  1. Just one point to bear in mind . Thanks to Health & Safety , many of the tools in these vans will be personal issue like ladders, gas appliances, power tools & so each employee has to use there own . No compensation if you are injured while useing someone elses issue. That I believe to be the main need for so many vans !
  2. As far as I can understand the problem of empty croft houses is mainly the way the law stands . If someone acquires a croft with a dwelling house which he or she do not require for there own use it is better to let it go to ruin than let someone rent it because it is virtually impossible to evict someone, should you be unlucky to get an undesirable tenant. Also the right to buy after a given period of time applies & this also can be a problem
  3. Driving is no different to anything else, some are good at it others are not. The problem for most people is the lack of patience & consideration for other road users Leave plenty of room between your vehicle & the one ahead so there is time to adjust speed & take any action to avoid a collision . Remember it is better to be late than DEAD on time !
  4. Cameron is the prime minister for the UK So until Salmond wins his way ,Cameron calls the tune. Scotland is still part of the UK so like it or lump it David Cameron by whatever means is the man in overall charge !
  5. Oh hairyian, I'm not suggesting that Cameron sack anyone , but what if he set the date & called the referendum ,assuming that Alex will not call it sooner. Whats the point of having a leader if he cannot do anything . should we all just tell our bosses to go to "****" & just do what we want ! When the boss askes me to do something is he interfering ?
  6. David Cameron is the Prime Minister who was democratically elected , Now I did not put him there but I have to go along with the decision until he is ousted or the next voting day when the situation changes . This is how democracy works . Now as Cameron is the prime minister he is the master & can surely in that capacity can ask for any tune to be played , & steer what ever course he deems fit ,& could should he wish call for a national election on this independence issue. That would sort this stupid idea once & for all . When my boss asks me to do something I usually have to obey & do as requested , or look for a new job ! Alex Salmon seems to think he can do anything he wants . I see him as a big dictator who is all mouth & frightened to call an election as he knows he would more than likely lose With the state of the country there are far more important things to be discussion at the moment
  7. Hard hats have a sell by date & have to be replaced every few years to comply with health & safety regulations. Do motor cyclists & possibly pedal cyclist helmets also deteriorate with time ?
  8. Well well , MuckleJoannie you think this PLT is so brilliant ma’be a read of this might change your mind. http://www.elmac.co.uk/pdfs/whyPLTisbadforemc.pdf But who cares just another form of pollution !!!!
  9. Met Office has issued an AMBER warning for tomorrow, so better hope the ovens keep going. Could end up with a tin of ham
  10. Try :- Terry Strachan, Robertson Crescent, LERWICK
  11. Never ever seen a bus run , did'nt think they had legs ! Is this a new way to save fuel !
  12. MuckleJoannie Dunna be a coward & stand up for wir rights. That's the problem we give way & except all this changes in legaslation far to readily. Have you tried to caa the hill & catch 100% of all the sheep for tagging ,as an example .
  13. OSCR has no right to interfere with the Shetland Charitable Trust, This is money that belongs to Shetland & it was agreed when the Trust was established the way it would be managed. Few of us agree if any , with the way some of the funds have been spent ,but one thing for sure most of us are better of because of it. Sandy Cluness is a qualified solicitor & I’m sure understands the legalities better than most of us . It’s not often that I support Sandy ,but like†Kavi Ugl†I do. The only role that I could see OSCR play in this would be to ensure any money allocated to the many various organisations are spent correctly & do not end up some individuals pocket .
  14. Not been in Harry's for a while but with three vans to keep on the road do'nt suppose there is much left to give us any good deals considering the cost of motoring these days ! Must be the only one on the street who is doing well
  15. It still amazes me how many folk do not have pension provision, you could say that they are the blight of the private pension schemes. Shetlandpeat----- why would You be surprised as there are many people employed earning so little that there is no way they could fund any pension fund. They can hardly survive as it is far less agree to further deductions .
