  1. No one has asked me ,but ma'be I do not count.
  2. It should be noted that prescriptions in Scotland are free and have been for some time. However, it costs, as I understand it, £9.00 per item south of the border. I wonder who really pays the price? Free prescriptions in Scotland Prescription price in England But it is not "free" we are all paying in one way or another . Who is paying for the lack of public toilets or the graveyards that are no longer being cared for ,is that the price of free prescriptions
  3. Yes Ghostrider totally agree many establishments are " ripping us off" ,not directly in many cases but in a roundabout way especially when they know that it is the NHS or the council that is footing the bill. The Pharmaceutical industry is a good example providing medicines in quantities that most will never use, and we all know of the extortionate costs of some medicines..it is everyone who pays tax that ultimately has to foot the bill. We have paid national insurance all our working lives and this was supposed to provide our health care and pensions, and yes it probably would have done just that but for the fact that much of it is wasted on administration and other needless costs in many cases helping to keep someones fancy yacht afloat in some foreign port. If we lived in an honest nation where everyone was less greedy and those who can were not lining there own pockets at the expense of others then there might well be enough to pay everyone a decent pension at a sensible age. Folk are more dependent on others nowadays in the old days most folk would fend for themselves and did not want any handouts from the state.
  4. The problem is we all expect more and more from all our services and this all costs more and more . As tax payers the big question is how much tax should we pay and afford to pay this includes all tax VAT, tax on wages /pension ect. No matter what government is in power the need for more money to support all those extra demands is going to be a major problem and IMHO can only be fulfilled if we are prepared to pay more tax. But when a country over taxes especially buisness they will move elsewhere taking jobs with them, so I see this as a difficult situation for any politician who has to decide on this. That said the pension age should be set at say 65 and everyone should be encouraged to contribute to a personal pension guarenteed by some government body ,that would add a little extra to the national pension. Those who squander all there money and do not have a little bit set by will have to continue to work longer, but this in itself raises another problem as many folk on "0" hr contracts are lucky to survive from day to day far less contribute anything to a pension.and we cannot expect folk in there late sixties into there seventies to be able to do hard physical work. It's a vicious circle as on average we live longer and put greater and greater demands on the public purse.
  5. Yes the SNP might well win but with 10 candidates all getting some share of the votes it is unlikely that they will be able to claim a complete victory although we know they will .
  6. Well we all girn and greet about how much tax we pay but that is what funds all our services and freebies. Should we pay more tax to get what might appear more "freebies" some of us would go along with that ,many would not. It is a compromise on how much can be provided from the average tax payer to keep everyone in society happy. If public money was better spent and more accountable I believe we could all be getting a better deal. The way some of our public money has been squandered by "governments" is ridiculous, but thats something our elected MPs should be held to account for . Yes investing in schools ,hospitals, transport ect is good if properly supevised to ensure everything is built to the required standard ,up to government to ensure that .
  7. The reality is we are only some 21000 people in Shetland and our demands on the "governments" probably well exceed those of other areas and we are probably lucky to have what little we get. It costs more for everything on those islands ,eduction, transport, health services ect ect and that is probably more than they reap back in tax to pay for it. Many argue that we could be self sufficient, i somehow doubt that and will always maintain that we are better off as part of the UK . The SNP would like Scotland to break away from the Union and yet remain part of the EU this makes no sense to me but everyone to there own opinions IMHO our political representatives are not listening to the majority of there constituents anymore but trying to appease what appeals to them alone. There is nothing "free" someone somewhere has to pay for it.
  8. Goodness Me ! All yon money being wasted on a load of **ite when there are folk dying a hunger.
  9. Who is paying for all those SNP celebrities expenses like in travel ,accommadation and food and refreshments. If they paid it themselves, out of there own pockets , they would probably not be so keen on traveling so far north. And who is paying for all yon yellow placqes plastered all about the place.
  10. Strange how all those in authority have stood back and watched the "boffins" develop all this ingenious handsfree equipment and only starting to complain about it now. Will be difficult for car manufactures to remove / disable this equipment and who will bear the cost , but doubt if it will come to this as to many people in high places driving about in fancy cars that already have all those facilities and they will not want it altered or removed. I do accept that anything that distracts a driver is a problem but experience helps.
  11. Still no getting my vote,she's . Just a" pit on "
  12. The use of mobile phones is once again under observation,it appears that the use of handsfree devices are just as dangerous and might also be banned . Wonder how they will be able to "police " this with all modern vehicles now being supplied fitted with the latest hands free gagets available.voice control, bluetooth touch button ,and all that . I have no doubt that the use of the phone even handsfree is a distraction to driveing but in the modern vehicles there are many other "gizmos" that are just as distracting There was a discussion on this on BBC Radio yesterday but I was unable to listen to it all . Just another humbug for us drivers.
