  1. I used to spend my 6/- pocket money at Stove and Smiths and also remember buying some sort of rubbery plastic monsters at Goudie's which is now the Wine Shop I think. The toys were upstairs.
  2. Not in Ribble or Preston but I am in Stockport which isn't too far away.
  3. I recently saw one with the number plate V19GRA. Don't know if it was an advert.... (It wasn't in Shetland).
  4. I've watched a lot of the coverage via the cameras today as I live south (though I am a Shetlander born and bred) and I must say it's almost as good as being there. All I need is the smell of paraffin to complete the experience. (also the heat would be good too as I have no heating due to a broken boiler).
  5. Forgive me for becoming distracted from the main topic but please do not call me a Sheltie. I am a Shetlander.
  6. In among all the debacle between Jonathan Wills and Dave Clark Five Bellies it is heartening to read that Jonathan still has time to win the best tattie section at the Bressay Show. Only in Shetland......
  7. Hi Karen I was talking to a friend of mine yesterday (not a Shetlander) and I happened to mention Sleep Paralysis. Coincidentally her niece has just started experiencing this but had never heard of it or of anyone else who has had it. She is absolutely terrified and refusing to sleep (she's mid-teens I think). I've sent my friend the link to your article which I hope will help to convince her she's not going mad and that it's a fairly common experience. You mentioned before about meeting up with people in the summer. If you're still interested and the timing works out, I'll be home at the end of July. PM me if that fits with you and if you still want a chat. Cheers J
  8. I'm not sure you need to worry too much about people knowing him. They left Shetland when he was still at school (his older sister was in my class and I'm sure they left in the 1970's when I was in about 3rd or 4th year at AHS).
  9. Hi Lastpubrunner Thanks for that - I'll look into it. I am in South Manchester so it would probably only be an hour or so for me too. cheers J
  10. Hi Lastpubrunner My Shetland Times drops through my door every Saturday (depending on the weather in Shetland) and keeps me amused and caught up with events so I would personally recommend that. I live in the Manchester area which illustrates to me that the PO is pretty good at getting the Times over long distances efficiently. Not sure about an internet link though as my Dad generally goes into the office once a year and pays in person. I'm sure it can be done though and I'm assuming you'd find a Shetland Times website through google. xx
  11. Fantastic photos - thanks for them. As a long-time expat I've been digging about for photos all day. I took my daughter up last year (she was 11 at the time) and we've been re-living it all day. I was so pleased that everthing about Up Helly Aa was exactly the same as I remember from when I was little and to share that with my daughter was fantastic. I'm very proud to be a Shetlander and am constantly taking every opportunity to make sure my daughter knows what the heritage means. Up Helly Aa is certainly part of it! A Homesick Shetlander x
  12. I was at that gig - long time ago now! I was specifically there to see Pete Stack & the Rayburns - excellent!!
  13. Hi Karen Did you do any further research into this? You mentioned possibly setting up a website and I wondered if you got the chance? Cheers J
  14. ..of course it's in your head! Where else is it going to be? Everyone is a product of the interactions between the conscious and subconscious mind. This means any person who wishes to admit it has the ultimate control over any action and reaction they take. However the subconscious mind takes more work to change and that is where hypnotherapy works. If it were down to the conscious mind then sheer willpower would be all it takes. The number of smokers and drinkers who constantly say "I really should stop this" (and mean it but never do it) are the proof that willpower just doesn't usually hack it. If it does then good on you but the rest of us need a bit more.
  15. If it were down to willpower alone I'm sure you would have given up long ago. In my experience hypnotherapy is an amazing process - enjoy it!
  16. There's a lot to be said for an open minded approach. Hypnotherapy offers a non-chemical change of behaviour if you are willing to go along with it. The old cliche does always apply though - you have to want to do it and the only person who can change your behaviour (ie smoking) is you. A hypnotherapist can certainly assist but you have the ultimate control over what you do. There is always a choice.
  17. I was really interested to read about this as it's something I (and my mother) have had all my life. I saw a program on Narcolepsy a few years ago which had a tiny bit about sleep paralysis which is when I realised that's what I do. Mine takes the form of someone coming in the bedroom who I know is going to kill me. If I don't move and wake myself up I know I'm going to die (logically when I'm awake I know that's not true). It is one of the most terrifying things I have experienced and if I don't wake myself up properly I go straight back in it. When I first met my husband I told him that if he ever hears me making strange noises just after I've gone to sleep he's to wake me up as I'm screaming my head off. My mum used to tell us the same thing. I have tried to work out if there is any pattern to it - over tired, stressed, too hot, head stuck under the covers - but I can't. It just happens randomly. I did find it quite a relief that it's a recognised happening but had never really thought it was a sign of going crazy. I'm really interested in other people's experience too. Karen - if you want more I'm happy to tell you what I can about my own experiences. J
  18. My personal opinion is that words are not racist. It's the attitude behind the words that can cause a potential issue and that generally comes down to subjective opinion. Therefore if someone takes offence at something then it's offensive, if they don't, it's not. Regarding accent, I'm a born and bred Shetlander and very proud of my roots. However I have lived south for well over 20 years and my accent comes and goes depending where I am. I was taught from a young age that it is my responsibility to make myself understood to anyone I am talking to and if that requires me to change the way I speak then that's what I do.
  19. Lemon Meringue ones that are made at the canteen here at work. Wonderful!
  20. The Queen's public bar 20+ years ago also give me very fond memories (some hazier than others). Now there was a place that really had atmosphere.
  21. I'm in the North of England. Not as far as either NZ or Aus but far enough (take that how you will).
  22. We used to put candle wax on the old chute (the one with the cage on the top) so we could go faster. The ideal was to go flying off the end with out stopping. Head down on your stomach was the best method. Ah - the 70's wasn't a bad time to be a child (in some ways!).