  16. One thing that would help the houseing situation, would be if those fortunate enough to get permanent or temporary accomadation would respect it & keep it clean & tidy. Many have animals which are allowed to climb ,sh**,& pi** all over carpets & furniture provided by the council which of course has to dumped & replaced when these mindless morons move somewhere else I've seen the mess some folk live in ,fine if its one own property but not if it belongs someone else . The council should have regular checks & if someone is messing up there property & living like a pig ,then give them a "sty" to live in. Mabe houseing should be graded & allocated to suit the type of client !!
  17. So wiz dat whit dey wir picking up we aw yun trucks at Brinderster da night.
  18. I would have welcomed a trust of 7 councillors (one from each ward) and 8 independent appointees. It would provide a great opportunity to get some expertise on board whether it be someone from the voluntary sector, business leaders or professionals. It would have been a great opportunity to enhance community planning in Shetland too. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- And Mutton ,why would these 8 appointees be any better than 8 elected councillors . Who would they be ! We actually have a very good team on the council .They are all very honest & dedicated I'm sure. The problem is there is so much to learn in the council , but by the time they get there up comes voteing day ,some will lose there seat . Experience can only be gained once on the council & this council has had a hard time with the financial constraints & some nasty political issues ,but this has all been "lessons learned" hopefully The problem with this council they think to big & should learn some lessons from the Edinburgh Tram fiasco .We could easily find ourselfs in the same position --held to ransome with a partly completed project with all money spent !
  19. EM--The way I see the charitable trust was an additional commitment privelidged to SIC members to administer for the benefit of the community of Shetland .The funding having been derived from the oil industry. The way this money has been spent is in many cases is questionable ,but the way the trust is run would to me appear to fully democratic . Every council in the UK would love to have such a charity & in my mind this is an additional function added to our councilors over and above there normal council duties & should not be linked in anyway to the normal duties of these councilors. In other words the charitable trust is separate from the council only with the exception that it is run by our elected members. This in my mind is about the only fair way to operate such a charity . It has to be remembered that not only has Shetland benefited from this fund, but what about all the companys & workers outside shetland who have also benifited.
  20. Yes I agree EM these changes are being forced on us by changes in the charitable legal system. But why is it that everytime someone says jump ,we ask how high instead of WHY. We should stand our ground & defy this order .
  21. There is no need for a referendum, we will all have the opertunity soon to select a new council at the polling stations. When I voted for my councilor I did so with the certain knowledge that he/she would be on the charitable trust .This is true democracy & does not need to be changed. If we take a look at our existing council,we will find it made up of many professions--Lawyers,police,social,farmers,crofters,buisnessmen/women,fishermen ect .To me this is a fairly good selection & I doubt if after the next election the elected persons will do the job any better or different. This is just another maneuver for some other body to get there greedy hands on what is Shetlands money. Let it be at least our elected councillors that decide how & where it is spent. The fact is that this fund should now be frozen & no money spent for possibly 5yrs to allow it to build up a bit (difficult in this financial times) & then we should only spend what it earns. If we d'ont do this in a very short time there will simply be no charitable trust as the money will all be gone There is an saying ---You cannot have your cake & eat it. Another saying that comes to mind is---The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence UNTIL YOU GET THERE. No change is needed with the way the charitable is set up ,just a bit more caution with the way the money is spent . One other quote that comes to mind --One mans loss is another mans gain . Must be a few fat bank accounts somewhere.
  22. I d'ont know what it costs to transport these big containers ,or how many these supermarkets are handling every week, but I'm sure as they are not running charitable organizations & that the costs will find it way on to most of the items we purchase. Like everything else the prices are increasing ,but some items are getting smaller but selling at the same price. Got to keep your wits about you if you d'ont want to be ripped off !
  23. I know someone who phoned the number advertised on the side of there van & was told that they did not have anyone working in Shetland. Bunch of cowboy imposters perhaps
