  1. It might interest you to know that at the last election (May 07), both Maurice Mullay and Robbie Leith both got more first votes than Jim Henry. So who got in, Jim Henry, because he got more 3rd, 4th, 5th preference votes etc. ( http://www.shetland.gov.uk/elections/elections2007/LerwickSouth-audit.html) The point is that he was very few peoples first choice for councilor. That doesn't make him a bad councilor, not does it make the unsuccessful candidates views invalid. That's just how it goes sometimes. This by-election was triggered by the death of Cecil Eunson. When he first stood for this ward, he didn't get elected either. But he didn't just give up, he fought on, and was elected 5 year later. Democracy is an ongoing process, not an occasional event.
  2. I keep catching myself referring to the windfarm as the Viking Energy windfarm. But then I remember they are only half the entire project. So the extensive consultation exercise only related to half the project. The assurances and guarantees only related to half the project. As for Scottish and Southern, we have heard very little. Then I begin to wonder what the other half are thinking about, and I discover I have no idea what Scottish and Southern Energy are thinking or doing. I wonder when they will make public statements about their plans?
  3. (** MOD EDIT ** - created the quote for you ) Company house records for Viking Energy Ltd show that the total share capital raised so far is £1000. 4 private shareholders have put up £100 (ie. 10%) of this. David Thompson owns 25 £1 shares. This makes him an owner of 2.5% of Viking Energy. If the headline grabbing profits (which I very much doubt) are £25m per year, then David personally stands to gain about £625,000 a year in dividends. Not bad for a £25 stake. If this was a straightforward business, with no public money involved, great, nice work if you can get it. Unfortunately David Thomson also appears to be a council employee, ie. paid by public funds, working on a public project which will personally benefit him to the tune of £625,000 a year if the projects own figures are to be believed. No wonder he works so hard, and is so enthusiastic about the project. He is knowledgeable and talented yes, but there is also a clear conflict of interest here. You've got to ask yourself how this has come about? Did the Shetland Aerogenerators Ltd. directors want to do the project themselves but the council jumped in and offered this sweetener for them to hand it over? How do their other companies fit into the picture: Viking Wind Ltd and M D Developments Shetland Limited? Were other members of the Shetland public offered the opportunity to buy shares at a knock down price? Something isn't adding up here.
  4. Transport: Increase transport services, especially to rural areas Current system is workable if you work 9-5 Useless if you work part time or don't want to spend the whole day in the town More bus shelters - waiting in force 8 gale in driving rain on muddy verge is no fun Make more imaginative transport - dial a ride schemes, community taxis, small mini-bus style busses. It doesn’t have to be all about huge (50 seater?) busses How about free bus and ferry transport for all - save a fortune on expensive ticketing systems and accounting, encourage more use of public transport. Tourists would love it. Encourage more people to leave the car at home. By allowing more mobility to folk, more folk can take part in work, leisure, education by able to get to the place where most of these things happen - da toon. Money Get the councillors off the various Charitable Trusts. Being elected councillors should not automatically make you a trustee of money which belongs to everyone in Shetland, not the council. Lets have proper elections for trustees. Roads How about a 20 mph zone for all of lerwick. Less bumps and accidents. Safer streets, less wear and tear on roads. How about a serious commitment to the environment? On the one hand the council supports a big windfarm to reduce CO2, on the other they fly half way round the world on jollies producing thousands of tonnes of CO2. I love the idea of paying mileage allowance as an inverse proportion of your engine size, bigger engine - less per mile.
  5. Whit news about the giant rabbits that escaped into previously rabbit free Papa Stour? Is it safe to go there noo? Jist how giant is giant? Sheep sized, coo giant? I'm worried.
  6. Remove hard drive from PC, it's the one in the inside which is about 5" wide, 1" high and 6" long, with no slots in it. Remove screws from hard disk. Remove bits: shiny platters for coasters, 2 super strong magnets. Case into bin (not sure about recycling options). Data pretty safe. The case itself is very strong, so pinch bar may be better bet than 14 lbs hammer? Some older disks have glass platters which explode pretty spectacularly on impact, so watch oot hammer swingers!
  7. It's a matter of trust on both sides. As a hitcher you could get picked up by a complete nutter, conversely you could be an axe murdering Daniel O'Donnell fan with bad breath, and the driver finds out too late as you whip out old chopper whilst humming Spanish Eyes, then breath all over them. Seriously though. I have hitched thousands of miles in Europe and North America, and the only real problems I ever encountered were 2 drunk drivers, and one postie who hadn't slept for 2 days due to a surplus of speed and coke in his system. He drove me through the desert to Las Vegas (like something straight out of Fear and Loathing, which I unfortunately read only after the event. I won't even go into what happen IN Las Vegas.... Biggest risk was four or five occasions when people drove straight at me forcing me to jump to the side. I suspect the motivation was fear. "There's a hitcher, I bet they are up to no good" kind of thing. Personally, given how safe Shetland is, I would pick up hitchers anytime. But that said if I was hitching I would understand why women wouldn't stop.
