Hi Shetlinkers,
Many of us mourned the loss of Shetlopedia, and I was especially sad to see all my politics research disappear. However, I was able to recover a 400mb .txt file that contained every single page from Shetlopedia on it and have used that to rebuild the politics section that I had on the site.
You can access it here: http://jarlmedia.com/Home
I am of course ever interested to hear from anyone with additional content to add, mistakes to highlight or pictures to supply.
I'll probably come back with specific requests for fellow history buffs to help me identify!
Cheers
James
PS if anyone wants to help rebuild Shetlopedia let me know. I'm not interested in doing it alone as it's a massive job!

Can anyone beat me tonight?

The SNP have said at elections that if they got independence, Shetland/Orkney/WI would have a say on their own determination. Now they're kind of regretting that after Tavish made light of it.
It wouldn't make sense for them to say no. "If Scotland can, why not Shetland? Why not Fife?". Saying no would be ridiculous, and saying Yes puts them in an awkward position. It's great.

BT called said that they might finally be able to solve the problem I logged a while back, which is handy because:

But, to throw a spanner in the works, I just got a job in London so I'll be enjoying 60mb internet from January onwards...!

at the end of the day SERCO are there only to make a profit
Let me rephrase that for you:
at the end of the day nearly every single viable business is there only to make a profit -
I wrote a while ago that the reason I have not yet been to Mareel was that when I tried to book a cinema ticket on-line at Shetland Box Office I was unable to do so with no reason given........and yes there was money in my account.
And today I tried using a click-able link fro the Shetland Arts page to Kollifirbolli's facebook page. Did not work........just got a 404 message on Shetland Arts site. These people need to get their act together or frankly Mareel is doomed and that would be a pity.
Sounds more like a problem on your end. I've been able to book many things through Mareel/Shetland Box Office website with absolutely no problem. I haven't heard of anyone complaining about that.

It seems more folk are in favour, if we use internet sites as measures, than not.
Which internet sites?
The poll on here ("should mareel get the bailout cash") was not in favour. There are 19 comments on the story on the Shetland Times website so far today:
2 FOR
1 Neutral
16 AGAINST
http://www.shetlandtimes.co.uk/2012/12/05/councillors-approve-600000-mareel-package
Someone who is against something is more likely to make their feelings known. How many times do you EVER see positive comments on Shetlink or Shetland Times? Especially on here when people can be anonymous and moan about everything (while, of course, doing absolutely nothing beneficial to Shetland).

the best da isles an country folk can do noo is boycott the place an let da toonies pay for it.
If you take that stance, why don't the Shetland mainlanders refuse to pay for the ferries to Unst, Yell and Whalsay?

BT Speedtester says 2.06mbps, but that only tells half the story.
Taken at the same time:

Having been a gig promoter over the years I can agree with 4533 about the lack of profit involved!

moderators, i thought advertising wasnt allowed?
Why not? It's a local group promoting their promotion, let them promote it to the hilt! Good luck lads

Surprised your ping is so good for both.

Speedtest @ 17:15: 6.83mbps, 48ms ping
Speedtest @ 17:45: 1.57mbps, 517ms ping
Speedtest @ 17:55: 0.93mbps, 456ms ping
Sigh. And the predictable decline continues.

Sigh.
After my aforementioned dealings with BT I was told I would be phoned back today after sending them my results. Phone hasn't made a peep.

I eventually contacted BT after a series of terrible speeds. They told me to take speed tests at 7pm, 8pm and 9pm tonight to prove that I have bad results. But of bloody course, the internet has been fine tonight. The first night in absolutely forever. I am so annoying.

Reddit's BuildAPC has a wealth of knowledge about building powerful computers, and it's free.

I've had issues the last couple of weeks with extremely high latency in the evenings... I just tend to try and ignore it. But it means online gaming is out of the picture. Which is nice.
It's pretty much the reason I haven't bought Halo 4. Yet.

I remember in London I used to get 60mbps which would equate to about 2mbps download. I remember a 338mb iPlayer download was done ultra-quick. It was amazing.
Now this.
