For those who cited Sweden as an example of how to deal with Covid...
    https://www.businessinsider.com/sweden-admits-coronavirus-strategy-underestimated-strenght-virus-lofven-stefan-2020-12?r=US&IR=T
"...We are far beyond 100% of capacity in intensive care. We are approaching almost double the number of available spaces..."
"...That was the country's second-highest number of monthly deaths on record, surpassed only by the country's worst month of the 1918 influenza pandemic..."

I believe absolutely in freedom of speech and the right to protest. As Voltaire is attributed as saying, “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”

Yes I am indeed claiming that "Black Lives Matter" has been allocated(?) to a particular group/ideology". It is a well known global movement and as far as I'm aware, the "...lives matter" phrase was not commonly used in other contexts - until recently, and in response to BLM.

And no I did not claim that anyone using "All, White (or any other colour)" is racist. I refer you to my previous post.

In my experience, people using the "white lives matter" or "all lives matter" tend to be on the right of politics and use the phrase as an objection to BLM. It is absolutely their right to do so and to hold those views. It is the mock naïvety of folk bandying the phrases around and pretending they don't understand that the phrases have rightwing political and social overtones that I find tiresome. I'm sure there are people who don't know the context, but I suggest contributors to this forum are not among them.

If this is directed at me, I assure you I have singled out many groups for support over the years, generally because I feel those particular groups are treated unfairly.

Blackface has had it's day. Much as I dunna condone it I dunna tink laws and bans irna da wye forward. Dir is very few folk I ken dat are actually racist, and labelling and mibee criminalising dem for being oot-o-step we modern tinkin winna help. Much better tae educate folk, explain da context o blackface and let folk mak dir ain minds up.

Careful when you say 'we elect them' on the bass you describe. I, for one, don't elect them on the assumption they're going to be talking 'pure baloney'. I value the integrity of elected officials, as do most people I discuss politics with.

Regardless, Cummings wasn't elected - he's an employee of the government, and like other high profile employees of the government that have been found to be in breach of lockdown guidelines, he should step down or be removed from his position. I suspect that the reason Johnson hasn't sacked him is because Cummings is the brains behind Johnson's bluster

    @Ghostrider.
The argument that drove Brexit in large parts of the UK wasn't there's "too many Europeans" it was there's "too many immigrants".
The immigration system the Tories are putting in place to pander to these voters blocks immigration for certain jobs to ALL nationalities, not just European ones.
There's a lot of people who believe, rightly or wrongly, that immigration is a problem, being tough on immigration is a vote winner in large parts of the UK, unfortunately that doesn't help us in Shetland or Scotland attract working age, tax paying people to do what is deemed "low skilled work".
Another negative we're seeing now is we're even losing skilled workers, by pandering to this "immigration is bad" narrative we're making it less attractive for them to come and work here.
One great irony of this whole debacle is the current Tory Home Secretary Priti Patel's immigration plan would've prevented her being the current Home Secretary, by her own admission there's a good chance her Ugandan parents wouldn't have qualified for UK entry.

I totally disagree. We don't have the talent in sculpture that is required for the project, and you want the best talent available from anywhere, not just local. Most of the people complaining don't want any money wasted on art, but it is art money it can't be used for other services as some folk think. There is definitely a need for more art work around the streets and hills of Shetland. Look at any other country.

Ryan has always been very vocal as a councilor  and speaks a lot of sense. Beatrice is hardly ever heard. The whole brexit carry on will make all the difference to who wins. The fishermen hate the SNP because they want to stop brexit. Loads of non fishermen want to stop it, it will be interesting.

Ancestory has a lot of other information apart from family trees that can flesh out family history. I had a look on it a while ago when they had a free access weekend  and found documentation about my grandad and his brother getting their skippers tickets.

I have a subscription to Find My Past which I mainly use to look at old newspapers. They have digitised copies of the Shetland Times up to 1911. You can enter an individual's name or a place name and it will come up with any relevant articles.

It shouldn't matter how many. If one female wants to go out in a squad why shouldn't she.

It's very sexist and traditional. An awful lot of people don't want to change it, women and men. My own opinion is women should be in squads if they want to.

The committee have always said that they don't ban women, they can't it would be illegal. They just say they never been asked. Remember a few years ago 2 women asked to go in the Common Ridings in the Borders, they took the organisers to court and won what had been a male exclusive privilege. I'm sure the same would happen in Lerwick if any woman pushed it through court.

There is no other agenda here apart from that of the EDL thug.

Well done the courts for jumping on him and good riddance.
