  1. Of course, underneath it all Salmond is of the same mind as Cameron, Milliband and Clegg who want to see the end of the UK as an independent state either as a whole or in parts rendered up to the EU. There's no point in denying this reality.
  2. http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/finance/andrewlilico/100028115/scotland-outside-the-uk-could-be-an-independent-country-or-join-the-eu-it-cant-do-both/
  3. Independent Scotland in the EU ? That's a very fine oxymoron !! Shetland Peat , you clearly dont understand the fishing industry , verbal skitter to put it mildly It's a good laugh seeing you shot down in flames by ghostrider , but keep at it old chap . If the yes campaign had been about gaining a status similar to Iceland I would have voted yes. People with the initiative to set up private businesses and the people in private sector employment is what keeps the public sector alive .
  4. "I am not in favour of faceless buearacrats I did not vote for badly managing the affairs of this country at huge expense. Whats wrong with wanting a controlled immigration system that is equally fair to the entire planet as opposed to what is in place now" Sheland Peat , Note I said controlled immigration equally available for all to apply, this is also the UKIP policy , no where have they ever said there would be no immigration, they want quality migration, taking in people with the skills and expertise the country is lacking in. You once again sounded like an Establishment media drone, with a fear story " we would lose a huge chunk of NHS staff!" Nobody is advocating throwing anybody out, just halting uncontrolled migration from Europe and giving the rest of the world an equal chance. There are several other UKIP policies I am in full agreement with , the main one being a flat rate of tax for everybody and a massive simplification of the tax collecting system. As for a fishing industry with a complete new set of rules set by the nation state, foreign vessels coming in could be required to buy a permit for each entry, a rule that their fish is landed locally and that taxable revenue is filtered out of them through fuel sales and port charges.
  5. Shetland Peat , . The ball is in our court on this and we in the UK could be protecting our fisheries resource better and be making more money out of it if we were clear of the CFP and managing our seas ourselves. As an ex-fisherman whose livelihood was destroyed by the witless and corrupt policy makers of Brussels I know what I am talking about, and may I say politely that you don't. The markets of europe and the world wont stop wanting to eat our seafood if we manage the grounds at a national and local level. I also note you are just another drone who has fallen for the Establishment media's relentless campaign to discredit UKIP using any tactic they can. UKIP are fielding several women in the forth coming Euro elections probably on a par with any other party. I am not a racist, I can assure you, I have nothing against any people of europe either. I am not in favour of faceless buearacrats I did not vote for badly managing the affairs of this country at huge expense. Whats wrong with wanting a controlled immigration system that is equally fair to the entire planet as opposed to what is in place now ? European politics is corrupt and largely responsible for the Ukranian disaster. The liblabcon is 3 cheeks of the same ass. The SNP have stated " we will take our place at the brussels table" Its not independance in any shape or form. Just me - The only EU country waters that shetland boats ever fish in is Ireland and that is exclusively the pelagic fleet as they follow the mackerals migration south, the other places we might fish is Norway and Faroe, both of which run their fishing grounds themselves and work on bi-lateral agreements which protect the interests of their own fishing industry first. The CFP doesnt need changed , it needs scrapped. I hope if anything at all comes out of this independance debate it's that shetland gets autonomy just like faroe, I rather shetland as an autonomous region of a united kingdom with a Europe trade agreement and nothing more. oh and lets get rid of the royal family too while we are at it!!
  6. Well I wouldn't completely rule out foreign vessels catching fish in our waters . How ever the chance to scrap the quota system completely and introduce a management system based purely on fishing effort and fishing time in conjunction with an evolving system of seasonally closed or permanent closed areas would be fantastic. The european parliament is quite simply a big gravy train for the political class, entirely corrupt. The cost for each MEP is £1.25 million
  7. You didn't read much of the reply posts did you Paulb ? This loan helps modernize one of the key assets in Shetland's No.1 industry - A fishing vessel that catches and brings to shore fresh protein for human consumption. Fish. Shetland was built on this industry. The profits from the catching of this fish filters through the wider Shetland economy helping to keep a large variety of businesses and there employees going. Marine Engineering and electrical firms, net mending and wire equipment providers , fish buyers , mongers , filleters and their drivers, ice factories , janitorial supplies and general merchants shops. It is a simple fact of our geography and climate here in Shetland that if you or any other small holder were given this same amount of cash as a loan to develop land crops or some other alternative it would be impossible to bring to market even 1/10th of the value or volume of this fishing vessel and the loan would never be repaid .
  8. Your fairly right, don't expect politicians to sort our energy infrastructure ( or the way we consume it) any time soon. They have hijacked wind power so that rather than actually cutting any emmisions , it only serves to make the landed gentry richer. So if politics has failed, what about the ordinary man and woman in the street.? What about the hard core climate change doom mongers ? Should you not be leading by example and doing an Amish ? And why is the ice coverage on the American great lakes reaching the same record breaking levels that were recorded 40 years ago ?
  9. Perhaps it is a case that the masses who really believe the overwhelming evidence have not lost interest. But at the same time I dont suppose many have given up the modern luxuries that are considered the root of the problem . I mean if people were really concerned about global environmental catastrophe then I would have thought more people would be disconnecting their electricity and swopping the car for a horse and cart ?
  10. No particular point Mr Terra..., just a small story that I found interesting. Dropped it in here to see if it would regenerate the debate . It's not so busy on this thread these days. I guess most people have lost interest over the years...?

  12. Great fun , good way to clear a hangover, done it several times and once 60 mile North West of Foula Climbing everest could be considered idiotic or the triumph of the human spirit over adversity... For some , life without risk is extremely dull.
  13. From the above guardian topic "The rate of progress in development of foundation and installation technology has been slower than anticipated. " Wind farms have stood of the coast of denmark for 20 years and there are purpose built jack up ships for building offshore wind farms,
  14. http://www.theguardian.com/business/2013/dec/13/scottish-power-cancels-argyll-array-offshore-wind-farm So now that actual viability is being sensibly discussed, will 2014 be the year we will be told of the cancellation of the VE project? Followed by those responsible falling on their swords ?

  18. Well of course its better to try and contain it. I just thought mother russia with it huge wealth of natural resources would pay to clean up its own mess . But never mind the day will come where there is no where to hide. http://www.world-nuclear.org/info/Current-and-Future-Generation/Plans-For-New-Reactors-Worldwide/
  19. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-25086097 Amazing what this is costing to this day.... and who's paying for it "The cost of the project is being paid by the G8 nations, including British taxpayers"
  20. New Magnie at number 18 , how true that statement turned out to be !
