  1. ... a bit short sighted ... that's not the question. Looking around Europe (except France and parts of Italy, those in favour of love & romance) the dominating problem is, that "Scotland is selling out its natural beauties!" Golf ressorts or windmill parks - in the eyes of the typical tourist from the continent - are nothing else but slightly different facettes of just one image ... Putting those dunes at risk, putting the peatlands of Lewis, Caithness/Sutherland or Shetland at risk is nothing else but putting Scotland's natural ressources at risk ... A single dune will not create one job, putting Scotland's natural ressources at risk will cost you thousands of jobs in the tourism business ... not from the US/Canadian section of "back to the roots" tourism but most of the European business. If you want to have a European component within your tourism business you should be well aware what you are putting at risk in terms of natural resources.
  2. ... where on planet earth is a ressort development which created more than five new jobs per bed ???
  3. ... as would do any of the old boats like CalMac's ex Suilven which served the Ullapool - Stornoway life line. Since she was sold to the South Pacific about ten years ago she is doing life line service there ... while Lewis folks are locked up in Stornoway ...
  4. After a lot of inofficial mails, questions, PMs etc. and a lot of discussion among the editorial staff of our websites we started the following question within the "quiz corner" of our forum today: Good luck for your googling ...
  5. Right, Njugle, but over there they had the great advantage that much of the area chosen was a designated Ramsar site and SPA. That, too, made it much easier to organize some sort of international "protest" and to spread the information on the continent so that visiting tourists could react by signing special petitions etc etc
  6. Well, the Rosyth - Zeebrugge link as planned by Norshukon was handed out to Norfolkline (Maersk Group) earlier today. Operations will start in February 2009.
  7. It's probably more fascinating when we take into account that Low himself did not speak the Foula dialect. As I said in the text on Shetlopedia quoting more or less his own words: He just wrote down what he had heard ... probably making some mistakes and so unwilingly adding to some differences in the two "dialects" which originally did not exist ...
  8. Well, according to Greenpeace, BUND & others there are actually 25 planning applications ... thereof two are developments by Danish companies ...
  9. No particular ... Look here for a website I normally use for my bookings: http://www.all-berlin-apartments.com/en/berlin/apartments/ Good luck! Note: Different from British sites they show a price pp/pn only and a "number of persons per flat". For the average rent you have to multiply both figures to get the minimum rent per flat per night !!
  10. Nevertheless, may I point to the fact that at least one source states that newly-released British secret service documents reveal ... As far as I do know the facts: i) No evidence from German sources entirely kept under German control until now (all published) ... ii) No evidence from German sources kept under the control of the former allies and published so far by the former allies or after being handed out to Germany and consequently being completely published so far ... Despite that I do have to admitt that some roughly calculated 15% to 20% of the surviving documents kept under the control of the former allies are never handed back to Germany (being consequently published) nor have they been published by the former allies up to now ... Lots of rumors but very few facts to check it out ... and compared with other events: The Germans knew very well about the disastrous experiments with chemical and biological weapons in some specific areas of the Scottish Western Isles as did the British about some comparable specific areas in the Luneburger Heide ... controled and managed by the Rhine Army for the following 40 years ...
  11. Nearly the same over here ... We do have the "Double-OO-Rule" ... from October to Ostern (Easter) you are risking your inssurance coverage in case you are involved in an accident and being still on 'summer tyres' ... It's not statuory ... by law you are forced to change tyres "in wintry conditions ..." only but in fact the inssurance companies will fight against any case that happened below ' +8°C ' and you are still using your normal 'summer tyres' ... (according to standards of the tyre manufacturing industry)
  12. Well, that doesn't explain what or where Bjaurnie's Dale/Barnisdale/Barnisdael actually is but it fits perfectly with the explanation given on the DSL "BARNISDAEL, n., in phr. ```to tell a tale from barnisdael and doun' --- to tell it from beginning to end, with all particulars'' (Sh. 1866 Edm. Gl.). Known to Sh.3 1933"" Must be a phrase particularily known in the Northern Ises ... ... giving Edmonston as the one and only reference ...
  13. Your point, breeksy. Another thing may be: Since Orkney has its well promoted World Heritage Site "The Heart of Neolithic Orkney" a lot of search requests for Orkney are more specific ... aiming at Skara Brae, Ring of Brodgar &c directly ... that's at least what I can say, when I do compare that result with research requests for our own Scotland website ...
