  1. Maybe you shouldn't be allowed to cross the road without a responsible adult being with you? I don't find that funny...Noo come on Crunchie, it was a peerie bit funny
  2. I bet they even have an officer, who dreams up the names of new officers
  3. If your worried it may cause concern, discuss it with a friend first and see what they think. As your no doubt aware there are a few trolls on here who are sitting glued to the screen waiting for something to pounce on! Then there will also be folk who's views will differ from your own and will have a reasonable dialog/discussion, which is what forums are for.
  4. You could be right, but I wonder if this has ever been looked into. There must be other councils who have found solutions to problem with the maintenance of lights. Our council have not been known to find the most cost effective solution in the past. Back to " if I was a councillor"
  5. I imagine companies like Siemens aren't too keen to share the expertise required. Given how unreliable these things seem to be, it makes more sense for them to have the maintenance contracts than to provide relatively unprofitable training. It's a circuit board, once installed, I'm sure they could carry a spare so the faulty one can be sent south if required. It has to be cheaper than having to pay groups of folk to come up here to constantly fix the lights. The cost of bringing these companies up here is likely to be considerably more than training someone local. Your not a seat polisher by any chance are you?
  6. I'm sure BT stands for "Bloomin Terrible" Any other suggestions?
  7. Unfortunately our council with all it's vast staffing levels, still need to bring up teams from south to carry out repairs. As I've said before get rid of these seat polishers and employ folk who can get out and do the job. Surely someone could be trained to maintain these lights locally ? Back to topic. Noo if I was a councilor I would take a long hard look at every position in the council and have a bloomin good clear out. In my opinion many of these jobs do nothing more than create additional work. We need staff out doing jobs, not sitting in offices, building their own little empires.
  8. If I'm correct the SRT offer a discounted price for those who buy an annual card, they don't charge more for being different, nor do they offer facilities or special treatment to card holders. Any member of the public can book the same facility. The difference is a discount if you sign up for a period if you can afford it. SRT card holders do not get their names put up on a wall to remind us all how special they are, nor do they get invites to special functions. It's just a different way to pay. So there is a distinct difference. If there are already folk who volunteer their time for free to Mareel, which helps reduce running costs, then perhaps this should be recognised in some way as well?
  9. A small popcorn is £1.00 that will require you to buy 250 of them before you break even. Of course you do get a quarterly news letter as a bonus. I wonder what the news letter will consist off as this information will apparently be special and not generally available to "non freinds" or it has little value. As for free use if the green room. Could this not be better advertised for hire if it is so available. The whole thing smacks of those with plenty of cash, getting a better service out of a publicly founded facility than those on tight budgets. If I hand over £500 I might get invited to special events! I suppose it will keep us riff raff away from the cheese and wine. I have supported Mareel as a public facility, but I don't agree with this type of "membership" where folks names are plastered over walls as if they are more important to the arts than those who can afford to visit occasionally. Is it any wonder the term "arty farty brigade" exists? I'm not against the principal of "freinds" but perhaps this could be those who offer time and assistance at events to help keep the running costs down. That would involve anyone regardless of financial status. I would have little problem in seeing a list of friends on the wall if this were the case. I think the whole thing needs a rethink.
  10. Whit I want tae ken, is kin I git an e-pipe
  11. Yeh, but, you get 10% of the price of popcorn !!!! Wow!
  12. Well said. You would think these folk could only recieve one station on their radios. If you they don't like it, re-tune or switch off. Simples! Radio Shetland has reared many great presenters who have gone on to do well. It's great to hear "weel kent" voices on major radio and television programmes/sports etc. What makes it local and special is the variety of presenters, the fact there are a mixture of local and non local voices. The occasional mistake or fit of the giggles is the best bits about it. The presenters all do a good job sometimes under difficult circumstances. As for Jane, well she's just a star. Some folk really need to get a life and get out from behind their keyboards a bit more often. Wouldn't it be great to stick them behind a mike for a night and see how they get on! They might then appreciate how difficult it can be.
  13. Sorry gafynandrew, I was watching Up Helly Aa and this is the first time that it didn't keep buffering. Although a nuisance to some it is great for people unable to be standing in the town in this weather who still want to see the procession and by the tweets they were receiving has to be a great way of promoting Shetland right round the world. Hope de programme is now downloaded
  14. Interesting, I've always found the best approach is to deal with the cause!!
  15. It's such a shame the weather is soooo bad,but I'm sure everyone will make the best of it. Let's hope it calms down a bit for the processions. Hope everyone has a great day/night despite the weather.
