Had a curry from the Sarmile on Friday night. Xacutti chicken with sag bhat. It was fantastic! One of the best curry's I've ever had, and they delivered it. I recommend the Sarmile unreservedly.

No1 is Scalloway road. The reason you can't identify it is because it is a mirror image. Try reversing it and you will recognise it. One of the houses in the background is the house I grew up in.

I was lucky enough to qualify for a shared ownership Hjatland house with my partner after years of renting privately when I was younger, it was a fantastic help and after seeing the recent rental market it makes me count my blessings, I would never have been able to afford to rent privately at todays prices.
I now own a different property which will border the Staney hill development and have already had a letter through the door asking if we have any objections.
Me and the wife had a chat about it and although the development will almost certainly have a detrimental effect on our house we decided it would be wrong to pull the ladder up behind us and put in any sort of objection and deny somebody else the opportunity we had.

Hjaltland seem to provide modern, well insulated properties that are cheaper to run than SIC properties, from my experience.

Waaaah! Waaah!  Fixing Climate Change is haaaard. So we should do nothing.

Just another piece of fossil fuel funded propoganda. It will be ignored, as it should.

And the point I've been trying to make, and obviously failing, is that Shetland is already covered with roads that cut up, down, along and through the peat willy-nilly, with no obvious ill-effects on the peat. These roads have been there for decades . and there has been no peat apocalypse. The landslides which have been happening with increasing frequency bear no relation to the roads anywhere near them. They have been caused by extreme rainfall which is a result of Climate Change. This is unstoppable. It will continue until there is no peat left on the sides of any of the hills in Shetland whether or not the windfarm gets built.

Which makes all this speculation about the windfarm causing landslides pointless. The landslides will continue anyway, windfarm or no.

a road can both cause and prevent a slip. you really need to prevent either drying or wetting of the natural peat water levels. a simple example badly planned drains will either dry or over soak a peat moss. preventing a pooling of water by not damming the flow of water in the peat. conversely causing a drying to happen will kill the moss and result in a dead eco system. the experts employed to plan and build tje roads will know this or i hope they do. https://corporate.vattenfall.co.uk/globalassets/uk/projects/south-kyle/ocms-1-road-and-wind-turbine-construction.pdffrom page 8 onwards.

its not the first time access roads have been built on deep sloping peat. as your aware peat around the half way house is in a poor condition. the restoration program would assist in preventing any more decay. and lets face it its not wind turbines thats caused the damage. i assume the crofter/farmers are not planning on paying to restore the moor. if it not returned to a better state expect more and more slides.

Good to see this topic has generated some interesting discussion. I particularly like Brian's list of other items to consider - Police being the first. Makes me wonder about Law - would we need to write our own laws?
As for the debate about who can and cannot vote on this issue, the answer is the electoral register - if you've voted in Shetland before you can vote on this. Might even spur some non-voters into registering...
And my initial concern about the NHS, Simple answer, as I see it, is; Work in Shetland and pay your tax to Shetland you get treatment, but choose to pay your tax to UK (or anywhere else) then expect to pay (or have travel insurance) for treatment. Much like most of the rest of the world.
And as for the finite resource of fossil fuels - WIND will blow more here than anywhere else in Britain, for an indefinite time.

PapaStour, can you please explain to me why you should have the right to force your bigoted, bronze-age morality on the rest of us? The solution is simple. If you don't like gay marriage, then don't marry someone of the same sex.

So you'll be advocating for forced marriage for all single mothers and single fathers then? A complete ban on divorce where there are children involved?

Come on now, let's hear all your plans for interfering in the lives of others and trampling all over their rights. We're all on tenterhooks here.

Then don't live the "Gay lifestyle".

And out comes the tinfoil hat brigade.

Population control. Well that might actually be a good idea, don't you think? Considering there are now 7 billion people living on a planet that can comfortably support 3 billion.

Militant anti-religion atheists. Militant, eh? Yeah it's all over the news every day. Atheist suicide bombers blowing up religious congregations, murdering anti-abortion campaigners, shooting schoolgirls in the head and throwing acid in their faces because they dare to attend church, burning priceless works of historical religious literature and blowing up thousand year old religious statues...

No, wait? Hang on a minute...

Perhaps it's time we did take a stricter line against the religious barbarians among us.

Imagine a world where the Catholic church preached family planning from the pulpit and ran health centres in it's churches providing contraception on demand and abortion when required, instead of grooming alter boys for rape and using women as slave labour.

Imagine a world where every mosque contained a school where girls were given even a basic education, and where rape victims weren't forced to marry their rapists on pain of being murdered by their own families to save their "honour".

