  1. I'm not a royalist either, but why vote SNP when they declared that they wanted to keep Lizzie as head of state ?
  2. Amazing !! I suppose that independence has to start somewhere.. Wonder where they learned to thaw, heat, and serve..
  3. But, that's my point. Exporting to the rest of the Wold requires many types of certification. UK businesses have had it easy with the single market principle. Maybe it's time that they got into the real world.
  4. I would agree that there might be to much red tape in the process but, don't you think that it is the responsibilty of exporters (of all kinds) to complete the relevant paperwork properly before they hit the brick walls at the ports ? Bleating about it doesn't help if they are not properly prepared.
  5. I wouldn't say we were lied to, but anyone with a modicum of common sense would have realised that the fishing in particular (despite the rhetoric) was always going to be on the table. Don't you think that the current obstacles you quoted just might be temporary, after all, they work both ways. ?? Anyway, if they can't buy our fish, then we should start eating it ourselves.. Just remember that during the last little unpleasant interlude with Europe, the only thing that wasn't rationed was fish and chips...
  6. I wonder if anyone has ever considered a life without oil.? Here's a link for those who would want to see just how far down the road we are; https://www.worldometers.info/oil/ The figures shown are for 2016, but will work as a guide. I would guess that our current usage is accelerating somewhat and I would also guess that, as reserves dwindle, the cost of oil will also rise quite a bit. No more jetting off on foreign holidays. Little , or no, private transport. The time is coming when we will have to re-consider the things we now consider "essential". Looking like in the forseable future, we might be reverting to the practices of the past. Horses and sails for transport wool and cotton for clothes, water power for mills, growing your own food etc. Oh, and we could easily end up fighting over a handfull of rice... All this is assuming that we still have an atmosphere that we can breathe... We're doomed I tell you, DOOMED....
  7. There was many a 'pleep' of objection, and I think that you will find that the Gas Plant has a very large 'Peat Store' (?) on site. In fact, it is so large that it is possibly the largest single structure on the site, and it's right next to the main gate as well. Personally, I am mildy anti wind farm. Mainly because most of the direct benefits to Shetland have been siphoned off and are heading South. Additionally, we appear to have very little influence over any of it. Looks like a 'put up and shut up!' job.
  8. Burning fossil fuels is no different to destroying peat bogs.. Both result in pumping CO2 into the atmosphere.
  9. Or the damage caused raping the Earth for 'Rare Earth' metals tho go into the wind turbines.!!! Also, there is the damage (locally) to peat bogs that have lain undisturbed for centuries. Collateral damage to wildlife. etc... There don't appear to me to be to many positives either side of the argument.
  10. Yes, I know Ian as well. It's just a pity that the printed words cannot convey the full impact of their delivery. As for being "bullied, threatened or intimidated", I seem to vaguely remember a similar accusation being levelled against one of the participants some years ago. Leopards and spots perhaps.
  11. This might be a little off-topic for this thread, but it was discussed here earlier. https://www.shetnews.co.uk/2021/01/12/councillor-scott-relieved-after-standards-commission-dismisses-complaints-against-him/ So, Ian Scott has been cleared (by the Standards Commission) of the allegations against him made by Steven Coutts and Malcolm Bell. I wonder if he is going to get a public apology from either one of them after they, basically, made a false allegation, or do the "standards" only apply to those who question their "authority".
  12. Not enough information imho. Although it does appear that someone has got a grip on the ourbreak, and cases do not seem to be spiralling out of control. No one has yet provided any meaninfull information that can be used by the general public to make our own minds up as to where we should/should not go. There is also no indication as to who might have become infected or is isolating. Personally, if I am unlucky enough to catch a dose of this, then I will let everybody I know about it... I might be one of the small minority who gets a serious dose, or I might be one of the majority who shakes it off fairly easily but, I wouldn't want to be in a position where I could unknowingly contact or spread the virus. Russian Roulette anyone ?
  13. "Hoist on his own petard" maybe, although I do not believe for one minute the vitriolic anti-Trump rhetoric pumped out gleefully by the left leaning media. IMHO, they are just as culpable as Trump is for the whole debacle. The oxygen of publicity is fine up to a point, but it should be noted that to much oxygen is poisonous. America appears to be deeply divided, and if this is the case, something has got to break at some point. Like the Titanic (or a very large jobbie) it will break in two and sink.. As GR said, this has been a long time coming to a head. Perhaps it's not over yet ?
