  1. I drove past the Voe Marina the other day hoping to see some Tirricks, (arctic tern), and was disappointed to see someone had erected a length of rope with flapping plastic ribbons along the length of the breakwater, presumably to scare them away, it’s very sad as this has been a popular nesting spot for many years.
  2. The Challenge 25 initiative is promoted by 'drinkaware' and run by the 'Retail of Alcohol Standards Group'. It is intended to be used as a tool to help determine age when young people are buying alcohol. If Mareel has decided to use the same policy for entry into the cinema then I suppose that is their prerogative, although possibly not its intended use. It is a little ironic that this person was then allowed to purchase alcohol at the bar without issue. Maybe a staff reshuffle could lead to a more balanced outcome, at least he could have gone somewhere else for a pint afterwards.
  3. Surely you meant, 'The Mareel staff are simply following a nationwide code to cut down on underage filmwatching'
  4. Anyone else got a gas plant joke that needs a bit of work?
  5. A lot o folk wir wye wi pick ups, but all da eens I can think o hae crofts. What wye can you tell if dir crofters or no as dey drive past?
  6. So...hmm...Oh yes I get it now, that means that the 6 million initial investment was only 75 days worth of overspend, let me see....that means we could of had nearly 5 mareels for a years worth. o well thats ok then
  7. If piping the gas to domestic households were possible why would it just be Lerwick, surely some of the rural areas that it passed through might benefit as well! Not that I think this would be achievable, it's just one of these things about rural areas. It doesn't have to be all about Lerwick.
  8. Looking through the report it seems that many of the proposed closures creates a travel time which exceeds the limit that the education dept have set themselves, and as a getout they are saying, 'Alternative transport options will be included in the proposal paper as part of the statutory consulation process', at what cost? I hope the councilors who asked for the additional information are happy with the outcome of the two week hiatus. These closures have little or nothing to do with educational benefit, Ms Wishart has publicly stated that this is a financial cost cutting exercise. The Junior High model works well in Shetland and was in place long before the council got its hands on the oil money (Mid Yell JHS opened 1967 Baltasound 1968) This type of education was afordable then! (I'm not party to the number of staff at education towers at that time)
  9. I know this might be a silly question but, Can Viking Energy still get 457MW from 103 turbines and stay within the max tip height of 145 meters?

  11. She was built as a bulk carrier and converted, the pipelaying end is actually the bow and she moves stern first.
  12. Sadly, the deeply flawed decision to close Scalloway Secondary is not just financial, but part of the grander plan to rip Shetland education apart. Hence the hurry, and hence the decision to let Skerries be; it matters less to "them" in the grand scheme. Try asking some of the people making these recommendations just EXACTLY what they have in mind for these "Hub" Junior Highs. Remember to ask whether the bairns will be able to gain certification in the full range of subjects. Try not to be reassured by promises of full consultation. I think we all know what that means.
  13. It would apear that the services committee members will be asked to close skerries secondary school next Tuesday, with serious consequences for this very fragile community, In doing so they will make a saving of around £73,000 Last Tuesday, the infrastructure committee decided to buy a second hand skip truck with 52000km on the clock for £79,500 Best value?
  14. AT, Do you know what power factor is? The power factor of an AC electric power system is defined as the ratio of the real power flowing to the load to the apparent power,[1][2] and is a dimensionless number between 0 and 1 (frequently expressed as a percentage, e.g. 0.5 pf = 50% pf). Real power is the capacity of the circuit for performing work in a particular time. Apparent power is the product of the current and voltage of the circuit. Due to energy stored in the load and returned to the source, or due to a non-linear load that distorts the wave shape of the current drawn from the source, the apparent power will be greater than the real power.
  15. Mind, we are spaekin aboot instrumental tuition, no da class music lessons, where dey also get ta learn ta play instuments. Most folk dunna mind payin fur dir bairns ta get fitbaa, trampolining, swimming an so on, even in quite big groups, an dat's available ta everybody. As Peerie Bryan says, dis needs ta be thought through. Dir folk spaekin as if dey wid make it unavailable ta wis poor sub-species dat live ootwith da central belt o Shetland. I wid certainly raider pay fur wir bairns ta get fiddle etc as ta no get da chance at all.
  16. My bairn has joost started fiddle lessons, and I wid be more dan happy ta pay. I hed actually hoped dat da introduction o charges (although dey obviously dunna cover da whole cost) wid possibly allow more instructors ta be employed, an more bairns wid get da chance ta take dem up, raider dan less. Dir's aye a waitin list at wir school. I hed also assumed dat bairns dat get free school meals wid get instruction fur free, which wid save furder means testing. Da idder thing is, if da folk are payin, wid dey be more likely ta encourage dir bairns ta practise, an value da service more, which wid have a positive effect on da music in da long term? I dunna keen, but it is a possibilty.
  17. I so agree. And the important thing is that we don't let the detructive proposals in the blueprint allow our communities to start fighting among each other, as was clearly intended. If we want Shetland to continue to be a community made up of many smaller communities, we have a duty to support that. If, on the other hand, we don't care if we are indistinguishable from any more urban settlement, by all means go ahead and destroy our rural communities. After all, we've had an "excellent" education, perhaps it doesn't matter if our children do not get access to the same. Don't listen to what the teachers, parents and pupils are telling you. All hail the Blueprint proposals. And of course, the statistics they give you at the meetings are bound to be accurate, because they say so. What more reassurance could you possibly want? Sleep well.
  18. We tried that one night but the ships officers were not amused
