  1. I'm simply expressing the view that a hulking great accommodation barge could surely have been better situated in a location where it did not detract from our rather fine looking harbour. Honestly, it's nothing to do with denying folk the "opportunity" to live close to the town. For the record, I live closer to the coop than I do the town centre.
  2. Got mine from great uncle Charles today. Pretty excited about collecting my fortune.
  3. I'm not particularly arsed about tescos, but personally I don't think we should be viewing the barge as the long-term saviour of commercial street.
  4. I agree - the location of the barge doesn't create a great first impression, which is a shame for the incomers. I've happily chatted away to some of these people when having a fag outside the pubs and, like any new person I meet I take them as they are, not on where their paymasters choose to house them.
  5. I think it's important not to confuse objection to the location of the barge, being the complete eyesore that it clearly is (in my opinion), with any hostility to incomers. For those of us who live in central Lerwick it really is a blot on the landscape. I've no doubt the publicans and shop owners are delighted. So as long as they're coining it in we should all be fine with it - is that the argument?
  6. Oh well, it wasn't on the front page and as I said I've been away for a while. Besides, my post contains a poll so maybe we'll get a real consensus from people that aren't on Shetlink as often as some of us.
  7. So, I've just returned to the isles after a month or so away and, frankly, I'm somewhat perturbed by the massive accommodation barge that has appeared in my absence! I'm told it will remain docked at the pier in the center of Lerwick for the next few years. No doubt this caused considerable controversy while I was away, but I haven't noticed any mention of it on this particular forum... Ironically it's parked opposite the Thule, which I recall had some hassle regarding it's luminous 'T' sign contravening council regulations which, presumably, were put in place to curtail any developments that were seen as being somehow not aesthetically pleasing. So, any thoughts? I assume there's nothing we can actually do about it, but I for one think it's a pretty crappy state of affairs when a company can just turn up and plonk an eyesore in front of one of the most picturesque harbors in Scotland and nobody seems to give a damn. No doubt some emotionally detached keyboard warriors will disagree. As a resident of Lerwick, however, I think it's a real shame.
  8. Worry not - there's plenty of front-line workers who are all too aware that their jobs are in peril. Mass redundancies are in the post and don't expect to find too many "managers" down the job centre. Oh what a fine, streamlined council it will be! The same cabal of back scratchers congratulating themselves on their innovative savings, as a hundreds sign-on and the schools, public toilets etc close. Don't worry that the old folk won't get their warm meals, or that the schools and offices aren't being properly cleaned. At least the emails (the new, cheaper form of paper-shuffling) between middle-management will continue with renewed vigor as they manifestly fail to address the real waste of resources in the council; themselves.
  9. All we need now are some more speed bumps, a few more one-way systems, some traffic lights, some speed cameras, some more traffic police and perhaps a splattering of mini-roundabouts and we'll all be happy little Eutopians.
  10. Saw this quote from Norman Tebbit (bastion of liberal, measured rhetoric that he is) on HIGNFY: "Maybe I'll be allowed to marry my own son," Lord Tebbit said. "Why shouldn't a mother marry her daughter? Why shouldn't two elderly sisters living together marry each other? I quite fancy my brother!" Playing Devil's advocate here, could the same arguments used by some in defense (rightly, in my opinion) of homosexuality not similarly be used by someone seeking to defend consensual incest? - IE it's repeated on occasion in the animal kingdom etc. Who are we to judge? I'd be interested to read your thoughts...
  11. I still think they should go ahead with my (admittedly controversial) idea of converting the rather tired looking Clickimin Broch into a drive-thru McDonalds...
  12. ^^ You trying to get a job with Arctic Security? Sounds like you'd be ideal
  13. Like Ironwithin, I too saw Skyfall (which was pretty good.. maybe a tad over-rated, but I digress...), where I had the misfortune to get stuck behind a hyperactive kid, whom by the end of the film I could have cheerfully strangled. His mum seemed oblivious throughout the entire film as he prattled loudly to himself "IS THAT JAMES BOND?! IS HE THE BADDIE? IS IT NEARLY FINISHED YET?!"... Pretty annoying, but what can you do? Nobody wants to be the "get off my lawn!" guy when kids are involved, and it's hardly the fault of the folks at Mareel. Like doon sooth, some people either don't know or don't care about cinema etiquette. I myself am perhaps overly paranoid about making too much noise to the point where I don't want to rustle my popcorn during a particularly quiet scene. Maybe I'm being too self conscious , but some punters just don't seem to consider other people whatsoever. Having said that, I think being allowed to bring beer in is a welcome change to the kill-joy, "thou shalt not" culture that has permeated throughout the whole country over the last few decades. Shame you can't smoke inside - It would totally add to the Film Noir ambience!
