  1. You are never going to be able to please everyone. Sometimes there is little point in trying.

I've seen parkour a few times, just by happening upon it. Mainly south, but once up here.

It has always been great to watch, there are some really skilled people out there. And I can honestly say that none if the people I have seen have been in any way disrespectful nor were they a nuisance. I have only seen people do parkour where there has been plenty of space - I can't think that there would be much joy in trying it on a narrow pavement next to a main road.

Personally, I think it's great. It gets the kids out and about and active and it's cheap. It can also be amazing to watch - both my middle-aged self and my senior citizen mother agree on that.

  2. Some may not have the funds to leaflet everywhere. You talk as if they all get money to campaign. Election expenses are generally paid for by the individual or/and their supporters, all of which has to be accounted for and declared within a set time for public scrutiny. Making a choice to vote on the ability to produce and deliver a leaflet is daft, it shows the lack of understanding. Many candidates have produced web sites, blogs and facebook sites, they have also grabbed the media.

Some may only leaflet where they or their agent think it will do most good.

The poor show is normally the public, who cannot be bothered to vote.

I have always voted (the one exception being in the referendum for the scottish parliament - I was off the island and despite requesting a postal vote, never received one), and have always, until this year, had a selection of leaflets and/or people along the door. Still just have the one leaflet and no-one along the door.

In the information I have seen from the prosective candidates (which I have had to go looking for) there is a huge amount of pussy-footing around the issues - not making it clear what their stance on hot topics really is. I'm finding it really difficult to find three people to vote for in my ward as a result.

It's little wonder that people can't be bothered to vote, when candidates can't be bothered to ensure that people know what it is that they stand for. Having said that, I will be voting - and contrary to your very bizarre idea that I am making the choice based on who leaflets (considering I have already stated I won't be voting for the one who has), my votes will be going to people that haven't. But maybe only two as I'm struggling to find the 'least worst' out of the remaining candidates standing.

  3. Indeed I did read your other thread. Strange to assume I didn't as I referenced it. And a donation of a box of chocolates is hardly 'getting involved'.

Getting involved would be to go to meetings or having discussions by telephone or email to look at ways of addressing the issues. Obviously the community council see it as a positive thing!

  4. where you will find the highest quality products at sensible prices, unlike some others in the isles.

I do like Foords chocolates, but I have to say your response in this thread and the motorsport club thread are making me reconsider buying them.

Maybe (here's a thought) instead of being negative about the other things going on in the isles, you could try getting involved to ensure that what you see as problems are considered in advance?

I would have thought an Unst-based business would have seen the track days as an opportunity rather than something to complain about. And why name Yell (and then change it to Cunningsburgh) as an alternative, if you see it as such a bad thing?

  5. Seeing as the transport is to and from the Brae Youth centre, at a guess ... the Brae Youth centre.

So, not a very good guess then!

I think the collection and drop off point for kids in the North Mainland is Brae Youth Centre. I'm sure i read in the Shetland Times that the gig is at the Gulberwick Hall. Looks like a great line-up!!
    :)

Haha, yeah - maybe I should rename myself muppet... oh, but it's already taken :D

  6. I think much much more information is needed before anyone can make a real judgement on this. For example - we depend on the UK for the majority of the goods sold here. We rely on what is a reaosnably priced postal service. Our lifeline ferry service is subsidised. As is our air travel.

If we stayed with the UK - would our nearest ferry landing be Newcastle?

Really, it is MUCH too simplistic to ask the question at this stage without more information on the implications.

  7. It's awful for the schools affected - employees, pupils and teachers - but I do really believe that the SIC are having to face up to the fact that cuts need to be made, and of course they need to look at all the options.

Personally I think it's crazy that Skerries still has a high school for two pupils. I'm led to believe there are more high school age children on Fair Isle than there are on Skerries. Maybe they should start campaigning for a High School of their own...

I think there is a lot of unfounded fears about school closures. I have spoken to children that go to the Anderson now instead of Scalloway, and generally they seem quite happy with the situation.

I don't see the need for Northmavine to have three primary schools - there isn't a big distance for any of them to travel to get to any of the other schools in the area.

The situation in Yell is quite different though - there is quite a long single track road for the kids from Cullivoe to travel before they get to the main road. But I believe that the nursery children go to mid Yell, so maybe it's not that big a deal really?

  8. funny da council couldna give its staff the day off for the royal wedding last year but gave there staff wednesday off?

What utter tosh. The SIC have a set number of public holidays, one of which (every year) is the day after Up Helly Aa. If they chose not to have a public holiday that day, they would have to have it another day instead. Whats the point in changing it? All they would acheive would be to raise the hackles of the many staff that do get involved every year.

The Royal Wedding is a) completely irrelevant to Shetland and B) a one off which would mean increasing the number of paid public holidays to the staff. If they wanted to, I'm sure they could have taken the day off work using their own holidays - not THAT many people would be so interested.

For the record, I do not live in Lerwick and I am not employed by the SIC. Nor do I attend the Lerwick Up Helly Aa. But Lerwick Up Helly Aa is a huge draw to Shetland, bringing people from all over the world. It's a high point for tourism at the time of year when other places within the UK struggle to attract tourists.

  9. They certainly should be sterilised!

If they are so mentally unstable and mixed up then we don't want their offspring polluting the general population.

They should do this with gay/lesbian people also.

Oh, and while you are at it, all heterosexual couples (married, co-habiting, dating or just one night stands) should also be sterilised, to prevent the creation of such mentally unstable individuals in the first place!

  10. Peacocks are going into administration, so i assume the cafe will stay open, unless coop come with another idea.

Not necessarily. They are in talks with a prospective buyer, so it may still go ahead. I guess it's a case of 'wait and see'.
