Ian Selbie should get his own column. My heart sinks on a Friday morning if he doesn't get a letter published. In fact, make him the editor

Maybe the Unst salmon farms can rebrand as 'salmon sanctuaries' for the sake of the nature tourists. Punters could sponsor their own salmon and get news/updates as to how they're doing. There's probably more money in that than selling the disease ridden sea lice hosts

Judging by the posts on this thread, I see most people think we should have more local music featured on the radio. I've been toying with the idea of setting up a streaming audio internet radio station for a while now, but there's been too many constraints for it to be practical. The main problems were that listeners would have to tune in at a specific time (like normal radio) and the server supplying the audio would have to provide multiple simultaneous uninterrupted streams (heavy strain and expensive bandwidth). However, Podcasting technology has solved these problems and it is now perfectly feasible to have a cheap and simple internet 'radio station' featuring Shetland music. Is anybody out there interested in collaborating on such a project?

He is nice, isn't he. The king of the mullet, or is that David 'The Hoff' Hasslehoff? Here's a couple of links for you ladies. Brace yourselves! Some lovely pictures of the Swayz meister. Feast your eyes Some North & South semi-historical melodramatic mediocrity Make sure your volume is turned up for a real Hoote-nanny Hoe-down!

I know what you mean about the habit part. I've altered my usual fag centered routine as much as possible, but I haven't been back to work or university yet. I don't know what's going to happen when everybody else is nipping to the back door for a fly one! And I think I'll wait till the smoking ban in pubs kicks in before I venture out boozing. As you say, one day at a time......
-
Good on you madcow. Happy smoke-free aniversa-ree How did you do it. Just knock it on the head? or use patches or something? Keep it up!!
-
I sympathise with you jim-jam. Gave up smoking myself after 14 years this newrdy. Not having too much trouble, but I've no been to the pub or spent any time with smokers yet. Good luck jim-jam

Is Celebrity Big Brother not the most insipid bruk which has ever been on TV. Where do they find some of these G-list 'personnalities'. I haven't even heard of most of them. People must watch it though, or it wouldn't be on TV. I suppose it is just a bit of fun, but I think its a bit of a sad reflection of our celebrity obssesed culture. What do you think? Am I over reacting?!!

I reckon the only real contender is old 'Ming' Campbell. He seems to be one of the only Lib Dems that other parties have any respect for. However, he is 64. Maybe not the answer for the Cons new 'youthful' leader. P.S. How come Menzies is pronounced Mingus

So much for big Roy Keane's debut. Celtic's lucky they didn't go down 5-1. Du Wei had a pretty poor debut too. He's lucky he wasn't sent off. C'mon the Clyde!

Anchovy with pineapple. They don't sound like very good bedfellows. But I'm no Jamie Oliver (i.e. my tongue fits into my mouth)

She is indeed a pretty lass! I was at the Anderson High with her. She lived in Unst and her father was the GP up there. However, I must agree with the concensus that her 'journal' is an irrelevant column, although I have only read it once or twice. Sorry Kim Maybe the day-to-day doings of a ferryman or a essykert driver would be a more compelling read What did Jim Tait have to say about her? I missed that

The energy debate - Nuclear vs renewable
peeriebryan replied to admin's topic in National & International News
Tidal energy is not intermittent. Hi muppet. I agree with what you're saying about tidal power, but I wasn't refering to that. There's a difference between wave and tidal power. Wave energy generation devices harness the oscillating motion of an incoming and outgoing waves to generate electricity. This is dependant on the energy present in the waves. You won't generate much on a flat calm day Here's a link to a brief summary of the main types of wave and tidal power I'm talking about Tidal & Wave Explined I think tidal power is a far more viable energy source than wave power due to the reasons you pointed out. -
If I remember correctly, Alan McLoud and Marvin Smith had a show on Radio Shetland called "XS All Areas" a few years back. They recorded local bands (a la John Peel) and had live sessions. They released a CD of the recordings called The XS Sessions, which is still available locally, or from the Bleatbeat website. I don't think they've been on the radio for a while, but they're still recording local music such as Ellie Mulhern, Bitumen River and Malachy Tallack (check the "downloads" section of this site. I'll submit links to some of their mp3s) I think SIBC are missing a real opportunity. They could make the station a focal point for the Shetland community, musically and otherwise. Maybe they could have a weekly programme featuring new Shetland music, or as 'jz' suggested, live sessions (although I'm not sure if their studio could accommodate that and currently there are no 'proper' studios in Shetland). They seem to have opted for the path of least resistance though. Radio Shetland could certainly take a more pro-active stance.........