  14. Have just moved from Sky to the Post Office. Didn't expect much as I know it all sits on the same BT-owned infrastructure. However, after about a week of use I'd say the speed is way better. Odd, especially as Sky claim my account was in no way being 'throttled'...
  15. ^^ Are we to infer from your bizarre post that you somehow don't approve of Shetland's annual beardy, boozey fire-spree?
  16. ^^ If you re-read my post you'll see that I was actually complimenting the "smiley" door staff. It was the officious and rude demeanor of the security guard that I take issue with. Still, not everyone can be polite I guess, as you so succinctly illustrate with the tone of your response.
  17. I had a great night - the auditorium really is first class and, while the queue for the bar was insanely long, it was still a good craic and the bar staff where friendly and patient. My only gripe was with one of the security folks who was a bit over zealous to put it mildly. I was half way into the queue when me and a mate of mine decided to duck out for a fag, leaving our non-smoker partners to keep our place... not very gentlemanly of us now I think about it Anyway, the girl on the door of the smoking area was smiley and pleasant enough, but when we returned to our place in the queue the security guy made a bit of a scene claiming we were queue jumping. I was pretty sure he'd seen us leave the queue for our smoke and the guy behind me verified that I'd been there before... alas, jobsworth was having none of it. In the end we had to go and wait at the end of the bar while our girlfriends had to queue for a further 20 mins. I guess you could argue (as no doubt some will) that we were in the wrong, but the guy's whole demenour was totally unecessary. It's a cliche, but give a certain kind of person a uniform and they turn into real... well, you get the picture. Mix this guy's attitude with a boozey environment you can see how trouble can easily start and things can get out of hand. I saw a few people getting kicked out by the same guy later on that didn't seem drunk at all. I know it's a tough job sometimes, but come on.
  18. awesome - getting tix for dis! Why not host it at Mareel instead o da legion though?
  19. Fine and quiet in here... I guess everybody's at Mareel!
  20. Rather than blame absenteeism on a bizarrely high percentage of "skivers", perhaps a closer examination of a management culture that consistently promotes incompetent or flawed managers to "get them out of the way" might be more revealing? I suspect that certain managers may find that the stats regarding folk off on "work-related stress" seem to follow them around as they glide from department to department... As far as I'm aware there is no process in place that examines the effectiveness of management, based on the well-being (and subsequent productivity) of their staff. In my view, a manager that can somehow alienate an entire department to the extent that several people are medically signed off has failed profoundly in their job and, frankly, at being a decent human being. I know ,both anecdotally and through personal experience, of a handful so-called professionals within the council who have practically forced people away from work with their relentless, passive-aggressive bullying. Address this issue head on and I'll wager this largely arbitrary £3 million number will shrink dramatically.
  21. Found this rather handy alternative to the mareel website for checking screening times and booking tickets : http://mareel.facecloot.com/ Seems a bit simpler, to say the least...
  22. I'd have to agree with that, Spinner. Regardless of how people feel about the expenditure, the rather unappealing external design of the place (in my humble opinion) and the raft of other criticisms that have been levelled at the project ad nauseam on this thread, I personally am really looking forward to the opening. It'll be something new and different; a chance to see some of the latest films, a modern music venue, a new bar and eatery, a state of the art studio.... For people that actually go out and interact with others (or even people that just want to watch a film alone) this can surely only be a good thing, no?
  23. 1st time i read tthis...i thought it said "harpooned" "I love harp". Not quite got the same ring to it...
  24. Maybe a lot of the 'no' voters are reticent to participate in the debate because they fear they will be mocked, patronised, cajoled, lampooned and ultimately ostracised from the general debate by the usual pseudo-intellectual self-righteous cabal of bores that endlessly pontificate on this forum? Just a thought... I voted 'yes', by the way.
