Urabug got a reaction from hakama in Scottish Independence Referendum 2021
Do not believe anything that our prospective politicians are promising, let us remember that this country and the whole world has to recover from the terrible results financially that Covid19 has brought on us all.
I will bet we will see more austerity throughout the country irrespective what party is in power, simply because we do not have the resources to fund it.
I see big cuts in our "services" looming ahead because we will not be able to raise enough funds to support them.
The government did well to support furlough, although it did not help everyone, but this money will no doubt have to be recouped and only You and I ,the taxpayers can do that.
Good luck to anyone who in five years time can say they got what they voted for.

The UK is over £2 Trillion pounds in debt,if Scotland were to go independent it would have to take with it a share of this debt .
Where is our wealth ,the oil industry is gradually being phased out in favour of reducing our demands on fossil fuel and this was an industry that provided a livelyhood for thousands of people.
Someone remarked that the "green" industry would support all those jobs but I cannot see that able to pay the wages that were available in the oil industry.,or anywhere near the number of jobs.
Also every litre of fuel oil that is sold has a very high rate of tax ,as the sale of fuel deminishes so will the revenue from that tax.
The SNP wants to kick Trident out, this will also be a kick in the teeth to many of those employed to maintain it, and how does the SNP intend to provide our military presence that is necessary to keep us all safe.
Fishing will IMHO become even more important to us as the years go by,but if the SNP rejoin the EU then all our fishing rights will once again go .Now we are out of the EU as time passes we will hopefully gain our waters back to ourselves or at least have more control who can fish them.
Scotland cannot survive on whisky and wind turbines, and the income from a few tourists, we need the support of our neighbours and they need us together it is best, who wants a border between us .
And what about the Scottish Pound, will we all be losers as the pound changes to the Euro.
Think the best we can do is bide together.

Yes, if I recall, you’ve brought that up a few times.
The point is they all have many faults, but most of us can see that, certain Folk on here seem determined that the SNP must get in, regardless of the future effects independence might have on people and the economy. Blinkers tightly secured and smash forward without knowing the consequences. Nothing matters except independence. I agree with Hakama, “these people are deluded” IMHO of course.

Yes, Well said Allen. All you lets leave people should read this. As I have said in previous posts you are delusional/kidding yourselves if you think that you are going to be better off on leaving the Union. At my age I am most unlikely to see separation but I do feel for the young people of this country even if it is most likely them that will vote it through not realizing the consequences.

Urabug reacted to hakama in Scottish Independence Referendum 2021
From the fact that no one seems to be able to tell me about Scotlands supposed wealth I must conclude that it does not have much and if that is the case leaving the Union would make Scotland a poorer place and why would Scotland jump out of the Union into a far more unknown situation with the EU. We will most certainly not get independence by joining the EU. It would be much better for Scotland to stay in the Union and get more autonomy from Westminster. Do all you lets leave the Union people really believe that the EU will be nice to us and that a hard border with Scotlands biggest trading partner will make Scotland more prosperous. As I said delusional.

Urabug got a reaction from Selkie in Proposed Co-op Stores in Scalloway & Sandwick ?
The truth is our country shops and wholesalers are struggling to compete with supermarket prices and I would bet that any "add ons " in the country shops are probably well justified with extra delivery charges. Why would any shop owner in the face of strong competition charge more than they have to and chase away there customers.
Just take an assistants wages ,say £300 they would probably have to take in about £1500 to cover that plus all the other overheads ,electic ,heating ,phones ,insurance etc, etc.
The small local shop is a god send but if it is to remain we will all have to be prepared to pay extra for our errands, because they have to pay extra to get them as well.

If anybody out there thinks that Scotland and its people will be better off out of the Union you are living in cloud cuckoo land and are delusional.

In the 60's and 70's "opposition" would have been "opportunity".
And rightly so.

Yes I certainly would, but would I be able to defend myself if I'm not allowed to speak my mind.
Maybe we are all to easily offended nowadays, and lack the ability to "shrug our shoulders " and walk away and forget.
I'm proud to be a "shelti" and have no objections being called one, but we have to be careful what we call some folk from other parts of the world as that can offend them.

Urabug reacted to Rasmie in Electric Vehicles
I don't think there will be any choice. It will be drive electric, or get the (electric) bus. The price of diesel and petrol will be forced up so that people can't
afford them. Most people will probably end up leasing as the cars are so expensive, and like a mobile phone will just be a monthly bill.

From all the posts it seems as if it is difficult to hide from the authorities and unless you are up to something why bother.

Urabug got a reaction from cicero in Vaccination cards.
IMHO I think we should get our passports stamped to say we have received the vaccine, this might mean travel company's would deny anyone without the "jag" but I certainly would feel more at ease knowing that those on board a bus/plane or boat had been inoculated even though it is not belt and braces.
I'm sure those measures would help the tourist industry, but I'm not going anywhere for a while yet.
Those who chose not to have this vaccination should also be prepared to "isolate "themselves so as to protect us all .
Every time we use our bank card ,go on the internet or use our mobile phones ,someone somewhere knows where we are so i have no problem with ID cards .

