spookily enough,my cousin has done the same as Stuart...though he is now stranded with some (long suffering) community in Canada. He also boasts of being an excellent sailor...though the canadian coastguard, and the local fisherman think otherwise.Perhaps its a well known syndrome (I feel a competition coming on...) He has also, over the years come up with grand schemes and lays claim to many "successes" ....though strangely enough no one else sees them in quite the same light. but seriously,i think there is a problem in that people like Stuart and my cousin, don`t quite see the world in the way we do. at its best it is eccentricity,at its worst,it causes upset for family, friends and people they work for,and sometimes there are even worse consequences.....

will not work but officials cannot ?? I am sure other businesses spring to mind. I do not want to be a party pooper...because we need jobs, especially in rural areas, but what is it with administrators of public money. (in two parts because it would not let me post,my post any longer??)

unfortunately, looking back on this thread, just over a year ago I suggested this would all end in tears. Mostly because it never made any economic sense to me...who knows nothing...but also to people who work with fish. Also the set up at Vidlin, was mightly large, very quickly. In the "old" days a business had to be set up slowly, building up in increments. Nowadays, with huge public grants, investor capital etc business seem to overeach themselves....but i suspect its a case of making a killing for a few people when money is pouring in to the coffers. What I do not understand is how us Joe publics can ascertain among ourselves that this scheme or plan

i agree, take a long visit here in winter. i have had many people say "oh great i would love the peace and quiet"....until they have lived here,in a village,on their own,in the winter. that said i moved here 14 odd years ago..never regretted it for an instant...but i love home, books, and a very very very quiet life...now if only i could get one!! and i moved here without visiting first...yes i know..pot..kettle..black etc etc

They do not have right of entry,if they have some evidence to suppose that you need a license (detector van, view through window of working TV) they can go to court and get a warrant....they don`t do this without being really sure (or so other forums leave me to believe) As they don`t seem to use vans up here (?? )It seems highly unlikely that they would go that far. I do not have any objections to the license in general...if you use a service ...you pay for it,however other countries appear to have better systems ...fairer, for paying for public service broadcasting.....as for the quality of it...well thats a whole new thread!!

we do not have a TV,and i have always objected to constantly having to prove that we are NOT committing a crime. After all,we don`t call into the police station every week to tell them that we have not murdered anyone this week etc. eyc Following intimidating letters,I contacted my MP. That and a strongly worded letter(not rude) seemed to do the trick. Recently they were up in our village,at local shop, asking after people, one a friend who a few months previously had died. I informed the guy that i did not have a license ,so if he wanted to speak to me about it here and now that was fine,BUT he had no right of entry to my property and I left a letter on both my doors denying them such right. He said I was not on his list. I have become very stroppy on this subject after i heard the tale of a friend who paid for a license(despite not having TV reception) because she felt vulnerable,on her own,in the house after having a baby. I listen to BBC radio constantly and use BBC sites,as such i would be willing to pay a smaller fee for the use and continuance of the service....which is excellent for the most part.

"KOYAANISQATSI" wrote I think what Righter meant by suffering at the hands of others is in reference to persecution on a slightly higher and more personal level than getting a few pelters for putting together a poor quality attempt at what appears to be some self glorification venture. quote] exactly...thank you. criticism of this degree, and I`m sure we can do that without being rude or personal, does not in any way compare to what might be a lifetime of being judged. prejudice, can affect your relationships, career, housing and health. I have re read the article again, and it seems to me that nelson is making the common mistake of confusing same sex couples with pedophiles. This is only inferred, not stated,so i might be wrong in this view. Surely Stuart you can see that this point is not only his opinion but is factually wrong. Again,Nelson is entitled to his view, but objecting to it can not be regarded as the wrong reaction to take.

Stuarthill wrote ""The extent to which you find yourself being upset by any person or event is the extent to which you make yourself a victim. " Some people do not "choose" to be victims,it depends on what has happened to them in their life. If you had continually been on the receiving end of hatred, abuse and prejudice, because of your race, colour, sexual orientation or indeed religion, then you would react very differently to someone who has not suffered from these. Stuarthill wrote "Every one of us can control our reactions and to the extent that we try to place blame for the way we feel onto somebody else is the extent to which we surrender responsibility and elect to be a victim. " again see above. I can only assume Stuart that you have never suffered at the hands of others or have the sort of personality that can shrug these things off (I suspect the latter) But it is a mistake to assume that everyone has the same inner or outer life as yourself. Blaming the "victim" is a cheap shot. Whilst I fully agree with you that Nelson Smith has the right to air his views(and no doubt has his own frustrations at what he sees as the persecution of his own beliefs) you cannot be surprised that people are disgusted/angry. If people choose to report those views to various authorities that is also democracy, and they will only be taken up by the authorities if they are views expressed in a way that break the law. Whether such laws are right is another story (or muckle poll) Again I say, bringing out such odious opinions is the only way to pick them apart. We do not have the space or time here to look at the belief systems of those people who think the bible is literal truth (at least those bits each individual group chooses to pick out and believe)but we can say from a logical point of view that they are wrong ie a good parent is a good parent is a.... in spite of their sexual orientation, financial situation, size of their body, colour of their skin etc etc

this is going to end in tears..... i`m confused about the organic status...are there two sets of standards? How can we trust "organic" labeling if a production system fails one set ie the soil association, and yet gains its status elsewhere? As for the money put in.....we need to start a book on its collapse date...or am i being too cynical?

just a pedantic note to add....you have the right to home school your child..but you don`t even have to teach the "basics". there are no rules, set down. the eduucation act says something like ...efficient education suitable for the ability of the child. I was a home educator for several years.