  16. Ha ha ha ha ha! Oh boy that made me laugh and cheered me up on this miserable day
  17. Oh well, it was a little silly for me start the topic then. I have only just had a big break from Shetlink because well, I was a little left out as some topics were either one-sided or a complete mess. Yet anyway, the only thing that has affected me in the gales is that the bird table in my garden blew over (luckily no bird was stuck underneath). Keep posting Crunchie as Shetlink needs more folk to get involved and don't be put off with the folk who sit behind their keyboards waiting to pounce on any topic.
  18. Not sure what your trying to achieve here ? In my opinion the Up Helly A committee has once again gone about things in the wrong way, but I can understand their desire to do what they can to ensure the fire festival runs smoothly and is seen as something that is spectacular, not the drunken carry on some can turn it into. With modern technology, people can be posting their photos, clips etc within seconds and these are often available world wide. So it would be irresponsible of the committee to do nothing. Perhaps a reminder to squads would have been more appropriate, rather than what seems to be another issue which will be difficult to police. Unfortunately the committee have come across as spoilers of fun rather than guardians of the festival. Developing a site to encourage people to put up material, which the world can veiw all the possible negative antics squads and others get up to, is in my opinion not a sensible approach to the issue. Challenging the committee's actions would be a better approach.
  19. If you meant something else, then say it, as it reads, if anyone comes to Shetland, gets paid for a job, they should pay for the services. Like the rest of us.The inference there is, that these folk you talk about do not contribute like you do and are possibly different. I find it a little odd for you to be saying such a statement. As expected Pete you take things out of context to meet your argument. But to ensure I don't get sucked into a debate with you and off the topic, like you usually do with most threads, I'll let you think you must be right and not contribute further to this thread. See Pete you win again. You must be so proud.,! Bye!
  20. That is just sh1te. I have done work on in Shetland, I have used the services, you gonna send me a bill for those services. I pay general taxation I pay towards the NHS Or is this another generalisation saying that travellers do not pay tax! Shame on you for suggesting that. Pete, first point. Don't ever try to put words into my mouth and twist what I said. You are well known for this and to be honest I see you as nothing more than a troll. Second point. Why do you try to turn everything into an argument. Are you really desperate for attention that negative attention is better than having none. Third point. Is my concern regarded the suggestion that they were being supplied with a skip. I just want to ensure we are all on a fair playing field. Fourth point. They may well be contributing to services, but no one else is getting a free skip, if that is the case. Fifth point. Read my first post on this thread. Now let's wait until you turn yet another thread into your personal have a dig at folk. And once more do not attempt to twist what I say to suit your trolling activities and constant judgement of others.
  21. No more than I'm concerned about the loss of rural skips and the problems that is causing. I don't think we should be paying for them to get skips for the rubbish they generate ? If that is the case, when we can't get the same service. Nothing to do with race Pete, just fairness. If any travellers or anyone else are coming to Shetland and carrying out work, which they are being paid for, then they should be paying for any services provided, like the rest of us.
  22. I'm never keen of trial by hear say and Internet, but if these people are causing bother, the police need to be informed. I would find it difficult to believe that the council would provide them with a place to park and a skip, considering they have removed skips from us who pay our rates. But mind you nothing this council does surprises me any more.
  23. What the CCTV should be able to do is tell if a car crossed the crossing at the same time as a pedestrian, which I believe will happen more often with zebra crossings as against those showing a red light. Not sure though if the proposed crossings will be covered by existing CCTV cameras. The 20mph zone seems sensible but will require a lot more policing, particularly at night when cars are cruising around. Speed bumps do not slow down the dafties, they see them as a chalange. In my opinion the return to zebra crossings is a backward step, which could result in more accidents and does little for those with reduced vision. The proposal for one at the bottom of church road gives me most concern, due to the fact you are on it before you can see if it clear, particularly if it's moved further down the road. Plus it's used by large numbers of school children and elderly folk. I suppose time will tell, hopefully I will be proved wrong.
  24. The cameras are monitored by the police in the police station, what kind of licensing issue do you think there could be. Obviously they will have the proper licence required as this is what the cameras were installed for. At a large cost. Surely catching folk on the cameras, after they have offended was part of the expected use, in addition to stopping crimes etc.
  25. For some reason can only see first page of the report, can see all the plans though. Does nothing to convince me that zebra crossings would be a good alternative to pelican or even puffin crossings. If you took the cost of providing all these reports plans and no doubt consultants, the lights could have been repaired by now. But that is never the way our council works. They frap around the issue for as long as possible, end up with a scheme that will cost considerably more and still not resolve the original concern. Then once they realise their fix didn't fix it, spend more of our cash putting it right. Get rid of half the staff in the council offices and put more workers out sorting the problems. That what the report should say!
