  1. I would suggest you acquaint yourself better with the wider picture of what is going on in the fishing and don't get sucked in by celebrity campaign tactics, no matter how 'well intentioned'. The idea that cod is virtually extinct is utter nonsense for a start.
  2. ^^ Indeed.. absolutely nothin to stop that happening.
  3. The problem with all the music events in the cafe bar is they are free - so costing Mareel but not making the returns needed to justify staffing overheads
  4. Yea yea I know, but its amazing how the noise in support of a facility (i grant its needed) leads to kind of left field stuff like that one I'll draa me neck in again
  5. Community Council makes a financial contribution and that money comes from SIC. No problem if its all private but come on, get a grip, hardly an excuse for blocking a new school!!!
  6. Oh dear what a bloody shame. This is the sort of thing that needs to be considered anyway in the current austere climate
  7. Think about - not really able to answer that negatively
  8. If you are so convinced your MP doesn't represent the views of the 'people' why don't you just set this thread up with a poll and let the voting commence? You're living in the past and that would be further verified by a poll. Then I suppose you will just deride Shetlink users ars being unrepresentative of opinion. As i said earlier, AC has been very open in explaining why he voted the way he did and was under no coercion to do so - in other words he voted in line with his own principles and believes.
  9. I hear it was Shetlink that called for the ban so that they could increase the whole Classified car sales section of the site
  10. ^^^ Read Carmichael's piece in the Shetland Times on Friday - he makes it very clear he voted for the Bill as he believes in it, not because he is the whip. No difficulty with that.
  11. Are you going through the Air Discount Scheme page to go to Flybe? that might sort it
  12. Then he'll need a lot more than a fiver ....
  13. ^^ Serious amount of chips on shoulder does you no good - if you drew your neck in a bit you would find you had significant support in these islands but instead you choose to slag us islanders off so you are doing you and your colleagues no good. Take a rain check
  14. I may have got this wrong, but my understanding is that the overall reduction in staffing level amounts to 2 per vessel per shift. This is not a large number in the grand scheme of things, and has already been achieved by voluntary redunacy offers. I agree that the changes that may be coming on extra costs of a non cabin passage on the boats are at odds with lifeline service criteria. However, the answer to anyone either trying to 'sell' extra services or tell you not to sleep on the floor is to politely say 'no thanks, i'm fine where i am'
  15. I think you did get and answer, but in case i'm wrong, i believe ALL community halls in Shetland are 'owned' by either independent Trusts or community groups of some form or other. None of the halls are owned by the council. Many (if not all) halls will have had some support grants for capital expenditure to upgrade/build new facilities in the past 30 years or more. The key here is that none of the halls are the councils responsibility.
  16. ^^ and that's revenue budget only, the capital spending needs to be added to that
  17. ^^ 'Delivered in budget and on schedule'
  18. ^^ Nail on head Ghostrider. The infrastructure for power distribution is all set up in a system that emanates outwards from Lerwick. Cost of completely upgrading that is prohibitive. A gas pipeline is not a big thing, it would probably only need to be an 8" pipe or thereabouts so quite doable.
  19. Because Lerwick Up-Helly-Aa is not Shetland wide whereas Christmas is so argument invalid Also, are you sure it is not an extra holiday? I think you'll find SIC have a generous public holiday entitlement. Even if it is, nowadays it is more approriate to take flexible public holidays along with statutory holiday entitlement Far more sense to be like all other parts of Shetland and have it on a Friday wi a hop on Saturday, sleep on Sunday and back to work on a Monday Traditions can be changed in the modern world we now live in
  20. Couple of local bands sold the place out last week, so that's good. Much of what's on has 'minority' appeal, even if it is well promoted. How much are the Shetland Arts ads in the Shetland Times going to cost them for the year? its pretty full on in that department!

    Ferries

What's clear from the ferry review stuff is that there is a large amount of efficiency/operational savings to be made without ANY effect on the level of service. This is typical of the culture of management in SIC that has become the norm. Even before getting into the next tier of potential service reduction, a large saving can be achieved. Only then do we start to hear of radical options that would alter the service and need a lot of analysis of the effects. Interested in the comment above about crewing on Western Ferries on mainland. Is there some hard evidence/explanation of this? Is there something different in play regarding MCA rules in Shetland waters? The fact remains that the SIC pay better and have better conditions for staff than any comparable service in the land. That's the area that has rthe most cost, followed by relentlessly higher fuel
