I agree that the current American Notebook's weekly format is spread a bit thin. How about some sort of ex-pat column with a few folk taking turns to write from different parts of the world?

I've never used the Firewall on my Mac and its connected to the net for hours each day. I regularly run updated anti virus software and never once has any problem been reported I connected my Mams PC to the net for her, and before I could get the firewall switched on it was infected.....in a matter of minutes

In a recent MORI poll 54% of people said they would accept new nuclear power stations being built if they helped fight climate change, although 80% 'thought renewable technologies and energy efficiency were better ways of tackling global warming'. This comes before Labour begins its review on the future of energy, which is bound to be an exercise in lipservice. Its fairly obvious that we're getting a new generation of nuclear stations, which will be sold to us as a 'green alternative' Sadly this is just not human nature. People will always just want more. I dont think you will find many of the population willing to sacrifice there own standard of living to cut down on power usage. In the same poll, '76% thought reducing energy through lifestyle changes and energy efficiency was better'. How many of these people will actually be willing to change their lifestyles when it comes down to it. Its the same principal as the NIMBYs in the wind power debate. Everybody bleats on about how its the way forward, as long as they don't have to make any sacrifices themselves

Apparently 800 people applied to live in Fair Isle after an advert was placed by the National Trust (who own the island) and four families have made it to the shortlist, according to the BBC News website. I wonder how they decide on the winners Maybe they could send the rest to Unst, or repopulate St Kilda. Hang on, after writing that, its maybe not such a bad idea to recommend Unst, Fetlar or another depopulating island to the people who didn't get through. Hmm......

I probably won't be here. I haven't been out in a squad for years. When the actual day comes, I kinda wish I was, but I don't have time for all the squad meetings 'n' stuff for during the months beforehand. I think Up Helly Aa is a bit of a laugh and nothing more. There are certainly folk who take it very seriously though. But I can't see how you can fault dressing up, getting foo, setting fire to a boat, being driven around Lerwick and dancing all night. Or is there something about tradition and culture or whatever that I'm missing......

Does that mean you're being serious or not?! Surely a radio station broadcasting only to Shetland isn't looking for "mass appeal", it's looking to appeal to Shetlanders, which I don't think it makes a particularly good job of. Njugle, do you really believe that by reflecting the music and culture of Shetland, you won't appeal to more Shetlanders. I don't mean all fiddles 'n' Fair Isle ganzees. There is plenty of Shetland related music which would fit into the current SIBC format.

I can't figure out if you're being serious or not. It's virtually impossible for any band without the support of a large record company employing a pro record plugger to get a song onto national radio. However, many regional radio stations actively support music from their catchment areas. Take Jim Gellatly on Glasgow's 'Beat 106'. He has actively championed many unsigned local bands and is a key figure of the Glasvegas music scene. Beat 106 plays somewhere in the region of 3hrs of local music every Monday to Thursday. SIBC playing local artists 4 times a day makes up for a tiny fraction of their output (I would do the maths, but its too early in the morning) Since this thread began, I've asked quite a few folk if they would listen to SIBC more if they played more local music. Everybody so far has said yes

I agree. There are certainly plenty of local characters who would be up to the DJing job. A couple of hours in the morning isn't going to cost the station too much, and it would increase the audience, and therefore advertising revenue, by a considerable factor. And I'm sure the current presenters could do with a lie in. Who do you think would be a good local breakfast DJ? Smirk? (although he might be a bit too 'Gooooooooooood morning Vietnaaaaam')

I've noticed that every now and again that, in the Google Ads block on the left of this page, Shetland has been offered for sale on eBay. Does this mean I'm going to be made homeless, or sold into slavery? What are we to do?! And who owns Shetland anyway? Maybe we could club together and buy it back. How much do you think we should bid?
