Phone Company Gives Something for Nothing Dear Ann, I think I can top the person who wrote complaining about the idiocy of the phone company. Talk about garbage in, garbage out! When AT&T split with Bell, we had three phones in our house. The equipment belonged to Ma Bell and the service belonged to AT&T. After we returned all the phone equipment to Ma Bell, we received a bill for $0.00. A few weeks later, we received a check for $5 and a note thanking us. Several months later, we received another computerized bill for $0.00. We called again, got nowhere, so we sent another check for $0.00. A few weeks later we received another $5 refund with the same thank you. This went on every three months for two years. Now we are down to once a year and have given up trying to straighten this out. We just cash the $5 and forget about it.

Exactly! I keep wondering why we keep re-electing councils that waste money but try to kick out council members that try to save money. The front page of last weeks Shetland times carried the news of the current state of councils finances. We cannot afford it! I would support Mareel if it didnt mean that public services would suffer in the long term (believe me, they will).

Im convinced that the posts by Nigel Jarman are a wind up. No-one can possibly have an ego that big. Unlinkedstudent, You are certainly the type of person that we want in Shetland. Easy going and willing to see how things go. Shetland as we know it has evolved from a few thousand years of different groups of people coming and going. All of these people left their mark on Shetland in some way, some more than others. For example, Lerwick would not be here at all if there wasnt a need for a fish trading post on the east coast of Shetland in the 16th century. People will continue to come and go for many years to come. We need these people to come and settle if Shetland is to survive otherwise the population will continue to fall. All we can hope for is the wisdom to accept the changes that will help Shetland and reject any changes to the detriment of Shetland.

I assume that you took it back. They need to know that they are selling dangerous goods. On the other hand, it could just be a one off fault in the kettle you bought.

For me the best is Ians chippy. I find the Fort overpriced with terrible service, although the food can be good. Happy Haddock is very hit or miss. Can be edible although usually inedible.

It would make no difference to Shetland. Where he sits in hollyrood would not change his ability to raise questions or fight for Shetlands interests. Does anyone really think he would be running for leadership for the benifit of Shetland? Think of it as applying for promotion. Do you apply because its better for the company/ customer base? No you apply because you want a new challenge. Of course the pay rise would also come into it. If Tavish does run for leadership then I wish him every success.

Not had problems with sky but im getting cold calls on my mobile. Everyday for the past two weeks I have had a call from the same number (01254 ******) asking for someone by name that ive never heard of. They ask for the same person each time and every time I tell them they have a wrong number. Then yesterday they phoned and went through the usual script then tried to sell me mobile phone insurance. told them if they get my name right I might listen to them! Half an hour later I got a call from the same person but a withheld number. Asked him to confirm my name but he said he couldnt "Due to the data protection act" Politley told him where to go! Is this a common problem with vodafone contracts?

WHAT NO BOOZE!! I thought I might get free champagne off them. Ive got a couple of suits Both a bit old but they should be ok for it. Its a good excuse for a trip to London though.

Ive been invited to a formal function where the dress code is "lounge suit or morning coat" I have no idea what these are or where to find them. Any ideas?

Actually, we are from Shetland not Shetlands. To answer your question though, very few Shetlanders think of themselves as Norwegian. Shetland does have very strong cultural links with Norway. In fact in terms of culture we are closer to Norway than Scotland. I could waffle on for hours on this topic, but im supposed to be working. So il leave it to someone else to explain this in more detail.