I agree with you jz. He does have to take responsibility for himself, especially in such a responsible position. He has lied repeatedly until the other day, when he was forced to come clean. He is now a liability to his party and he really should step down. If he had resigned, he might not have had to drag himself, his party and his family into the current media feeding frenzy.

I think no also. Fish on pizzas, what's that all about? What are they called. Is it anchovies, or is that a vegetable? I don't know much about these things

Good stuff Distortio Do you, I mean whoever did it, have links to any more cut-ups? I agree that Sharon Osbourne should be on the airwaves a lot more. She's great. And her slim talented daughter. She's great too. Maybe Tara McPalmer Tompkinston. She's great too! (but I'm not sure what she actually does)

Radio programming; dear me, I must be getting old
peeriebryan replied to petergear's topic in TV, Film, Arts and Literature
There's something about New Year that does require a bit of 'whee-hooch'. Same as a wedding I suppose (have you ever been to a sooth wedding when they have a disco. Hit's joost no right!) I took in the bells at the legion with May & Mackie playing what I suppose could be described as, if I was to be cruel However, it was just the ticket, and at least it was live. I've heard a few reports that the usualy quite good Hogmanay TV was a load of guff. Oh god, I think you're right, we must be getting old -
I agree, there is something inherently unpleasant about SIBC, but I can't quite put my finger on it either. Maybe its the womans voice, which sounds like she can't quite be bothered. 'Sale, sale, sale....bargains, bargains, bargains' indeed. Maybe they should get a couple of guest presenters to relieve the tedium, and actually have some programmes instead of Which mp3 is that? Do you have a link for it? Is it your handy work perchance

I have just read an article on the BBC website which reports that the government are considering returning cannabis to a class B drug, 2 years after downgrading it to class C. This appears to fly in the face of research, much of it conducted by the Labour government itself, which had earlier recommended the decriminalisation of cannabis and approved public trials of its medicinal properties. Their apparent reasoning is that there is unproven potential for a minority of users to have an increaced risk of developing mental health problems. Does this mean that cannabis users may again be facing a maximum 14 year prison sentence rather than the slap on the wrist which has become commonplace in most areas of the UK. Remember that this follows last year's legislation which put magic mushrooms in the same class as heroin Here's a few links to some interesting articles on the subject - U.K. Leans Towards Stiffer Penalties for Cannabis Smokers - Police chief says cannabis proposals far too lenient - Blair plans U-turn on cannabis - Sting leads campaign against Blair's plan to reclassify cannabis - Cannabis medication 'turned my mum into a stranger' - Cannabis: The final word

The energy debate - Nuclear vs renewable
peeriebryan replied to admin's topic in National & International News
I think we should address the problem at the root i.e. our consumption. If we didn't use as much, we wouldn't need as much I heard on Newsnight recently that the average household has increased its electrical consumption by 11% since 1990, despite the government's (fairly lack-lustre) energy conservation campaigns Renewables, such as wind, wave and solar, which are intermittent by nature, will become a lot more viable when an efficient way to store charge is developed. We need some bigger batteries!! -
I've noticed that SIBC has 4 local artists on their playlist (according to the their website). Can't say as I've heard much local music on SIBC. Surely they should play more. The royalties generated from local radio play is one of the few revenue streams (besides live performances and CD sales) availabe to local musicians. I think Shetlanders would rather hear more home-grown music than the usual chart dross. Then again, I hardly ever listen to SIBC......Maybe that's why