Urabug got a reaction from Roachmill in Driving in Shetland
So the Council is going to spend some money "upgrading" the Tesco roundabout.
As someone who regularly uses this particular roundabout not only driving, but occasionally on foot I fail to see any problems with it and cannot but be concerned about what difference any alterations will make.
Surely there are more needful places where this money would be better spent

EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zones) are for independent sovereign states not autonomous regions. For example the 'Falkland Islands EEZ' is the UK's EEZ, The 'Faroese EEZ' is Denmark's EEZ. If Scotland won independence they would have their own EEZ. It's up to the sovereign independent state to decide what they want to do with their EEZ.
The big fat lie that Wir Shetland tried to fool us with is this...
"Mr Tulloch sets out a case for autonomy based on Shetland’s “unique” position as an island group, that would see Shetland controlling the resources of its own 200-mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). This would include the vast bulk of fossil fuels and a majority of the most productive fishing grounds at present in the UK EEZ."
link here...https://www.shetlandtimes.co.uk/2015/12/28/wir-shetland-sends-explanation-to-islands-minister
I remember saying on here to supposed supporters of Shetland autonomy that we'd have more chance of a Faroese style of autonomy in an independent Scotland and was shot down in flames, then lo and behold a few months later I see Leslie Riddoch, a vociferous supporter of Scottish independence and admirer of the Scandanavian approach to government chairing a meeting in Shetland about Shetland autonomy.

Jo Swinson declined to respect that the Liberal party had a number of supporters who were in agreement of Brexit ,which she was very much against, and IMHO this cost her,her place in parliament and the Liberal leadership.
Nichola Sturgeon would be well advised to take into account that not everyone who votes SNP necessarily want independence and may as a result vote elsewhere to her and her party cost.

Urabug reacted to Windwalker in Scottish Independence Referendum 2021
Well said Muckle Oxters, it seems that the SNP supporters are always telling folk that we should vote for independence. But I wonder if most or any actually know how such a vote will effect us in years to come. There is so little information on the actual outcome of becoming independent. These are huge issues and I for one will not vote blind. I would rather stay with what I know, than take a gamble that things will be so rosy in Nikkinoo land.
it seems that those on here telling me to vote SNP to save the world ! And the constant hatred of anything Westminster really don’t have a clue of the outcome either or wouldn’t they be informing us of all the positives of ‘independence.
The William Wallace “Freedom “ attitude doesn’t answer the questions of how an independent Scotland will manage in the future, finance, borders with England, whether or not the EU were to allow Scotland back in etc.
The E.U, will strip Scotland of its assets and have it sitting at the door with the begging bowl, dancing to its tune. That’s not independence.
So let’s hear from the staunch SNP people on here as to what the advantages are and what they think the negatives are, how we will survive financially, maybe you’ll convince me.

Urabug got a reaction from Muckle Oxters in Have your say on Knab plans
No definitely not me ,but if my memory serves me correctly much of this was of "sectional"building made up of prefabricated sections all bolted together,so ma'be they could be dismantled carefully and reused .
This would give them a secondhand value and could provide some good outhouses,"waste not want not".
Guess it will be more economical to put in the "caterpillars",
If they put it on Shetlink for charity we could all go and take a bit. !!!

The SIC should keep it's nose out of things that are none of it's business.
The flag is just "grandstanding" by a bunch of "right on" politically correct numpties and has no place representing the people of Shetland (who may, (or may not) be opposed to the LGBT agenda.

History should not be forgotten. However you cannot take on guilt of past people's activities . Should the young people of Germany or Japan still feel ashamed? Or countless other nations and tribes. - Learn and move on!
Current racism is bad and people require to be educated from a young age, as it is learned behaviour.
Attacking historical figures just won't mean a thing to the racists.

Urabug got a reaction from Colin in black lives matter
Telling us what we can and cannot do in our own "free" country, dictating what we can watch on TV ect, destroying our heritage is this the way to address systemic racism.
No those who decide to stay in the UK should be prepared to adopt to our way of life or get out.
Sorry that many do not have my sense of harmless humor but banning some of our old comedy shows just because they "upset" a minority is not acceptable
All that this racist chant is doing is making things even worse for those it is supposed to help.
I'm not racist but when this nonsense starts to affect the way I live, then my attitude towards those that implement those changes certainly do.

We have to remember that if you are a policeman in America you are armed, and every likelihood the suspects that you are dealing with are more than likely the same.
One thing confronting an unarmed person ,to confronting someone armed.
I support stop and search in this country if it can reduce knife crime ect , although I could easily get caught on occasion myself after working in the shed, and forgetting to empty my pockets !
Crime is crime no matter who the perpetrators are and all should be brought to justice.
All this BLM demonstrations are a nonsense and just creating more divisions among us all.

Back on topic,
Pulling down statues and wrecking them is, imho, pretty dumb. Just vandalism.
You have to remember that most of the statues were erected because the subjects actually did something "good" for their communities.
As for the AHS being a "shrine" to slavery, get a grip, it's a school, and it's name is not important, it's what it does that matters.
Anyway,
I can't seem to find any links suggesting that Arthur Anderson was involved in the slave trade but, he did free a lot of people from bondage by bringing them education and shelter.
If you want to vilify his name, go ahead, I don't think that he cares to much anyway.