Imagine a world where the fundamentalist christian churches didn't use every means at their disposal to force creationism into school science classrooms and use their money and influence to sponsor laws which would subject gay and lesbian people to the death penalty. Where they didn't picket clinics providing contraception, women's reproductive healthcare and abortion services. Where they didn't sponsor laws which would criminalise rape victims who get pregnant if they seek an abortion because that would be "destroying evidence".

    ...what's that?

Oh, yes, I suppose I am a "militant atheist", since you ask. I mean, just look at that "militant" rant I posted above.

What do you mean, "that's not what militant means", damn it, I worked hard for that title. I read all the atheist websites and I even post comments sometimes. How much more militant do you expect me to be...

    Oh,... that's what it means.

    No, I don't do that.

I guess I better shut up then.

To quote ArabiaTerra, "This idea that if we take action, it will make no difference for thousands of years is complete nonsense. In fact it is the complete opposite of the truth. If we do not take action within the next 30 years then nature will take matters into her own hands and nothing we do after that will make any difference."

Very true, and not only will nature take matters into her own hands but she will do nothing to look after us. The best thing, IMHO, is for us to take action now, otherwise we will keep saying, "In thirty years we'll..." and nothing at all will be done until it's too late.

By then we will probably have got a few peeps up to Mars and they'll be selling plots of land to build on, we'll all move there and immediately poison everything until it becomes uninhabitable.

Then we'll be looking for somewhere else to destroy - and on it goes.

Graphs are pretty but, don't really prove anything other than historic data and, cartoons are a neat way of poo pooing anything.

Pity that you had to use the graph of the Greenland Ice Core figures.  Did you try it with a Global Average?

What that illustration does not point out is that the current warming trend is mostly 'man made' whilst previous peaks and troughs appear to be a naturally(?) occurring cycle.

You also need to recognise that all the crap we are pumping into the atmosphere will stay there for a very long time and, not just a few hundred years.

Seems to me that our own heat retentive pollution coupled with natural warming/cooling cycles is going to screw things up pretty badly.

Perhaps you might be inclined to agree that warming is a fact when the water (if there is any left) starts splashing around your top lip....

The worst thing about this whole debate is the status quo. Something has to change. We are about to slip to third worst in the world for wage difference. Society has to become more equal I'm sick not just of bankers but companies as a whole paying huge bonuses equal to a average persons income over 10 years. It is actions like this that has got us in the state we are in. God we live in a country where you cant even adertise for an office junior anymore and the wonder how so many bairns are unemployed get real. I hate discrimination but common sense has to kick in somewhere. Next we wont be able to adevertise for apprentices as that will be discrimination as well.

Thanks for expanding your argument on true independence however my interest was not an attempt at a diversion but expanding the debate as in my opening post I highlighted the top 3 views regarding what the currency options could be and you appeared to have a different view that is a perfectly reasonable stance to advance.

Some parts of the media see the no formal currency agreement as a major issue. The purpose of the discussion is to open up the debate so that people here on Shetland see that this is not the only workable solution available and that it may not be the best as you are advancing.

The international media though seem to have taken an interest with the Wall Street Journal choosing to post the following comments on Thursday's announcement

    http://blogs.wsj.com/economics/2014/02/14/how-scotland-can-keep-the-pound/

and further academic comment by the Institute of Economic Affairs lays out options

The debate in earnest started back in August 2007 with the launch of the national conversation based around the White Paper "Choosing Scotland's Future" which was followed in 2009 with another White Paper for the proposed Referendum Bill. However between these two papers Wendy Alexander tried to get a referendum back in May 2008 with the "bring it on" offer.

I would like people to take part in an open democratic debate covering the issue freely and openly to get a fuller understanding of the options on offer and vote for the future they believe fits best.

Scottish MPs impact on the West Minister outcome is often over stated. It's a bit of an Urban Myth that without Scotland Labour could not win a majority. The last 3 Labour Governments in 1997, 2001 and 2005 would still of had a majority.

    http://www.newstatesman.com/blogs/the-staggers/2012/01/scotland-labour-majority-win

Since 1955 when Scotland last voted for what is now the Conservative Party the BBC's analysis show it only altered the out-turn on 3 occasions.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-25035427

The most recent of these was the 2010 election, as without the Scottish MPs the Conservative Party would have had an out right majority.

The vote in September decides whether Scotland remains in the UK or becomes a new independent state. If Scotland votes Yes then the first election to determine the Government is in May 2016. The vote in September is not about voting for or showing your support for the SNP, Liberal Democrats, Labour, Green, Conservative or a particular politician.