  13. You ask, "why was the EU referendum vote different"? The 'rules' of the EU referendum was that it was a pre-legislative advisory vote. The MSP By-Election is to select our representative at the Scottish Parliament. Elected representatives who debate EU membership, whether they are supportive or against, are obeying the 'simple rules of democracy' as per the legislation on which the referendum was based and parliamentary procedures. Falsely claiming that they are breaking 'rules' does not help clarity of discussion. In my opinion that is pure nonsense as I do not recall ever being told that this was an advisory vote. Where on the voteing paper did it say this . Guess the remoaners making up stories and stirring the **ite again.
  14. My selection of candidate is narrowed down considerably,as I will only vote for a party or someone who supports the national democratic vote of 2016. I went to the polling station in good faith and cast my vote like thousands of others in June 2016 and expected the result to be carried out according to the normal counting process eg the majority vote wins but as we all now know the Lib/Dems and the SNP and many others are in total defiance of the result. I bet there will be no "definance"when the votes are counted on the 29th of August ,who ever has the biggest score will win ,so why was the EU referendum vote different. How can I, or for that matter anyone else trust politicians who cannot obey the simple rules of democracy, We the people of the UK voted and it was up to them do the honorable thing but instead they have brought this country into caos and disrepute, how can anyone vote for any person or party who supports that.
  15. Weel I'll hae a cup of toy toy. (Well I will have a cup of tea to)
  16. Is there a course on "common sense" Plenty of folk are well educated and highly qualified but lack "midder wit"
  17. It's the freight charges that keep the ferry service viable.with government assistance. A passenger/car only ferry might pay at peak season times but would not pay its way most of the time and would also have to be heavily subsidised This is the way the ferries have always been and if we want bigger boats we will have to commute to somewhere else , Aberdeen harbour as it is cannot take a bigger boat. Possibly now that the oil boom is past and there is not the same money about ,many will not have the funds to travel so much and this will ease the congestion. For those of us who can remember, the North of Scotland Orkney and Shetland Shipping Co boats and the 2nd class accommodation,North Link is paradise in comparison.and has always been expensive. Unless the government decides to plough more money into the service , we are stuck with what we got. Cannot see anyone wanting to pay bigger fares to fund a better service.
  18. So it would appear 80 jobs are to be lost at Sullom Voe,but will those jobs really go or will they simply be contracted out to other organisations to save the company money in pension funds and other employee benefits !
  19. I would call it a show of strength from the Brexit Party. Well done I would say ,but I cannot say the same for the Liberals a bunch of hypocrites destroying British democracy. Hope we have a Brexit candidate in the upcoming by-election
  20. Women wanted to have equal pay and conditions with men,so it was not surprising that the pension age would change also. Someone please explain how this should have been done ! It all seems a very unfair to me, but I cannot see what other could have been done to "bridge the gap" between male and female pensions without causing some grief . I still think a squad of able bodied men would be more productive in many tasks ,than a similar squad of women, but only because of the difference in there masculinity
  21. In my book the majority wins, folk can manipulate it in anyway they want . It matters not which way anyone voted what really was important was to obey the results of the democratic vote and this of course as we all well know now is not the case. Excuses ,excuses ,excuses is all we continue to hear. Shame on all of them we should have been out by now and all the necessary deals ect in place . It must be a national crime not to respect the will of the people !
  22. What charges would you bring against them? We've established several times that the referendum was advisory, and that Brexit is parliament's decision. That's how our democracy works. I have empathy for those who feel let down by politicians, and Boris Johnson is but one of many responsible for promoting the half truths and myths that have got us into this pickle. With regards to the law, there are 3 key legal / constitutional rulings that I feel have been symptomatic of politicians disregard for our democratic processes throughout the Brexit process The Electoral Commission fining Leave.EU for various breaches of electoral law, with police enquiries ongoingMiller v Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union [2017] - when the High Court thwarted the government's attempt to bypass parliamentThe government being found in contempt for failing to publish the legal advice underpinning Brexit There was definitely nothing on my voting slip that indicated that it was "advisory" so that is pure nonsense. It is just our MPs making and breaking the rules of democracy to suit themselves. The majority of them should be kicked out for dereliction of duty.
  23. If we live in a country of free speech, surely people should be allowed to criticise Brexit? Or are you suggesting free speech should only apply to people who agree with you? I'm not stopping or against anyone, for criticising Brexit , why would i but fact is fact many have defied the result of the Brexit vote, and with free speech one has the choice to believe/or disbelieve what is being said . Better things of this nature ,spoken in the open for all to hear than behind closed doors .At least we then know what going on and can decide for ourselves what to believe. I do believe everything I read or hear ,would not think many do !
  24. So if Boris Johnson is summonsed to court to face accusation of misconduct, then surely all the politicians that have gone against the democratic 23rd June 2016 vote results should also be summonsed to appear before the courts. Surely the harm they have done to democracy "out weights" anything that Boris said, after all we are supposed to live in a country of free speech and be democratic are we not.
