to see if a No Deal Brexit is what dey want? If dey are, den nae odds.

And things change. Circumstances and plans aroond Brexit (and if we crash oot, Scottish Independence) ir significantly different noo fae da last referendum. Whit's da problem wee checkin if folk are still in agreement?

You'll be getting another vote in 2021 if you don't like the outcome, and following that, another one every four years thereafter .

If its good enough for you why do you suppose it shouldn't be good enough for them?

^^Work started on the woefully inadequate North boats in 2001, blame our former LibDem MSP Jim Wallace, he was in government at the time as deputy First Minister no less. Or maybe the former Scottish Minister for Transport Tavish Scott could shoulder some of the blame, did he do anything about it when he was in charge?
Do the Scottish Lib Dems have any policies? All they seem to do is sit pointlessly on the sidelines moaning about things they must've forgotten to do when they were in power.

Goldmans Sachs did an assessment on Brexit Britain which pegged the cost to the UK economy since the leave vote at around £600 million per WEEK!! Thats before we've even left!! Heaven only knows what it'll be if we go full on Kamikase with a "No Deal" Brexit and crash our economy under Boris's State Circus clown show.
I feel sorry for anybody who has to attempt to govern Scotland or any of the other devolved administrations when the crap hits the fan. Even though every single constituency in Scotland including Shetland voted resoundingly to remain in the EU that democratic cry has been completely ignored. (Now there's an advert for centralisation, funny how some who cry about it coming from Holyrood never bat an eyelid when it comes from Westminster.)
We'll have to deal with the dogs dinner the Tories have served up and face many many more cuts and hardships to come, unless anybody is fool enough to believe Boris, who only seems to worry about the city of London, will suddenly start worrying about your average Joe outside the M25 and increase the block grant the devolved governments recieve when the economy gets flushed down the toilet.

This poll of the Tory party membership is an eye opener. The Conservative and "Unionist" party couldn't give a hoot about the UK union, they would happily wreck the economy and see their own political party destroyed, all in the name of Brexit. At this rate Scotland won't have to vote for independence, the English nationalists look like they're going to boot us out.

It's interesting to note that the Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond is estimating that the immediate impact of a no deal Brexit will cost us £90 billion - in effect wiping out the fiscal headroom built up through years of Tory austerity. I should imagine he'll have to austed from cabinet in the next Boris / Hunt reshuffle for pissing on the hardline Brexit chips with that prediction.

It's good to see all the hardships the least wealthy members of society have endured recently will have been worth it

But the disproportionately wealthy Tory membership who will be deciding on the new PM seem to be willing to accept that, so long as we 'take back control'

Hey ho, bring back the spirit of the blitz and all that.