  14. Nicely spoken, Njugle, but for what is it really standing ... helplessness or lack of accountability ??? For the rest I absolutely do agree with your comments on David's reactions ...
  15. ... agreed, Njugle. That "xenophobic thingy" and its different use in different contexts was the only reason why I did reply ... over and out
  16. Cool down, sheepshagger. First of all it was nothing else but a reflection about what was published about Cantoneese eating habits and their royal interpretation on other shetlink forums ... missed your comments there. And yes, thank you for the chuzpe of reminding me of my jewish ancestry ... Massel tov (Jiddisch not Hebrew)
  17. ... it is simply not neccessary to destroy the Kames !!! Ever thought about this, David? ... or do you want to risk the Shetland environment for a (may be) profitable period of less than 10 years?
  18. Not knowing who will judge on your "assignment for uni", be aware of the "White Ladies" within the Celtic/Gaelic context ... No personal expierience at all ... so far ...
  19. Cats, dogs and rats ... probably too much work for a KFC ... they might leave that for the family run Cantoneese Take-aways ... but from time to time you should count the horses in your garden ...
  20. Two very important questions, sheepshagger, but I would suggest to the Mods to split them up into two different forums/threads. The first (use of EU-funds) has not neccessarily something to do with the second (VisitScotland concentrations) and I'm afraid that further discussion will end up in a mass if both of them are mixed ...
  21. ... support your local fish & chips shop ...
  22. To me it is not the question of - whether or not the "protesters" stood for election as councillors or ever having been councillors ... or - whether or not the elected councillors are qualified to do the job. The only remaining problem is the fact that under the present situation one body (the council) is allowed to transfer its intentions/political will, the resulting actions and the included risks to a "third party" under their absolute control (the trust) ... ... including the possibility to alter the statutes of the said "third party" in case it is not fitting to their political intentions as council. I dunno say that it was intended or hat this was the only reason why they acted in the way they did ... but it is possible ... and no-one must wonder if the whole "windmill handling" leads to some similar thoughts in the public. There is nothing against a "qualified" minority on the board of trustees of let me say 25% + 1 vote but all the rest ist questionable and I'm sure it will be questioned ... Especially with regard to the windmill project it would have been more suitable to form a special development company ... guaranteeing the whole development costs (defined as maximal agreed loss) up to Xmio £ out of the council's household. Putting the whole development risk onto the CT without any limitation but leaving the decisions up to the same councillors who want to build "their" monuments is far beyond any kind of being politically correct ...
  23. Flaming Mo, you are probably right. Nevertheless I don't see a prob, because David was the only one who sticked to the flag ... and did answer the quesions whether we do like his answers or not. He might have personal interests but lobbying/fighting for such interests is no shame. What is by far more interesting is the question why the Council did transfere the risks to the trust ... They transfered the the risks but they are still acting as councillors ... They wanted the new Museum and they voted as trustees in favour ... They want the windfarm, they tranfered and will vote as trustees in favour ... If they would have declared their interests according to Scottish laws they should have not voted on both the matters, they should have declared their interests but leave the decission to the remaining two independent members. That's all Ten or 22 councillors at the trust's board ... where is the difference, when none of them sticks to the rules ? ... no reason to blame David for anything ... @David: Be sure that I will join into the "the fight" when the results will be published on the VE-website ... BDW: David, the VE-2005-website promised a lot of details due to be published in 2006 ... by now there are neither updates nor any additional information ... looking from abroad that really "dis-qualyfies" the whole approach ... but that's a different problem ...
  24. Absolutely agreed ... ... but may I humbly ask you to have a closer look at the decisions of the EU following their notifications ... without going into the detailes: The EU Council agreed before any penny/cent was paid ... and that makes the difference.
  25. I'm well aware, sheepshagger, but I'm sorry: You didn't follow up my posts. I've already said that they sticked to the rules and made their notifications according to the rules. We both may mourn about the fact that neither mine nor your representatives didn't notice that ... but that's a completly different thing !!! Alas, sheepshagger, we both do know that Tavish is a politition ... and fighting for the voters we both would probaly react in a similar way until it's proved by those Brusell officials that we are wrong. That might secure our next votes but that doesn't say anything about the fact whether or not it's the best way to get the probs solved. The prob is not to make some noise in the islands own universe, the state of art is to join into the tunes of a well known orchestra ...
