  1. Well, as promised, my router went off (red light) for a few minutes earlier this morning and when it came back on...: http://www.speedtest.net/result/2470486631.png Woo!
  2. The origin of the prayer seems to be quite obscure: http://www.aahistory.com/prayer.html
  3. Anne Cleeves first Shetland novel, "Raven Black", is available for the Kindle right now for £0.74. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Raven-Black-Shetland-Quartet-ebook/dp/B003GK21P8/ref=sr_1_1_bnp_1_kin?ie=UTF8&qid=1359252628&sr=8-1

  5. I've just had a letter from Talktalk advising me that my line will be upgraded at the end of Jan. And they're going to knock £15 off my monthly cost. Woo-hoo!
  6. Errr, because the bankers in the US and London crashed the economy? No we don't. We have long memories. We remember Thatchers Tory party asset stripping 150 years of UK industry and giving it to their friends, we remember the war declared on the unions and the millions of unemployed, we remember the fact that the most socialist period in UK history, 1945-1973, also saw the greatest rise in living standards, for all, in this countries history. A rise which stalled in 1979 and has remained stalled except for the top 1%. And we see the first thing done by our new tory masters is to cut the top rate of tax while slashing billions from every social safety net in existence and we see that the tories haven't changed, not in the slightest. Aha... Ruffled someones feathers... Noo you might be surprised to learn that I agree with a lot of what you say. I cant stand the Torries any more than Labour as someone above just said, they are all as bad as each other. But what ruffles my feathers is the view some people take, where all they do is condem one party and seem to have the blinkers on with their own. That was what my post was replying to and I was not looking for a "my parties better than yours" debate. wrong thread !! Quite all right. And I must say that to say Tony the Liars "New Labour" project was a massive disappointment would be the understatement of the century revealing a party corrupted by greed and led by a war criminal who was succeeded by an imbecile. Still, watching Portillo go down in '97 was sweet.
  7. A rabbi and a priest get into a car accident and it’s a bad one. Both cars are totally demolished, but amazingly, neither of the clerics is hurt. After they crawl out of their cars, the rabbi sees the priest’s collar and says, “So you’re a priest. I’m a rabbi. Just look at our cars. There’s nothing left, but we are unhurt. This must be a sign from God. God must have meant that we should meet and be friends and live together in peace the rest of our days.†The priest replies, “I agree with you completely. This must be a sign from God.†The rabbi continues, “…and look at this. Here’s another miracle. My car is completely demolished, broken glass everywhere, but this bottle of Mogen David wine didn’t break. Surely it is a sign. God wants us to drink this wine, give thanks, and celebrate our good fortune.†Then he hands the bottle to the priest. The priest agrees, takes a few big swigs, and offers the bottle back to the rabbi. The rabbi takes the bottle, immediately puts the cap on, and hands it back to the priest. The priest asks, “Aren’t you having any?†The rabbi replies, “No…I think I’ll wait for the police.â€

  9. Aah, I was wondering why there was a fire engine blocking off the exit from the roundabout last night.
  10. I agree about the Citalopram, kept me right for years. No side effects either unlike some of the other stuff I tried (Seroxat).
  11. I believe the Northlink boats have a deeper draught as the old P&O ones which also increases the time they can't enter the harbour.
  12. Bah! Still Crap: http://www.speedtest.net/result/2378675391.png Though better than I've had for a while, at this time of night.
  13. Let me get this straight, you think spending hundreds of thousands re-engineering the road is preferable to spending a few thousand putting up a couple of signs. Without finding out first whether the couple of signs would solve the problem. You have a very strange concept of "waste".
  14. Every now and again I come across something on the 'net that I think should be shared. I'm sure the same is true for everyone else, so that's what this thread is for. So please share what you've found here. The first is an account of an encounter with a serial killer: http://coyot.es/crossing/2005/03/23/life-and-death/ The comments are worth reading too. The second piece is an essay from Will Self on nostalgia: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-20726824

  16. Of course, you're entitled to your opinion. Personally, I can't see how anyone can object to the VE windfarm in terms of size (half the size of a similarly productive windfarm built elsewhere), ecological impact (negligible), proximity (within the guidelines) and health (no provable health impacts anywhere in the world), but thats just my opinion. Ha!, this is a hilarious one. "sustainable" Shetland campaigned so hard to get the windfarm stopped. They succeeded in getting the size reduced, and now they're surprised that others have moved in with plans for lots of small windfarms covering the isles to take up the spare capacity in the cable. What the hell else did they expect? There are a number of prominent local businessmen and women in the WSG, but the majority of members I met were supporters because they understood the dangers of climate change and the urgent need to mitigate these dangers. My support of the windfarm was never about the money. The money was just a nice bonus.
  17. Hi...don’t disagree with your point re-rulers...however, if it’s YES (God forbid) we’d we ruled by wee Alexi & co...and they certainly don’t give stuff about us! Bollox! If we got independence, then an election would be held and "wee Alexi & co" would have to take their chances along with everyone else. OTOH, if Shetland stayed with England, then we'd be faced with a permanent Tory government due to the Scottish labour MP's no longer being in Parliament. I'd rather have Salmond any day of the week.
  18. I got a takeaway from Flames on Sunday night. 3 Pizzas and a kebab, for 4 people. The food was lovely... but they got the order wrong, again. That's three times I've been and three times they've got it wrong. A 100% failure rate. They really need to sort this out.
  19. I switched on my computer at around 8pm this evening. It informed me there was an updated driver available for my graphics card, so I clicked the link to download it. It is now 11.30 pm. The download is at 21% and forecast to take another seven hours. The size of the download is: 210 Mb The thing is, come midnight, the download will go from 6.5 kb/sec to around 800kb/sec and it will be completed in a few minutes. I cannot believe the network is so congested between 6 pm and midnight, I mean what could possibly have changed up here in the last couple of months to see such a surge in demand? There must be more to it than simple congestion.
  20. Simple. The council back then came up with an agenda to make the cuts... and we voted them out at the next election. Then the stock market picked up again and the crisis went away. Looking at the figures posted earlier in the thread for the council budget, I notice the total cuts proposed come to 16% of the budget. Does this mean that all the managers are going to get a 16% pay cut? And that the number of managers is going to be cut by 16%? If not, why not?
  21. This is actually a damned good idea. I would go for it.
  22. If you have a tablet or smart phone then get the Google Sky Map app. You can hold your device up to the sky and it will give you a labelled star map of whatever you happen to be looking at. Cool.
  23. Perhaps the Council should invest in a couple of these: http://www.flankers-site.co.uk/moscow_2004_files/day03_43.jpg
  24. As I understand it, the attendance at the cinema has been far above what was forecast (2-3 x as much). Part of this will be the novelty effect, but not all, and it is a very good cinema. I've been three times so far and plan at least a couple of more visits before the year is out (plus once to a music event). I think the Council should loan the money to Mareel. That way the other money which is contingent on the council contributing can be accessed. As was said above, the leisure centres permanently operate at a loss and have done since they opened.
  25. Could you be more specific? Proof of what, exactly?
