  1. Could our school funds be caught up in this scam or even something simalar ??? http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01n2t2f/Panorama_Reading_Writing_and_RipOffs/
  2. We can all make accusations & pass horrible remarks about our council officials, but they are no different to anyone else, police, doctors ,nurse’s act ,& have a job to do which is so very often not pleasant. A surgeon may have to amputate a leg to save someone’s life, now would we suggest that he or she should be struck off. & never be allowed to use a scalpel again! In their private lives I believe there is not one councillor who wants to change or close anything, but in their official capacity, presented with all the facts & figures & advice, what options do they have left. The real problem really lies with the lack of government funding & past councils not implementing the necessary financial constraints when they should have ,but dipping into the reserve funds (which are now disappearing very fast), in an effort to solve the problem , no doubt hoping that better government funding would become available. But it never did. Would be interesting to know if all the many mandatory changes that have been imposed within the education system over the past few years , probably resulting in the increase of staff & transport has been funded from central government or from the reserve funds. This is mainly education at the moment but there will sadly be other departments which will almost certainly get similar treatment. Let’s support our councillors & try to encourage them to make these almost impossible decisions that in years to come hopefully will prove to have been correct under the circumstances at the time. The main thing now is to ensure that we get our fair share of funds from the various government departments to ensure a similar situation will not occur in the future. This will need some very good shrewd negotiators’ .
  3. This is all about "empire building" trying to be one up on BT This network will only be of benefit to a very few & at what cost . Watch what happens as the roads & verges deteriorate & this cable starts to give problems. This will happen ,how can a few strands of glass be supported in a pothole. Another waste of money & I would like to know how much this is costing the council . Iknow there is outside funding but this would have been better spent keeping rural schools open !
  4. Always thought that if you got a big fixed "salary" then you did not get overtime ,but worked whatever was required .The reason for being so well paid. Possibly this was a bonus !
  5. Probably loose "chips"in your modem .Same problem on some of the roads--
  6. Now whatever did Putin say to Cameron? Stildellin will find a way with his photographic skills, hush, hush.
  7. Ok hairyian, But when this £2000 pound line is down or running slow this should be activate a system of recompense to the users !
  8. I would also like to get what I pay for. When the system runs slow then we should be compensated accordingly. If I buy a clock & it runs slow .or buy a car & cannot get any acceleration I would surely get the problem solved or recompensed. Now I would not expect Tesco to go & open a supermarket in Fetlar, nor I do not expect BT to spend a lot of time & money in Shetland because if I was on the BT management board this would not look like a good business venture compared to many other highly populated more accessible areas . I’m sure we are a problem they wish would just go away . If I buy a car on monthly repayment ,surely I would get the same performance from that car as everyone else with the same model & similar payments. Why should broadband be any different ! Simple every time we go on line the system should do a speed test & charge accordingly
  9. Some interesting points of view, but I suspect that the “councils†throughout the UK will come in for major change in the next few years. We have already seen changes to the Police & Fire. Not all that many years ago the Post Office was like the council, with many different departments & grades of staff & look what has happened there, with the Telephone side being privatised, Post Office being subjected to major changes & what ever happened to the Post Office garage. I fear the same will happen to all the various council departments with centralization, leading to many good managerial & senior posts disappearing. The councils push for better “Broadband “ may well help in this centralization process as it requires good telecommunications to work successfully . Watch the offices empty as we get our services controlled from somewhere out with Shetland !
  10. Remember it's school holidays & no doubt with this weather many will be "surfing the net". Not enough mega bits for everyone . When Schools go back watch for the difference !
  11. Why is it that every time you visit the optician & get a new prescription you have to buy new frames? If a window in the house get broken it’s a new bit of glass not a new window. Like most people who wear spectacles, I now have several pairs with perfectly good frames but I always have to buy new frames, when all that is required is the new lens to be fitted into the old frame. Of course the new lens has to fit but if one attends the same optician this should not be a big problem. Possibly someone could open up a used frame shop & fit new lens at a reasonable price. There certainly cannot be a shortage of used frames ! Well possibly not, would anyone like to wear someone elses frames!--- But then again it’s not like false teeth.
  12. It's a real shame to dozens of garden plants dying in tesco for the want of a drink of water. Especially when we have no shortage of it. No wonder there profits are down
  13. Just a little MIS-STEAK, so what they do a fantastic job . Ma'be a tem brief with some do's & don'ts is all that is required !
  14. So peeriebryan, does this mean that Mareel will use BT Vision ,£3 ago for a film. Oh dear! why did I not think of this, could have turned the house into a cinema & lived in a hotel just for buying a few flat screen monitors & a few decent speakers
  15. It would be helpful if drivers would park responsibly at the rear of the Clickamin centre & not restrict the entrance to the Bus & Disabled drop of point. A grey Berlingo SV06GGA has been there most of the day & has been restricting access Not good Buses having to drop of kids in the middle of the car park !
  16. Will this new hotel be called "BRAREEL"
  17. Sorrry stilldellin according to a Shetland Visitor magazine it's not opening until 2112.
  18. Well, NewMagnie you may well be right possibly I am havering. I’m certainly no scientist but the fact is that as many parts of the world changed to cleaner fuels ,so has the weather. There is a definite correlation between the change in the weather I believe and the way we heat our homes and workplaces This has happened very quickly in the last 50years or so. Many old photographs show scenes of deep snow & frost . Lochs with several inches of ice ,voes frozen over ect. These are pictures that we cannot take to-day even if someone on the TV said we were getting more snow in the UK, I do not believe them ! Next time we get a decent fall of snow ,when it thaws go up in the hills away from any source of dust and tell me where the black scum that you will find on the snow comes from ? Snow can certainly form without dust ,but when there is dust present it then presents a “nucleus†& we get more snow forming.as it falls to ground. My theory is there is a link and until proved otherwise will haver on
  19. [infiltrator Had this been a private business that had lost £4.8 million though sheer mismanagement, someone would be joining the ever lengthening dole queue. They shoud be joining the ever lengthening prison queue ! Yon wid a bought a lok a denners fur da auld folk ,in mair besides
  20. The problem as I see it ,is the scientists are over looking the obvious. Yes of course we are burning more fossil fuel mainly oil ,gas & producing more CO2, but the point is this is “clean†compared to burning peat, coal & wood . Clean in as much as the whole of Europe is not encapsulated anymore in a blanket of smoke producing vast amount of soot & ash. It is this soot & ash which helps the formation of snow Heavy falls of snow then cool the ground & we get even more snow. Many of us can remember the smog .You put on a clean white shirt & an hour later it looked like you had been wearing it a week . That is the stuff that helps makes SNOW.
  21. The highway code says :-- 196 Signal-controlled crossings Pelican crossings. These are signal-controlled crossings where flashing amber follows the red ‘Stop’ light. You MUST stop when the red light shows. When the amber light is flashing, you MUST give way to any pedestrians on the crossing. If the amber light is flashing and there are no pedestrians on the crossing, you may proceed with caution. So who waits for green if crossing clear ?
  22. It's cut backs, trying to save some money here !!!!!
  23. Years ago we used to get more snow & deeper frosts. So what has changed this? Well if we go back say 50 years ago every house in Shetland & probably the whole of Europe would have been burning peat, coal, and logs whatever spewing smoke & dust into the atmosphere just what snow needs to form on. With all the vehicle emissions the atmosphere is no cleaner to-day but it is a different†texture “of dust & pollution & not the stuff that creates snow so readily. To-day few of us burn fossil fuel less smoke in the air & less snow !
