  2. Actually, that's just the site that came up when I googled looking for the BBC article (which I couldn't find again quickly, given that I was posting from an iPhone) that it reposted. Never been on the site before, and never heard of it either. Now I'm on a PC, here's the BBC link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-12597097 ... You should perhaps examine your own rhetoric before calling me a 'denier'!
  3. ArabiaTerra, with regards to a few pages back, the economic problems with renewables are much deeper than what you have outlined, particularly in the differences in job creation between the oil and renewable industries. The influx of money from workers in Sullom Voe's construction and operation is a significant reason why Shetland's economy has prospered over the past few decades. The wind farm will not bring that kind of capital to the islands. http://www.thegwpf.org/uk-news/2548-new-study-green-sector-costs-more-jobs-than-it-creates.html This report suggests that renewable industries actually cost jobs, and echoes similar reports from other EU countries. While I think this is not a correct assessment of the situation, and the renewables industry needs to be recognised as a sparse employer in comparison with the oil industry, which by the nature of its model has always employed more people than sustainability would allow, I do think that this is important information, particularly as it is a symptom of the underlying problem in the way in which renewables are being approached. You are right that I am a AGW skeptic: I can't understand how anyone isn't... But that isn't a conversation for this board. In response to your latter points, I feel that the scaremongering, the hurry, the panic that AGW pressure has put on the renewables industry will lead to significant problems in the future. The only option is sustainability: plant a seed, and watch it grow.
  4. Thanks again oddtablet for your endorsement. Would quite like to know when you heard us?!! That looks to me to be a list of established acts, which we are not. Perhaps someday, but for the time being we'll have to pay our dues!
  5. I thought you'd read my letter! At the root of it: Renewable energy is by its very definition, not scarce. Therefore, cannot adhere to the "supply and demand" principles that underpin traditional fuel economics. I am in no position to suggest solutions to this problem, other than to describe renewables as 'intermittent' as opposed to 'scarce', and to suggest that the renewable industry's current dependency on government subsidy is a direct result of this problem.
  6. Having googled "fossil fuel subsidies", I still fail to see how the fundamental problems with renewable energy economics are being addressed. Renewables are not a panacea for the energy problems ahead. The majority, particularly wind power, are not true 'green' solutions. Trying to substitute fossil fuels with renewables cannot work, will create more complex problems for energy security, and is simply not sustainable. Being pro-renewables, it saddens me to witness the widespread blindness as to their appropriate use, particularly in their still early stage of development. To suggest a poor metaphor: The Viking Energy plans are about as much use to the future energy landscape as an old IBM running MS-DOS is to today's cybernetic environment.

  8. Hi Chris here from First Foot Soldiers. Yep, we'd definitely be up for a gig or several. Cheers for the recommendation, oddtablet. http://www.firstfootsoldiers.com/ mail@firstfootsoldiers.com
  9. I agree with James. Words are only signifiers of their meaning, not the meaning themselves. Therefore, it is the intent they are given that should be examined. Using the word in a throwaway manner is perfectly acceptable to those having the conversation, though only if they both understand the intent in which it is used. I would suggest that it is the responsibility of the offended person to examine their own understanding of the word, and then accept that words can have multiple meanings and intentions. And yes, my opinion is also applicable to so-called 'racist' words.
  10. Perhaps not living in Shetland and being exposed to Mareel 'groupthink' allows for a more rounded perspective on the matter. I agree completely with EM regarding boredom, and the 'nothing to do' argument betrays far more about the people making it than it does about Shetland. I agree. Much easier when you are far enough away to see it holistically. And from here Mareel looks like a ball and chain around a gammy leg.
  11. I'm interested as to whether the few pillars of the Mareel faith envision an anti-climax of sorts if their baby is ever finished?
  12. As far as I am told, El Pedro are no more, though Murray and Birdy are working on another band. Matador have been quiet for a year. The Red Show will give you diabetes. John Cage String Quartets and Sting's Dowland album all the way!
  13. Infiltrator, that white elephant wasn't anywhere near fat enough... I really hope that Mareel does not get built. I can listen to and read 'For Mareel' propaganda from now until 23/12/12, but it still is going to seem like a completely bloated, decandent, and stupid proposal! DOWN WITH MAREEL!
