What heartening news. There are 15 people with disabilities in Shetland with a guaranteed job to look forwards to... Well done Cope.. I will look forwards to meeting the new workers.. Grants of this kind really do filter down to the people that you and I know. At least in Shetland you know that the money will be spent on those people that it was awarded too. I have heard of cases where companies used the grants for other things, thank goodness that Shetland isn't like that, its small enough for everyone to care.

I am saddened to hear that, there are schemes in place to help, but it depends on your personal situation which we cannot discuss on here.
It is a catch many are in, myself included, I do not earn enough to run a car and enjoy the life I do now with my interests and hobbies, I am fortunate in that I can do without one and the transport network is better, but not as cheap. I also cycle which helps me, but cycling in Shetland needs dedication far beyond what I do.
 
I do hope your situation becomes better for you.

The animal may be soft and friendly, may have a lovely nature, but can still do harm to those who do not bounce as well as others if knocked over. Many elderly folk I know, although spritely, are in fear of being knocked over. Children are also subseptable to injury with being knocked over, it is because they have not developed the responses to save their vital parts in the event of a fall. Beaches should be for all to enjoy but also to be responsible on.

I have been absent for some years from Shetlink, but I have dusted off my old account to post in my capacity as a committee member of Transition Shetland.
 
 
We have been in contact with Ghufar throughout the process, he has been nothing but supportive of our plans for the glasshouse - what he said regarding this in the above post is fully in line with our understanding of the situation.
 
The discrepancy between the valuation conducted on our behalf and what Ghufar is willing to accept for the property is only one aspect of our decision to stop pushing forward with the project.
 
The valuation, because of a lack of comparable sites, was conducted using a reductive method, the low valuation was due to the apparent non-profitability of the site if used in it's current state. When proposing alternative development plans, the valuation would be different. This is a lesson for future projects when attempting to balance funding and costs, especially when the benefit will be overwhelmingly social.
 
In our research we received a strong public support for the glassshouse project, but this failed to materialise into active support when we needed people to come on board. We are a small group and saw our role as initiators, testing the project's feasibility and providing ongoing support to a new group of people which would have taken on it's practical development.
 
If this group had come forward we would have persevered in our efforts to find a way to purchase the building. This would be a challenge, but we are confident this would be possible, and we would have loved to continue this project.
 
 
As to the proposal to boycott a local business, we would seriously ask that this idea be dropped. At Transition we wholeheartedly support local merchants, producers and businesses, because it is our belief that building a resilient local economy a key in tackling the challenges we all currently face. We are completely against the use of the unfortunate state of this project to advocate a behaviour that is not in line with this aim.
 
 
We had always known this was an ambitious project, and we always understood that it may not have the outcomes that we desired. But it has resulted in a feasibility study and business plan containing research that can be used for future projects, and was a good learning process.
 
At the very least, we tried, and hopefully generated greater awareness in the local community of the massive challenges facing all of us in the form of climate change and peak oil, as well as some idea as to what we may be able to do about them.

Interesting to see "sheepshagger" getting so much attention.

It is a road side cafe for want of a better word. Due to their set up, they can deliver your "meal" at reasonable speed. The parking is good as well, I think that is part of the reason for its popularity. No where to park a HGV in town. The food must be OK, I have not seen any issues raised by any Health inspections as I have seen with one or two others in town.

I see and hear enough, perhaps more than the folk the council represents. I have met several of your present councillors on various matters and have had dealings with Officers. Being prepared to work into the establishment, understanding the way and how it works reveals more of the relationship between both parties. Without the Trojan Horse how would you expect to be able to change what is the "unchangable". Councils develop thick skins, but can be soft and vulnerable to change from within. Insulting folk with names that undermine what many of them do, especially with such a broad brush. However, some I have met have the mettle to stay to try to improve any way they can, others just bail out as they do not have such substance.
After all, all the "hate" that is extruded towards the Councils and its representatives are generally based of a few experiences, if you were to take every meeting between the two, the council and who it represents as a single figure of experience.
 
Yet however, a job no one else seems to want to do. The psychological side of that is one of great interest and shows sometimes how shallow folks lives can be. It verges up to a disorder in some cases, not many though.
 
Looking into how a council works and understanding that structure is at the present, the only way anything that seems wrong can be unpicked and reassembled into something that may appear to work better, though, as with the Criminal Justice System, it too is something that has grown many different layers. Some of these layers are quite important, others could be removed, however, due to current contractual agreements, the time folk within the council have to deal with things becomes less. The work load will remain. The way forward then is to lessen the workload, this falls onto how you can get the population to become less reliant on the council. In a county council such as Shetland, it has many responsibilities. If current changes within the health service migrate even more, its role will become different again.
 
If you are seriously going to change the internal workings of the council, you will need to be the Cordycepin. If that is how you feel about councils. Or stay tethered to your high chair screaming at the sweet as it constantly remains out of reach.