  14. Nothing wrong with posters holding extreme views. Everybody is entitled to an opinion. It's how everybody else reacts to those views that matters. I also think that Shetlink is a quite welcoming place. It's just that the occaissonal poster seems more than capable of rubbing people up the wrong way. Whether this is deliberate, or accidental I don't know. I simply just do not 'engage' if I can help it..
  15. "Yis indeed. I'm no sure whit da point of it all is - it doesna seem to be 'conversational'... mair lik an attempt to shut doon conversation with rambling aff-topic points and needlessly lang-winded, pseudo-intellectual, verbose language." Or, in one word... "sprootle".
  16. There are probably many parallel universes. Just depends on which one you want to be in...
  17. I wonder how many folk do not post here is case NulVoid decides to crap on everything by responding with the usuan barrage of garbage ? In fairness, there may just be one or two points of interest buried in there somewhere, but fom my own personal position, I prefer to skip his/her/it's entire post. Once, that is, after I have managed to scroll past a series of awful graphics. NB; Pretty pictures do not prove anything. Try reasoned argument instead. If I wanted to see pictures, I would buy The Beano... .
  18. Its freakin baltic out there, and a neighbour is being a right pain, as usual. Is there anything else going down? Yes, your copyright seems to have expired, or is out of date...
  19. George, I think you had better get an update on your meds...
  20. Saw this earlier. Item location is Wokingham and it is the only SITAMS item currently for sale on Ebay. Seller has a number of other items for sale and seems to be a dealer of sorts Would be surprised if these are the people you are looking for. NB; Nothing at all on Amazon . Unless there is a specialised outlet for this type of thing, I would guess that SITAMS is no more.. Anyone want to set up a business selling Viking Warrior models? Good little opportunity for sale to tourists (if we ever see them again)
  21. I'm a little intrigued, so here is some more... The Ebay auction was dated July 2018. A little ot of date perhaps. The domain name - SITAMS.CO.UK is not currently registed. Vectis seems to be an Auction House based in Thornaby (Cleveland ?). VECTIS.CO.UK was registered through DomainMonster.Com. There are no owner names. Did a quick trawl around for toy soldiers etc. Judging by the results I found, I would guess that whoever was trading as SITAMS has probably given up in the face of some hefty Chinese competition.
  22. Probably the SIC. Plenty of Tin Soldiers there.. PS; Sorry I can't help..
  23. tkstewart has raised some interesting points "Shetland Space Centre is being developed in partnership with Lockhead Martin - the biggest arms company in the world. They will be coming here partly because they anticipate little resistance from the local community." Is it not normal practice for business interests to perform some kind of 'impact assesment' on local communities. ie; 'what can we get away with ?' "Did anybody else find it queer the prize for the recent SSC kids drawing competition was a family trip to Florida? Seemed way OTT to me. I have been wondering why?" A trip to Disney World perhaps, or what about Cape Canaveral ? "Then the billionaire who was seeking a judicial review to challenge the building of a space centre near his land in the Highlands pumps almosts £1.5million into the Shetland project. He was concerned about the environmental impact. Surely he couldn't be supporting the SSC in the hope it prevents the Sutherland project from taking off?" Ah, a conspiracy theory. You might be right though... Follow the money.. "It'd be naive to believe the puff in the press about Lockheed Martin not using the SSC for military purposes. A new Cold War space race dawns, as the US Space Force attempts to counter growing threats from Russia and China. Lockheed will be at the front of this war, potentially making Shetland a bigger target for adversaries." It's called 'mission creep', and in some form or other, is to be expected. The same 'target' status existed when we had the RAF radar base at Saxa Vord or the US Loran facility at Sullom Voe. "Jobs are very, very important and likely to become even more so in the days ahead. It's reasonable to argue economic considerations should trump all else when it comes to this project but we should at least be asking ourselves long and hard if this is a rocket ride we want to be taking." Jobs are important, if you want one, but I would guess that a lot of jobs created would be quite specialised and require imported talent. As for 'we should be asking...', the 'we' part is just us 'little people', and we never get asked anything. Whatever decisions are made will just be dumped on us to get on with.
  24. I think that correct spelling is more important than correct grammar, and I 'hate' txt spk. The demise of both are probably a result of the general dumbing down of the education system.. Anyway, this isn't going to put any rockets on the moon.
